in the show, they were talking about things Melody would like to do if she had the opportunity, and she was talking about how there was a place that could scale down the sculpt and then maybe she would cast them in pewter for making jewelry, and she had read this comment and explained how hard it would be to make them in silver, and then she said it was all something that she’d like to do, but probably wouldn’t get the time to…
that’s basically the really short version of the conversation on jewelry..
hope that helps..
I came home and listened to the show after work.. it was pretty cool…
October 9, 2008 at 5:06 pm #735465Thanks, frozen. I would like silver Windstone jewelry too. I understand time constraints and the difficulty of it though.
I’m also allergic to almost every metal, except silver. 😀
October 9, 2008 at 5:56 pm #735466pewter does funny things to my skin, so I’d also need silver. Ah well, I’m use to it. Although if they were going to size it down how difficult would it be to make the mold for silver instead of pewter? I don’t honestly know so I’m asking.
Looking for Blue Fawn Baby Kirin

I don’t think it’s a question of the mold.. I think it’s a process of the melting of sivler and pouring it..
it’s a bit different than the pewter, and there’s a chemical to clean the silver and polishing.. Melody would need a whole new area and new people to actually do that part of it..
but I do agree with everyone.. it would have to be silver for me too..
silver and stainless steel are the only metals that don’t make my skin do weird things…
October 9, 2008 at 10:34 pm #735468Yup, either my neck turns green (along with the necklace) or I get hives. Not fun.

Silver, gold and bronze are usually cast using the “lost wax” method with an “investment mold”. The wax master and mold are destroyed for each piece that is made that way. It is not horribly difficult to do, but is more work than casting pewter. Pewter is usually cast by pouring the molten pewter into re-usable spinning rubber molds. I don’t know why silver and other metals can’t be cast that way… does anybody know? I’m guessing it is because the pouring temperatures of other metals are too high for a rubber mold to take without burning up, or deforming.

yup.. you got it right.. silver needs to melted at a higher temperature than the pewter… my dad does pewter figures in his spare time.. and he’s got this tiny little pot and burner to melt it with and it melts at a low temperature and cools pretty quit..
we did silver rings in high school.. that was hotter and took longer to cool..
but really fun to do…
