Please feel free to make comments…this whole situation is hysterical and no one else would ever believe me πŸ™‚

    The Story:

I love Exotic animals…well all animals…but when I took in two Sugar Gliders, I never thought I would get such life lessons.

I had a male and female and they were breeding so I got all the males fixed. That is when the fun started. The older male wasn’t happy about having his nuts cut off and started to chew the area…

I almost lost him, but a lot of care and work and he survived.

Well, since then he has had a few episodes where he plays with his wanky sooo much that he gets it swollen and he can’t reel it back in….

Male Sugar Gliders like to play with their wankies and it is called Flossing…well he flossed so much last time that he had to wear and Elizabethan collar and get his wanky stitched in place for a week.

I came home tonight and he was at it again after at least a year of peace….

Of Course, I dug out the Elizabethan collar made of report cover plastic and mole skin and let me telling trying to put a collar that small on an animal that small is a job….and I had to do it myself….they have no real neck so you have to get it so tight you almost choke them….then you wait to make sure they don’t turn blue.

Then you have a period of thrashing and “crabbing” which sounds like an electric pencil sharpner. They throw themselves around and try to pull the collar off with their hands…

Then I stuck the neosporin on it and tried to push it back in with a human baby catheter…which he obviously didn’t appreciate….so he peed on me and tries to bite….

So now he is in a Sugar Glider sleeping pouch sitting in a towel next to me and if it isn’t better by morning, I will have to take off work, pray the exotic vet is around and go get him stitched up…

For a week after that, he must wear the collar and I must hand feed him and make him drink with a syringe…

Then I must endure the ribbing by my husband about the whole ridiculous fact that I have just spent an hour playing with my Sugar Glider’s wanky….

I just had to share with everyone the crazy lengths an animal lover will go to in order to care for a pet.

Edit: I forgot the part of my three cats trying to see what was going on, and Stoph opens doors…so I had to lock myself and Benji in the spare bathroom to get the ecollar on and play with the extruded wanky…. They obvoiusly wanted to play with Benji’s wanky too!

Here are pictures of Benji when he last had a wanky issue. Pics of ecollar:

OMG! He his sooooooo cute! I can’t help but find the whole situation funny though. Sooooo many comments that could be made 😈 I hope Benji feels better soon though (and finds a new hobby … boys πŸ™„ )

I meant for the post to be funny and I would probably laugh hysterically if you wanted to say funny things….

The funniest part of the whole thing, is who would believe this kind of stuff actually happens!!!

If men could reach their wanky’s they would never go to work….they would stay at home all day long….obviously that’s what Benji was doing with his day today!

        That was hilarious!

We had gliders for a while, but lost one of them. I still dream about them sometimes. One day, I’ll get some more. Now I’m better informed on some of their activies, too πŸ˜€

Oy! Poor little guy. Just goes to show, too much flossing is bad for you!

        (Sorry, couldn’t resist!)

I hope the swelling and irritation go down by morning, and that he doesn’t do this to himself again anytime soon.

        Males!

Why didn’t you just get the female fixed? Wouldn’t that have avoided all this problem with the male?
I never buy female animals, so I never have that kind of problem between the two πŸ˜›

The female and male were both rescues and in desperate need of a companion. The males have external testes and the females have internal sex organs.

Sugar Gliders are highly social and do not do well when kept as a solitary pet, unless their owner makes up for the need for a companion.

They also like to live in large social groups. So my female and male have three children, who are adults and all of them live together and take care of each other. Problem is..I didn’t want them to continue to reproduce….

They are so sweet together and love each other…and they are in a huge cage with lots of toys….

They are about the size of a hamster. Most exotic vets will not spay a female because it requires major surgery. The males can be anesthetized with gas and have the exteral testes removed in either a one stich proceedure or a no stitch proceedure.

With exotics..the goal is to do the least amount possible..because they are wild animals and always have issues.

Exotics are not like domesticated animals and they always have extreme issues. They are more likely to have these type issues …so the big moral of the story..

If you decide you want hedgehogs or fenec foxes or sugar gliders or kinkajous….you will be in for hefty vet bills for all sorts of crazy stuff…because that is what having non domesticated animals means…

They are not regular pets and they can be very rewarding, but pose challenges beyond what a Guinea Pig or a Hamster will cause…

Wow. Big answer… it could have been shorter. You can have just answered with the “Most exotic vets will not spay a female because it requires major surgery. The males can be anesthetized with gas and have the exteral testes removed in either a one stich proceedure or a no stitch proceedure” part lol.
I only asked about the female, not everything else or living conditions or anything 😯 I know a lot about sugar gliders because a friend had one. So I know all about them. But he had a male and that was it.
I’ve also had (or taken care of other’s) plenty of exotic animals, so I’m aware of what they entail πŸ˜‰

Sorry…I am always in education mode with exotics because so many people don’t understand….

I am geared for the long answer…..

Not anything to do with you personally….most people don’t even know what a Sugar Glider is…..

Oh I laughed!! stilly critter! I can see how putting that collar on could be a multi person job! Hope Benji gets better soon!

On a side note, it not just exotics that do things like that. Occasionally our dog will *ahem* be licking down there and then the hips start moving and there are funny grunting sounds 😯 we just ignore and look the other way 😳

Heheh. No worries. I just didn’t know why you didn’t just spay the female, so that’s why I asked πŸ™‚ And I got the answer in that long reply XD
