Anybody know anything about this? My 5th grade daughter just got an invite registered mail to go to Washington D.C. this summer for this. 😮 It looks legitimate; the website cycl.org looks good… I’ve got a call in to my sister’s ex (remember his sister went to D.C. while she was in school, and is there now working in law- she was an International Baccalaureate high school student though). I mean… she’s a good kid (though sometimes not so mature, but only 11), a very good but not truly excellent student, involved in Student Council, patrols, tutors, etc etc, and it says she was nominated by her school. She does well on the state testing, but I’m lining up math tutoring for her. She didn’t get into the magnet middle school, although they claim the admittance is random.
Anybody have any experience with this? TDM? I’d hate to deny my daughter the kind of opportunity this looks like, but I want to be sure it’s real first. It would cost $2,000+ with airfare, i’m not sure about being able to line that up. I will be contacting her school/teacher Tuesday when i get off work.
Maybe I’ll be selling her old MLP collection early lol. Was saving it for college. And whatever Windstones I have here to lay my hands on.February 20, 2011 at 12:53 am #838738pips, I’d double check with the school and her teachers. I do know that in some of the larger school districts here, they’ve participated in model U N and other programs. If it’s upfront and legitimate (it does look like it) and if you could afford it, I’d try to participate for several reasons… it’s a fabulous way to see how our government runs; it’ll look good going into high school and gives her a head start on extra curricular activities; and what a way to see the Capitol! The Library of Congress, The Smithsonian, The White House, The Lincoln Memorial, The Washington Monument, etc. etc. See also if you might be able to travel with the students as a chaperone. I was lucky enough to see D.C. with my family when I was 15 (my youngest brother, Ed, was 3) It was great having our folks along, especially because both mom and dad love history and could really make it come to life. We lived in Cali at the time and our folks took 5 of the 6 of us out of school for three weeks and we flew into D.C. We crammed in as much as we could – we hit the East Coast with a Bang! Colonial Williamsburg in Virgina; Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s home; Mt. Vernon, George Washingtons’ home; Plymouth Plantation and Plymouth Rock and the Mayflower; The Old North Church; Boston Commons; Yale… We all kept a journal of the trip and it’s fun to go back and read them, look at the pictures – even Ed remembers that trip; riding the subway in NYC; standing on top of the World Trade Center Towers; The Statue of Liberty; The U.N.; The Liberty Bell in Philadephia and being able to tour the buildings where the founding documents of our nation were written and debated… I’d jump on that chance if I were you! Let us know what you decide!

February 20, 2011 at 4:27 pm #838739I did NYLC in high school, and I still have fond memories of it. It was my first airplane trip, my first trip to DC, etc. It was fantastic! I didn’t pay for any of it (I was a poor kid), all the ladies in the various social organizations donated money, teachers donated money, etc. I will never forget it.
February 20, 2011 at 4:29 pm #838740By the way, at the time I went (I don’t think there was a Jr. NYLC), kids had to be nominated by a teacher. My nominator was my math teacher.
