Okay, my fiance (hee, hee. I can actually call him that now) just got his Christmas present from work. They gave all their employees…umbrellas… WTF??? They’re done in the corporate colour, have the corporate logo on them and on the inside, have a world map with all the different office locations indicated with little stars. And they’re actually really nice umbrellas, but really?? Umbrellas?? So they must have cost quite a bit to print…but you’re firing people left and right (they let go of 12 people in his office of 45), how about spending a little less on custom printed umbrellas and a little more on staff?? They’re not getting a Christmas party and my bf has to work the Mon, Tues and Wed between Christmas and New Years. Not any of the account people, since none of the companies that they work with will be open (it’s an advertising agency), just my bf and his co-worker. This company is going to hell in a handbasket.
I’m sorry but I’m still confused as to why any company would give freakin’ umbrellas as Christmas presents… 🙄

They want them to remember to save for a rainy day? 😈
Sorry, I’ve been baking with my daughters and I’m a little goofy right now.

ooooh boy!! XD XD XD
December 19, 2008 at 10:58 pm #746643I’ll bet it’s OLD stock from something years ago that they just unearthed and wanted to get rid of. My Christmas bonus is that I get to report to work on December 26th so he is one step ahead of me!!

That’s what I’m thinking. Sorry you have to work between holidays too DM.
December 19, 2008 at 11:32 pm #746645December 19, 2008 at 11:40 pm #746646actually.. even though custom printed stuff can be expensive.. if you buy in bulk you can get them very cheaply..
say there are 300 people that work in the company.. you can get the printed umbrellas for about $5 each..
and that’s not that expensive compared to bonuses or other gifts..
December 19, 2008 at 11:42 pm #746647But some seasonal that could be useful too. A scarf, gloves, heck an ice scrapper would be useful. And I would totally understand if their head office was somewhere warm like California or the Cayman Islands or something like that. But their big head office is in Paris (where it snows) and their North American head office is in New York (also where it snows).
I hope I’m not sounding like I’m greedy…after the year they’ve had, I wasn’t expencting them to give anything at all. I’m just surprised at the odd choice of gift.
December 19, 2008 at 11:45 pm #746648it’s probably just the company they got the deal through or whatever..
I know it’s a weird thing though.. I haven’t heard of it before.. but still it’s something.. hehe
December 20, 2008 at 1:00 am #746649That’s not weird. My husband got an umbrella one year, a coffee mug one year, etc… it’s their way of doing some subtle advertising and giving their employees an inexpensive ‘gift’ as well.
… while the bigwigs in the company got huge bonuses. 😉 It’s sad but the way things work oftentimes.
I’ve never gotten a Christmas gift from an employer.

My art: featherdust.comDecember 20, 2008 at 1:06 am #746650Since bf has been working 12-15 hour days, I think he’d trade in his umbrella for an extra person in his department. Considering advertising is what they do, letting go of 4 people out of his department, the graphic department which comes up and creates the ads, which only have 7 to start with is ridiculous. And of the 3 left, one is on sick leave for another 2 months. Leaving bf and his co-worker to try and finish everything for the end of the year.
December 20, 2008 at 6:04 am #746651Opa gets tons of “thank you for your business” gifts from the companies he employs on his building sites. There’s a lot of whine and liqueurs, as well as fine meats, sauces, pasta and pannettone, but there are other things as well. Flashlights, agendas, coats, caps, overalls, insulator blankets, beach towels, pralines, a huge cake – all customized by the company.
