Thanks for the information Mimi. As for the pouch thing, I tried it last night and he seemed okay. I obviously wouldn’t do any kind of activity while I had it with me. It just sat on my chest in a little cotton bag so it could hear my heartbeat and feel my breathing for about an hour or so. I don’t know if it was relaxed or scared stiff though.
The little guy tried to bite me though, I kind of think it’s full grown. Even though he is tiny. Like the size of a hamster.

I’m glad it seems to be working out OK! My guess is that he would be kind of scared right now…but it’ll be really neat once he gets to know you. 😀

Oh, be careful! The chance is probably low, but I’ve heard of wild animals carrying diseases. Hamster size is pretty tiny — I thought flying squirrels were usually just a little smaller than gray squirrels but maybe not…
Keep us posted!
January 31, 2007 at 10:36 pm #534461What a cutie!!! I hope everything works out for the little guy!!!
January 31, 2007 at 11:14 pm #534462Well, I’ve been wearing gloves while handling him so far so he hasn’t been able to bite me through the skin. He’s very jumpy, but once he is setteled he seems to be okay. I put him in the little pouch again and sat and watched TV for a while. I had the bag open so he wouldn’t be all stuffy and his eyes were wide the whole time. Then my cat Shady (who’s obsessed with cuddling when I am sitting down) kept trying to sleep on me. Finally I just let him have his way. He purrs lieka motor boat and I put the squirrel (while still in his pouch) on top of my kitty’s vibrating stomach and he almost fell asleep immediately. It was weird, but very cute.
He’s in a big fish tank right now, but I’m leaving now to get a tall cage. I guess they can’t be somewhere where they have no branches to jump to or walls to climb or else they can get sick.

February 1, 2007 at 1:41 am #534464I didn’t have them (my sugar gliders) for very long… I was just sort of their care takers for a little while. I didn’t pouch them everyday, though I did occasionally. I’ve heard that once they are grown, it’s a lot more difficult for them to bond with someone, or it at least takes a lot longer. I think you would really have to be dedicated about socializing with them every day and building trust!

That’s really cute! And there’s also a certain irony in a squirrel falling asleep on a cat’s stomach… 😆
I hope he gets more comfortable with the new surroundings soon.
February 1, 2007 at 12:34 pm #534467I had sugar glider once and I believe flying squirrels are a little bit bigger than gliders, like a gerbil, maybe? So you may have a baby.
As for the cage, be very careful. We lost a glider ’cause she caught her claw in the welding of the cage. Put branches in there; the less contact with the actual cage, the better I think.
This is bringing back very fond memories of the gliders… I want them back!

You may want to confirm what species you have though- if it’s a northern flying squirrel unfortunately it’s illegal to own in Mass. 🙁http://www.mass.gov/dfwele/dfw/dfwpets.htm

My art: featherdust.comFebruary 2, 2007 at 5:42 pm #534469Uh oh…by looking at the pictures it is definately a southern one. Well, I only planned on keeping it until winter was over and setting him free. He’s too mean to be kept as a pet. I got a huge cage and filled it with branches. He was flying all over the cage lastnight and having a ball. I bought him walnuts and berries and he seems to be getting alot more active. I wanted to tape him lastnight and put a video on youtube to post up so you guys could see him in action, but seeing they are illegal maybe I shouldn’t do that now.

February 2, 2007 at 7:17 pm #534471Wait – Nam said northern ones are illegal. You said it’s definitely a southern one. So… doesn’t that mean you can keep it?
February 2, 2007 at 7:43 pm #534472Actually, in the link that Nam posted, the southern flying squirrels were listed as being illegal…I didn’t see anything about northern ones being illegal, so maybe it was a typo in Nam’s post.
February 3, 2007 at 11:40 am #534473I think you’ve got it backwards, Mimi…
“Lawful (no MassWildlife permit required):
Only the following 11 mammals (or groups) may be kept as pets.
1. Four-toed (African Pygmy) Hedgehog;
2. Chinchilla, derived from captive stock;
3. Deer Mouse and White-footed Mouse;
4. Degu;
5. Egyptian Spiny Mouse;
6. House Mouse;
7. Jerboas;
8. Norway Rat;
9. Paca;
10. Southern Flying Squirrel;
11. Striped Hamster.”That’s from the link…so Southern flying squirrels (no. 10) are the legal ones. If you have a southern, Drag0n, you should be good to go…
Either way, I really wouldn’t recommend releasing it in the spring – exotic pets don’t do so well released in the suberbs! He won’t get the proper nutrition, he’ll probably end up as a snack for the local kitties, and even if he makes it to next winter, he’ll be in the same frozen boat as this year.
