Has anyone on this board ever done graphic design for a business? I’ll probably be asking an instructor of mine some questions, but I was just curious what you’ve charged for the rights to an image.

I’ve been approached by a small business owner in the Boston area who wants to use a horse head design of mine as her business logo and I think I’ve come up with a reasonable price based on my research, but what about legalese?

I know I probably need a contract of sorts turning the rights over to her for reproduction, have any of you done this on your own, or did you get a little legal help?

I’m excited by the prospect, but I’ve got a lot to iron out with her!

DigitalDragon does that for a living. Check out her website under her profile, and maybe you want to PM her. I don-t know how often she stops in.

Well, soon it’s going to be my living too! Only as a bachelor-degreed pro. I have an instructor that would tell me everything I needed to know, I just need to email him, but I’m momentarily lazy.

          I just thought I’d ask on a lark! 🙂

Bless his little pea-pickin’ heart, my instructor is gonna help.

Your opinions would still be cool, though.

😆 Glad you got uncomplicated help.

I have a few times, and charged based on my time and the rights purchased. If they are buying all rights, charge as much as you think you would have ever been able to make off of that image, because once they pay you, you’re no longer allowed to touch it! 😉

Actually, on further thought, I am a little confused as to what you meant by this comment, and wonder whether my business/living was taken seriously, or whether my offer of assistance was perhaps not welcome as I don’t possess a degree myself… I had assumed you simply meant that now your living (although already done previously as a student) would be done as a graduate instead.

I am indeed willing to share from my many years of self-education and work experience, however, if asked.

Nope, no offense meant! I don’t have any reason to not take you seriously. 🙂

I’m making a transition from piddling around to doing this full time with a degree so that’s what I meant, not a slam to your experience. I’m not that low. ;P I just have a bad case of foot-in-mouth disease that flares up from time to time.

That said, my instructor told me to quote $750 for the design, but to be prepared to haggle. So, DD, if you’re below that, I’ll bet you could up your prices a little bit.

That’s ok, I didn’t think it seemed likely you would make a comment to that effect (no offense meant on my part for even considering that either, I assure you!). I’m not always good at interpreting peoples’ meaning, so I like to ask sometimes foolish questions. 😉

I wish you much success with your making the transition. 🙂 It was hard enough going from full-time design job to freelance; school to freelance would be a real switch in gears. I can’t say as I miss University myself though. 😉

Yeah I charge pretty low for logos because I’m used to competing in places with others who charge so little. Not anymore though. Unless it’s a VERY small business or individual with almost no budget who wants some kind of ID for personal use, I have been raising my rates for logo work (I know contemporaries who charge about $600 CAD so your instructor’s suggested rate is more on par with what’s fair for a designer). I don’t get a lot of work for logos though, so I haven’t been too worried about it (I’m more a page layout person).

Yeah, my teacher is one of those people who’s been there, and done it, for years. he’s told us all kinds of stories in class (did you know that Jack Daniel’s was going to produce a wine at one point? He worked on the label), so I really trust his advice.

He’s a peach for helping me out, since I’m not in one of his classes this semester (but will have him again later, I’m sure).

I’ve done commissions and things, but this would be the first time I’ve actually done this kind of thing, so my first reaction was “Help!”

Oh wow, Jack Daniels eh?! That’s pretty cool. It’s great that you have such a good resource to fall back on. He’s probably pretty psyched to be asked for advice anyway. 😉

Yeah, he worked for a design firm in Houston, and he’s the best story teller.

I think he was a bit pleased to be asked too, personally. ;P

Well, congrats, Rusti! I’m studying to be a graphic designer myself, and know nothing about selling the rights.
That’s really awesome a company contacted you to use something of yours as a logo! To me, that’s one of the highest forms of ‘we like it’ because it will be plastered on everything they do! Letterheads, business cards, a storefront maybe…very cool.

In one of my classes we did talk extensively about logos, history of them through the creation process, and apparantly the girl who came up with the Nike swoosh was a student also and, was paid $25. 😯

I heard the opposite story, that the person who invented the swoosh was paid some huge disgusting amount of money, and when Nike saw that all they’d gotten for all that was something so simple, they almost didn’t pay him, but decided to go ahead and give it a try.
