I like the mother and the crouching chick best too. Their poses are more interesting than the other two, who just sit there.
October 10, 2007 at 2:20 pm #594438Our theory is that the more ‘upright’ a sculpt is, the more people like it (subconsiously). i.e. the male griffin has always sold better than the momma (of all colors so far), the male dragon has always sold better than the momma, of all colors… the emperor sells well. The rising spectral sells better than the sitting even though it’s more expensive.
I’m speaking of Windstone’s overall sales trends over the last 25 years- not just recently or on here 🙂
I bet it’d be a good psych paper/research on why people do that. I know it’s true for me- I don’t generally like the laying down sculptures, with the exception of the Old Warrior.
-then again, I’m pretty sure the Old Warrior is exempt from any psycological preference, because he is just that darn awesome. 😉Volunteer mod- I'm here to help! Email me for the best response: nambroth at gmail.com
My art: featherdust.comOctober 10, 2007 at 3:53 pm #594439Well, there’s also the fact that you can place a more upright sculpt in more spots and it be nicely visible. I know I carefully place my mother dragons so that they can still be seen. I have more options with the male, he can be placed on higher shelves and still be seen relatively well where the mother would be hard to see and still appreciate fully. Just a thought. 😀
October 10, 2007 at 3:55 pm #594440That is an interesting theory (and most likely true).
I like the crouching chick better than the upright one, I think due mainly to the tail (I like the little hook). On the other hand I do like the male better than the female. I find that overall the female does not look good on most angles like the male does. Also, there seems to be less visuals for the eye. For example, the necklace and jewelry is lower and more hidden on the mother. The side of the mother is the “front” of the piece, where I have found that side/front view seems to be the best for the male. Due to the male’s pose you can see more detail (head, neck, and front claw areas, where these details are more subdued (and hidden) on the female when viewing from the side.
I also concur with most buyers that I like the male dragons over the female. I find them more engaging. On the flip side though, I do like the lap dragon more than others.
October 10, 2007 at 4:04 pm #594441My favorite dragon sculpts (other than the ever-popular ow) are the Lap, Scratcher, and fledgie…but I have to admit I have quite a few males, he’s rather dashing in several colors. 🙂 I favor the lap over even the ow. The only sculpt that can really compete for me is the scratcher, but the lap is awesome.

Well, that theory’s most definitely true for me. It is really hard to try to explain why too. I do put the OW in his own category though… he might be laying down, but he’s too unique and awesome not to love. Otherwise, I’d be fine without laying sculpts. All the various mamas are my least favorites, and I only like the Lap when paired with the OW (to fit my perception of what the piece should be, prior to Melody’s clarification). The only laying sculpts I like regardless of anything else are the baby unis & pegs, but I love that the baby Kirin sits up (my 1st Windstone!). The pieces I have duplicates of are all sitting poses (or OW or curls/coils… or Poads, which don’t count 😛 ).
I tend to favor male things anyway (pets, “male” stuffed animals, little boys, etc.), which is something in itself to interpret about my psyche.
October 10, 2007 at 7:10 pm #594443I am more swayed by color than position.
October 10, 2007 at 9:28 pm #594444I agree with lamorte. I’m more attacted by color, although a sculpture’s facial expression is important to me. 🙂
And I love all of the Griffins, Mom, Dad and both chicks!!! 😀

😯 Wha- wha- what?! C’mon! How irresistible is that cute little butt?! Admittedly, he arrived in the mail today and it was the first time Id seen a chick. The butt was just too precious- which sounds weird since were talking about an animal, er, mythical creature!
I love griffins. The only issue I may have, slightly, with the mama, is that she is husky. Yes, I know they are powerful, feathery creatures, but, if possible, Id like to see more femininity come through for the mama sculpt.
Ah! Pink female griffins, squeak! Nah, Im just kidding!

I have to say I agree, PhoenixTears. I never thought of that, but now that you mention it…
Not in pink, though!October 11, 2007 at 7:45 am #594447That’s really interesting! Huh…I definitely have all those preferences myself, but I would not attribute that to the positions the sculptures are in…I just think the male griffin, the male dragon and the emperor are all superior sculptures, better done than the mommas…just my opinion…I LOVE the lap dragon and old warrior dragon, both of whom are reclining, just because they’re so perfectly proportioned and so well done…interesting.

October 11, 2007 at 6:11 pm #594450Congrats DDVM.
October 11, 2007 at 6:11 pm #594451LOL well, not so good I think…well, I mean, good for DDVM, for sure! I think both of the others went for over $2000, and this one went for about $800.
Congrats, ddvm!!! You totally scored!
