Wow that really sucks. We were lucky that they didn’t garnish any of our wages when we were taken to court for medical bills. We had a judgement against us but they told us as long as we sent them so much a month we would be fine. I think your husband is just frustrated and you just happen to be the one there for him to take it out on.

I tried to set up a payment plan, the jerks at the collection agency flat out refused us. It was all or garnishment, that was how they wanted to play it…I wish I could afford a lawyer.

October 1, 2008 at 10:52 pm #734618I don’t think a lawyer would have helped. It just would have been another expense you didn’t need.
October 1, 2008 at 10:54 pm #734619Oh, Kyrin, I am so sorry. That totally sucks – both the garnishment and the fact that your husband yelled at you. I hope once he calms down he’ll come crawling on his stomach with chocolate in one hand and (wild)flowers in the other to apologize. I really hate being yelled out for something that’s not my fault so I totally sympathize with how you are feeling.
If there is anything I can do please let me know. *hugs*

October 2, 2008 at 2:48 am #734621I’m sorry to hear about your problems but would a credit councling place be able to help even though its only a couple of things? I have heard they can work out payment schedules with creditors and avoid this type of thing.

Nope, the situation here is medical bills, basically two of the local collection agencies hunted down all of our medical debts, bought them, then took us to small claims. Most of the credit counseling things are for credit cards, that kind of thing, also we aren’t in financial hardship from this according to their definitions, so we’re just stuck. Like I said, in 7 months it will be gone, and we can get our credit straightened out.
It’s just a bad idea to have children or get sick if you don’t have insurance in this stupid country…you pay for it whether you can afford to or not. Cause the bastards come after you with pitchforks!

October 2, 2008 at 9:41 am #734623I’m really sorry to hear about your situation. I know how you feel, my hubby does the same he’ll say ” I don’t care how but handle it.” You try to figure out with no help or suggestions, mine is $750.00 out of my pay every month for 5yrs. I been working in the medical field now for 15yrs, between hospitals and doctors offices doing the billing and collecting, but when I get calls and they say they can’t afford to pay it all, I would put them on a payment plan of what they could afford. Some patients would send $5.00 to $30.00 a month and they had to except it. I know alot of states don’t do that they want the whole amount ASAP which is not fair unless your wealthy and don’t have to worry. I hope things get better for you and keep your chin up because you did your best trying to resolve it on your own. My hubby did finally apologize and said he should of helped figure something out instead of just yelling about it. I only have 4 1/2 yrs to go, this last 6 mos. went quick, so I hope your 7 mos. goes quick for you and you can put it behind you.

A Lawyer might not have helped. Then you would also have been out the legal costs. I think they all work together.
Not trying to the subject to me here folks!!
I have the same issue with my HOA. It seemed like the least importtant bill so I did not pay it for a year and it ended up in collections and I had the same all or nothing thing you are getting.
I still have no idea how I got it to all work out. I had a little left in my 401K I was able to access by paying off a small loan I was able to get a larger loan for $4800, $4450 or so had to go to the collection company. Right when I thought I was DEAD in the water this happened.
I’m not going to scold, (like some here), or try and say you should be prepared. we all know we should but life does not always work out that way. I actually got an 8 hour Overtime day on this weeks check and it’s supposed to rain all weekend which could mean OT next week depening on how much rain we get.
I guess what I’m trying to say is hold your head up and keep looking at the end of the tunnel and the little light will get bigger as you get closer to it. If I win the lottery I will help too but since I don’t usually play it I’m sure that will not happen!!I was actually at the end of my rope a couple weeks ago when I posted and get slapped in the face about purchased I made IN CASH a LONG time before my current financial issues but everything works out for a reason.
We are all going thru something simmilar to this right now and it HAS to have a way to work itself out. My condo was going into foreclosure for non paid HOA dues so, can you believe that? I know EXACTLY what you are going to thru. I was surprised to learn that they can foreclose for non payment of HOA duesI’m sending as many good thoughts your way as possible
We are all here to listen and try and offer help when we can so feel free to vent here especially since this is YOUR post
October 2, 2008 at 5:08 pm #734625sorry for the problems Kyrin medical bills are a pain in the arse , as soon as one gets paid it seems like there are more in the mail …i think they make half the crap up on those things , probably get charged to sit and wait in the ER waiting room while inhaling other folks viruses and such . Dont be too surprised to see a federal gains tax on medicine after this election just say no to Obama
As far as comparing hospital bills to bills thought to be less important is like comparing apples and oranges . You cant help a medical bill, crap happens and no matter how much money you have your never prepared for the huge amount the hospital charges ( $5 for a 250mg Tylenol) . Mine go from 20 dollars to into the thousands , thanks to inept billing folks who always seem to single me out when skipping over billing my insurance . Its a conscious decision not to pay certain bills deemed unimportant even if money is tight you pay something of suffer the consequences of said decision. I understand that HOA associations suck emensly , ours wants a ton of money every 3 months while the board members sit there and pay nothing . We get no improvments , no snow removal but they spend money on self sealing envelopes , but we still have to pay the crooks till we can afford to move.
October 2, 2008 at 7:21 pm #734626Do you have itemized bills from the hospital? They tend to charge you for things that they did not do. So you need to have them produce an itemized bill. If there are erroneous charges you can have them removed. My mother discovered that a hospital charged her for two procedures she did not have when she gave birth to me. They also charged her $30 for 10 pills of advil. She bought a bottle, took it to the hospital, gave it to them and made them remove the charge. Hopefully you can find some and lower your outstanding debt. The collection agency will have to collect from the hospital if they made a mistake, because they are not entitled to money that was erroneously charged to your account.
*hugs* I hope it works out. We have the best medical care in the world but only people who don’t live here can afford it. Where’s the fairness in that, huh?

`With the possible exception of Kris’ hospital bill, I know mine are right, since I had actually talked all of them down from their original costs, original bill for having Karli was going to be around 11K, I worked with a company that specialized in helping folks with no insurance negotiate and got everything down to about $5800 and paid about $1200 of it before we bought the house, then the mortgage with the mortgage insurance became max priority, and it sucked us dry for over a year until we could refinance to get it reduced.
At this point, I am just grateful that we got the refi we needed done before all this happened…because if our credit had been as bad as it is now, we never would have succeeded, and we’d be in really bad shape now, versus being uncomfortable.
Actually we’re not bad off, we’ll make the bills and even have a little left over, basically this just really hurts our home repair budget, slowing down what we were planning on doing before winter. Now we will just have to concentrate on getting the gargage extension finished, and Karli’s wall and closet done, painting rooms and refinishing the upstairs floor may just have to wait a bit.
Once I get these projects done, I’ll need to start getting Xmas gifts, the kids already have a couple each, so we won’t need to add much more, but I have other people I wanted to give to…we’ll see.

Please consider this a friendly word of advice.
Remember you only take away what you put into a situation. You reap what you sew.
I think you would have found that everyone’s reaction to your financial distress might have been much different if nearly every post you’ve made in the past (6 months?) hadn’t been a complaint about what luxury items you cannot afford. I know as a reader it did grate on one considerably. There are luxury items many of us cannot afford and yet we are not all being overly vocal about it.
No one verbally slapped you that I saw as you so dramatically claimed; I saw others offer advice. If anyone is ever outright nasty or ugly to you please do let me know. Personal attacks will be dealt with by myself and higher powers if need be.Kyrin– I hear you and I am so sorry you are having trouble with this. This week my husband had to go to urgent care for strep throat, and we are uninsured (not for a lack of trying, but I am self employed and the cheapest insurance I can get for us costs more than I make in a month, per month!). So… I sit here with the proverbial tail between my legs, waiting for the bill and I know it’ll be outrageous. Health care here in the US is very harsh on those that cannot afford or are not offered insurance benefits through employers. 🙁
