I actually posted a pic of his wound on my livejournal blog…but thought it might be too graphic for here. I’d like to get my hands on the punk that did it. πŸ‘Ώ

While I’m very sorry about Cosmo’s injury, that might not be a gunshot wound. Does it have a bad smell? It might be a ruptured abscess if it smells bad. Of course I’m not there and can’t really say for sure based only on a photo. The skin in the area looks inflamed, though, and I think I see some necrotic (grayish-white) skin near the bottom of the wound. Those changes would be more suggestive of an abscess.

This is definitely not to downplay what’s happened to poor Cosmo! Whatever the cause, he’s still got a nasty injury on his neck and I feel very badly for all of you, seeing something like that on your boy. And I regret to agree that there are fools out there who will shoot at pets. Although–a small ray of sunshine–unless the bullet lodges someplace bad, it is an inert object and generally will sit still and cause no further harm. Not that I want a bullet in any of my pets either! But it’s amazing how many X-rays I’ve seen that showed a pet carrying BBs, airgun pellets, or even “real” bullets that nobody knew were there, and nobody could recall their pet having a wound.

If there’s any odor to that thing, antibiotics would be a really good idea. Just my two cents’ worth.

When I first looked at cosmo, this is also what i thought. I’ve had cats that had absess too. But there was no smell to his wound at all and the shape was wierd. it is hard to see, but in the photo, to the right, there is a small spot of pink. that is where a smaller puncture wound is. perfectly round and only about as small as half the size of a pea.
The area was swollen a little but not the smaller wound.

The day before, we gave him a bath and did a flea search and nothing was on his neck.

When touching it the night we found it, he was completely relaxing and not fussy as if it was not very sore yet.

The swelling was down yesterday(it was only slight swelling) and no puss has come out. I’ve been giving him warm compresses and put a little Neosporin on the wounds. It is looking a lot better today. a nice scab has formed, the wounds look very clean, no swelling, and Cosmo is acting pretty normal around the house.

it still makes me sick that people would just shoot a cat because it is loose πŸ™

I am so used to being able to let my cats out. our neighbors even let them go over into thier gurauge, they talk to them when they find them sitting on thier furnature. out other neighbor’s giggle when thier kids go to pet the cats.

thanks koishii, you worded it much better than I could have. πŸ˜€ I’m bad at describing wounds very well….

I’m pretty sure its a b.b. wound. I was worried it might be a pellet given that we had only found one wound. But projectile injuries of all types have similar charactoristics. An Entry wound and exit wound if you can find it. The entry wound is clean, often in the shape of the projectile. While the exit wound is messy. In this case we found both. As Koishi and PC have said we are treating the wound with antibiotics to prevent infection setting in. Unfortunately it is very unlikely we will be able to find who did this since we live in town an there are 100’s of house’s and appartments within a 1/4 mile radius. And Cats roam much farther than this.

They didn’t let me play with fire crackers at that age…..for good reason….No wonder the boys never wanted to date me when I got older….
