I think your safest plan is to get the really valuable ones sent to Switzerland. You could have a couple small ones with you in the dorm, but (not to scare you, but) people have stuff stolen from them in their dorms all the time. DON’T keep anything too valuable there, except stuff you really need such as a laptop. Have your OW sent to Switz. And anything else that would cost a lot to replace or that you couldn’t replace at all.

That’s true. Since the OW has a spot reserved for him here, I think I’ll have him sent over before July sometime. But I don’t know about the gargoyles. They’re so heavy; they’ll cost a fortune to send. Of course, they’re less likely to get chipped, too.
The thing about my “dorm” is that it’ll actually be a two- or three-bedroom deal. Maybe that’ll decrease the threat of having my Windstones stolen?

Unless your roommates or your roommates’ friends steal them. That’s usually the case.

I agree with Emerald. Send everything home, except for one or two small to medium pieces that can easily be replaced. Like curls maybe or production griffin chicks.

I’m with star and emerald. I had one dragon at college with me (white male) because I bought him when I was in college. I also was lucky enough to have a single every year thanks to have medical stuff on record (w00t!), except freshman year because I didn’t know I could get one (but that was before I had any windstones). I did add another piece or two (I know I added a male kirin – surprise auction for only $20 because it was mismarked!- and a peacock coiled dragon because a friend got him for me for christmas one year), but that wasn’t until I lived off campus and had an apartment shared with one other person. We didn’t have parties and my room was pretty much safe from intrusion. Dorms are not safe places for valuables that can be seen or easily found and sometimes, it really just comes down to opportunity for someone to try something that they normally wouldn’t consider if the temptation is there. Most things I either acquired or I kept home. I didn’t really ever come home after I left for college freshman year, except for quick trips and all of christmas break (and only because I had to). I worked summers at the college and didn’t leave for breaks. College was home for me 8)

I wouldn’t bring any limited production pieces or anything really hard to replace (my pieces weren’t hard to find at the time :P). Lots of people at college really aren’t careful with other people’s things. It gets worse when they add certain libations to their systems!

Ohh, if you bring some pyos, you might get some people interested and some commissions πŸ˜€

        Thanks for your help, everybody.
PYOs will definitely be seen at college. But then again, those re pretty easy to replace. πŸ˜†
All right, I have less than three months… 😯 I didn’t even realize that I have so little time left here!
I’ll start having my pieces shipped over. Who knows – maybe the plan’ll change and I’ll be buying a two-way flight for July, but it won’t hurt to have my Windstones here anyway.
        Thank you all.

where are you going to university, gb?

        #562308

Bethany Lutheran in Mankato, MN. That’s if I go. (Always gotta add the disclaimer, just in case.) It’s a small college, about 500 students. And that’s already too many people for my taste. πŸ˜†

Why wouldn’t you go GB? πŸ˜•

        Oof, long story.
Okay, here goes. I have a job working at Opa’s here, right? He’s a general contractor who justed finished up a huge 520-apartment building site in ZΓΌrich. This site was a whopper to finish since he didn’t allow for a whole lot of time for mistakes – which of course always happen in building. It was very stressful, and Dad, who also works for Opa, got a lot of work loaded onto him. Now Dad’s personal business, managing a good chunk of Opa’s apartments, has grown too since he’s taking over several sites from another manager. Dad really should be working for his company, and not for Opa’s. But this year we have four building sites in the works – and two of them are 500 apartment deals.
I say it’s ridiculous to bite off that much, but when Opa’s mind is set… πŸ˜•
Anyway, if I go, Dad might have to do my work, too. I also have to option of working for his company, which I considered for a long time because the pay is so great, but I think I’d go crazy working in an office 7-5, five days a week.
That’s the other end of the spectrum. And of course the fact that my doggie’s here…

hmmmm….you do have a problem. But, college is important too. Can’t you take some classes at a local college around your work schedule? πŸ˜•

        #562312

There’s no lack of educational facilities around here. But I’m not going to any European uni. The socialistic aura and their political correctness (which I’m sure won’t be lacking at Bethany, either, but I can handle it better there) would get on my nerves real fast. I already had arguments with professors at AKAD over that kind of stuff. Besides, I’ve looked into the classes offers and nothing really appeals to me. It’s all too full or details and theory.

        #562313

Sounds like you have a dilemma then…leave the family business without help or put college off at least a semester. πŸ˜•

        #562314

Well, I found out today that Opa wouldn’t be too happy with my leaving for so long. That was too be expected of course. He does have the excellent point about making money in the States – nothing compared to what I’m used to here.
I just don’t know. Ever since I passed my tests in March I’ve been in limbo, thinking for a few weeks I’ll be staying Switzerland, then finding better arguments for two years of the U.S. experience…
For now I’m putting any further thought off until after next week. Dad’s taking me to a knife-making course – four days of know forum again! πŸ™ πŸ˜† – and I’ll see how adept I am at careful detail work. Knives aren’t guns, of course, but I think the principles are similar. If I find I’m any way suited for that kind of technical work, I may put serious effort into finding a gunsmithing apprenticeship here, which would also leave me in a position to continue helping with the family business.
I tell you what, it’ll be the Matterhorn off my mind when I get this figured out.

I bet!!! And as I said, you could put college in the US off a bit, just not too long. You need to go to college. You’re very smart and I’d hate to see you miss opportunities for higher learning. πŸ˜€
