I was caught up in Friday’s storms here in the Midwest and things around here are just now starting to return to normal. I do not have ‘net at home (though I do finally have power) and I’m posting using a paid time block at McD’s. I know I owe a PM to someone for the oriental box, but in case someone else was needing something from me (and I don’t think there was), know that it might be a couple more days before I can finally get things squared away.
It’s been a really tough week!

May 13, 2009 at 2:07 am #764724I have net back at home now, so I’ll finish the things I need to do.
In the meantime, I’ve unlocked the LJ post I made with storm damage photos in case anyone was curious.

The weather event is called a derecho. Here’s the archive of the event: http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/date/2009/05
I’m startled and a little upset that this has not made any kind of national news. The damage is insane and widespread. People have gone without power since Friday, homes and property has been destroyed, but only one person was killed, so I guess it wasn’t interesting enough for CNN or Yahoo. The weather event was truly unique, it was comparable to having a Category 2 hurricane blast through here (and the radar echo even looked like one! we were watching it on a friend’s phone while we were sitting it out in the mall’s storm shelter). It’s unlikely we’ll ever see anything like this happen here again.
Anyway, that’s how I spent my weekend.
Yay.
May 13, 2009 at 2:14 am #764725Wow, it did look just like a hurricane ( and I’ve seen my share) Glad your ok.
May 13, 2009 at 2:41 am #764726It passed within a few minutes, but the Doppler echo had a very distinct spiral, complete with an eye. It was the most amazing thing the closet meteorologist in me has ever seen.
I’m just glad that my animals were fine when I did manage to navigate the mess and get home. I was at work when it went through.
May 13, 2009 at 2:45 am #764727No kidding! The central eye just pops right up! 😮

this is not a screengrab of the actual doppler that I saw on my friend’s phone, but this is almost exactly what it looked like.
And, hah! A weather board discussing it. http://www.storm2k.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=105253&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=120

May 13, 2009 at 9:51 am #764730I’m glad your alright, hope you didn’t have any damage to your place. I can’t belive it wasn’t on the news, if it was I didn’t see it. You took some really good pictures of the damage it caused,
especially while your DRIVING. I would of been a nervous reck.May 13, 2009 at 1:35 pm #764731That video is so bizarre. That is exactly what it looked like outside my window when Gustav hit. Dealing with the damage and cleanup can be disheartening. Everyone up there is definitely in my thoughts.
May 13, 2009 at 2:41 pm #764732We got hit by something similar a few years back…
That’s me. I’m 6′ tall for reference.
My parent’s side yard.
— This was caused by high tension lines falling in someone’s yard and burning in the grass.
That’s only a small portion of the damage I was able to photo… D:
