I’ve been wanting to purchase a really nice pirate captains coat for a long time now. I’ve narrowed it down a little but I’m not sure which one will look the best on me.
I really like the coats on this site:

I’m thinking of the dark teal one (v20)
Or this one here:

Here’s a pic of me now so you can picture which I might look better in.

Engaged to a WeaselMarch 9, 2008 at 7:56 am #676169I’m not sure which one you’d look best in…they’re so different in style I think you should go with the one that appeals most to you. For me, I like the old style. 🙂
March 9, 2008 at 9:21 am #676170Normally I am all for whichever is more expensive, but not in this case. I like the v20 better. Much better.
March 9, 2008 at 9:32 am #676171What would you use it for and where would you wear it? I know being practical has its drawbacks, but I bought this really beautiful mauve and violet and blue velvet jacket with gold trim with a blouse to go with it and a velvet hat and I haven’t worn it once. Not even to the events where I thought it would be appropriate because they turned out not to be, the events were much more casual. So if you are going to spend the money on this jacket, be sure you can wear it some place you will be comfortable in it. 😀
March 9, 2008 at 10:28 am #676172I like the V5 myself because I like the color better but I’d never be able to force my bf into one of those 🙄 . Of the two you have your choices narrowed down to, I prefer the V20.
March 9, 2008 at 2:10 pm #676173The serpentine one is absolutely beautiful. I’m thinking that one might be more easily wearable at functions and stuff than the teal one. That one’s nice too, but it looks “costumy” compared to the serpentine.
Great, now I want one for myself! 😀
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

http://www.sarahjestin.com/feedbacklists.htmMarch 9, 2008 at 3:05 pm #676174I’m guessing BPB wants the coat for Ren Fairs and similar occasions. I’d go with V20. The serpentine one is nice, but not something I’d expect to see on a pirate captain. 🙂
March 9, 2008 at 4:51 pm #676175The V20 has a more Pirate look to it. I like it better, has more color to it than the other.
March 9, 2008 at 7:23 pm #676176I like v20 for the pirate look. The serpentine one is beautiful, but I agree with star…not very pirate-like.
March 9, 2008 at 7:38 pm #676177I like EJ4av15b but it’s probably because I am partial to the color shown
March 9, 2008 at 8:55 pm #676178As a costumer the first pirate coat is much more authentic to time period, cut and style. The second, the frock coat, is lovely also, but is not as historically accurate. It’s not long enough for one thing and the construction on the first coat looks better. Really it matters what you want to use it for. If it’s for RenFaire use the Pirate Coat. If it’s just to have an outerwear coat to replae a tux or some such thing go with the second coat. See if you can get testimonials from actual customers and see what they have to say and what is the companines return policy if it’s not what you want when it arrives. Both coats are lovely (not a good term to use for a young man I guess) but it really depends on what you want to use it for and what kind of wear is it going to be subjected to. If you are trying to duplicate something from a film, remember that there often 10-15 identical costumes for hero characters because of all the wear and tear they go through! Even for stage in our non-exisitant little Idaho town, our costume morgue has at least 3 idential costumes for the main roles. Hope this helps!

March 9, 2008 at 9:15 pm #676179I haven’t thought of using it for a film. Mainly just for Ren faires and Anime cons. At the Cons I go to we do this thing called the Rum Party where we all dress up as pirates and play games and generally have a fun time. It’s not historically accurate or anything. The only reason I was thinking of the gallery serpentine piece was that I might be able to wear it to more formal events in the “real” world . Cost wise they are both nearly the same because gallery serpentines prices are in ausie dollars that are worth less than the american dollar where the pirate captain’s coat’s cost is in euros which are worth more. It’s a large expenditure for me either way, which is part of the reason I was ask your opinion.

Engaged to a WeaselMarch 9, 2008 at 9:40 pm #676180I’m super-biased because the Serpentine one has a more Victorian flare. It’s downright classy. The other one is more fun, of course, but not as striking–or rather, it’s striking, but not in the same way.
Both are beautiful, though. It sort of depends on the type of character you tend to cater to while at cons/faires/Rum Parties. If you tend to be more dignified, go with the black one. For frivolity and fun I’d go for the teal, although you could probably get away with dignity there, too, just to a slightly lesser extent.
Knowing AnimeCons and Ren Faires, it’s probably a good idea to get whatever stands out more, since folks tend to go over the top as much as they possibly can.
And finally, because I’m a horrible person… There’s a place called Ravenswood Leather that sells gorgeous pirate coats. They’re made out of leather, which probably isn’t what you want, but they are truly astounding. Might be worth a glance.
March 9, 2008 at 11:53 pm #676181Another costumer oppinion
The first is fancier and more of what you would see a naval officer of the 1800s wear. Historically speaking, Pirates for the most part were poor, they tended to drink, gamble and wench their money away so it would be fairly unlikey that a ‘real’ pirate would own one unless ‘liberated’ from a captive officer and the it probably wouldn’t stay nice for very long.
The second appears to be a standard frock coat. Nearly any male of that era would have something similar.
For you, it would depend on what you want to do with it. If it’s more of a costume for Faires and cons and stuff, go with the first. If it’s for normal wear, just to be stylish yet different the second would probably be the best choice.
As for which would look best on you, this is really going to help, both. From the pics you appear to have a very fit and well proportioned body shape. and when you have a shape like that, particularly for males, you can get way with wearig pretty much anything.
So when you get the caot are you going to wear the propper Shirt, Breeches and Stockings too??? 😛
