Pass on by if you don’t want to hear a brief whine (There might be some cheese in the fridge to go with it, if you’re hungry.)
Is anybody else job hunting in this market? I’ve been looking since August last year when I graduated and I’ve had a grand total of four interviews. The most recent was with the local paper this past Monday. I’m desperately clinging to some optimism with that one, since it’s only been a week and the guy seemed genuinely interested, and I had a reference he had known and worked with as an ‘in’. I haven’t given up hope on it yet, but I’m afraid to get too optimistic, as I’ve been disappointed over and over these past few months.
Obviously, I am having a miserable time finding a job. Anywhere. The two or three of you from the forum who also watch my LJ know this already.
I’m working 30+ hours a week at my retail job, which is OK money, but not enough to keep me from having to move back in with my parents at the end of next month, if nothing pans out.
I always feel like I’m in the middle of something and I’m unable to really set up to take contracted freelance clients right now, it’s either work at the department store or something here at home I have to take care of (which will be moving, here shortly). I’m desperate to ‘get on with my life’ so to speak. I realize I’m living it every day, but I feel stuck in limbo. My 14 year old truck is not going to last forever, I have loans and CC debt to pay off, and just…bleh.
I’m looking for work in the midwest (St Louis, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Memphis, etc.) but I’m starting to range a little wider in what I apply for. I just sent a resume to a company in Alabama. If you guys hear of any decent paying job openings and you live in the midwest or close by, let me know, will you?
/vent out, you will probably never hear anything like this from me again…unless you watch my LJ.
April 27, 2009 at 3:16 am #762274These are rough times to be job-hunting. After I graduated it took me eight months to find work, but I did find it. I went through some serious periods of depression after sending my resume sailing into the Internet void and not hearing anything back; I know how you feel. Don’t lose hope and optimism. I think you’ll find work.

I wouldn’t call my periods of depression serious. But I won’t say that I don’t have them. I’m not in danger of living in public housing or anything, but my options aren’t exactly the ones I prefer.

Sun Dragon Koi #3April 27, 2009 at 8:13 pm #762277I’ve been job searching since January. I have had interviews with 4 places, 3 of them fairly promising. But all are nervous about hiring someone. And those that are openly hiring are asking for more experience than they probably need. But they can get it because some very experienced and skilled people are out there looking for jobs. I think I might be in a decent position to get a job, but right now, things really do suck. And depression…yeah, I know what that’s all about.
Oh…and I stopped being picky about where when I realized that there were next to no jobs in my field here. Maybe 3 weeks into the search.April 27, 2009 at 8:55 pm #762278setsunawolf wrote:What kind of work are you looking for?
My bad! I’m a graphic designer/web designer.
I’m not super picky other than the fact that I don’t want to move too far away (I tried to move to NC once…that didn’t work so well) from family and I’d rather not go to Chicago, but even Chicago is on my location list now, and I’m ranging a little further afield with the stuff I apply for.
It’s a rough world at the moment, no doubt about it. And reading some design communities, I also know I’m certainly not the only one sending resumes into the abyss. ;P
April 28, 2009 at 1:56 am #762279My depression wasn’t serious, it only lasted a few hours, and it only kicked in during month seven. I got to the point where I was job-hunting every day for about 15 minutes.
When I was job-hunting a professional artist I looked to for help told me not to give up. He said to be persistent and he knew how I felt. He said stay focused and I will get exactly where I want to go.
April 28, 2009 at 2:35 pm #762280I’m a graphic designer/web designer too and I hear ya! I’ve been working freelance right now but before that I worked a 6 month gig with no benefits because that was the only job I could get that got me out of retail, now I’m looking again! Last time it took me a year to find something :/
April 29, 2009 at 1:19 am #762281Best of luck to you! I have been looking for a job ever since I got my Masters a year ago. Fortunately I’ve been able to keep working part time through my school, but that’s only if I remain a student! So I am making some money, but most of that is going right back into tuition. Not a good situation! Eventually my money will run out, and I’m hoping I’ll hunt out options before that happens.
But don’t give up! There has to be some way you can promote yourself and your unique work. Have you tried posting on Craigslist, or a DeviantArt gallery? Showing off some of your work might catch the eye of someone who needs your services.
Best of luck to you!
Forever seeking: Blackwatch the raffle Old Warrior, Jennifer Miller's pieces, and GB Baby unis!

If you have a Masters you might check out teaching at a Community college or adjunct teaching at a local college. The pay isn’t as good as a full time gig but it might help pay the bills. You can teach the 100 level and remedial stuff w/ a Master’s. Their full time staff usually doesn’t have time nor desire to teach the basics. 🙂Looking for Blue Fawn Baby Kirin
