I had just watched a movie with PC and her husband. One of thier cats I saw, Cosmo, looked like he had a bite. I know animals get bit by other animals from time to time so I waited till after the movie to look at it and tell them.
After the movie I looked at it , but there was only one wound. I still thought it was a bite and told PC. but the more we looked at it, the more it did not look right to me. Pc and her husband then informed me that people here like to shoot at pets for fun. If it is in thier yard and it does not belong to them, they can and will shoot it.
I was pretty horrified by this. We were worried that he was shot by a pellet gun and that it may still be in his body, but after some searching we found, sure enough, an entry wound. This really just horrified me even more. The shot wound is on his neck.
I am not comprehending this very well. Pc lives in the middle of a residential area, and yet people want to shoot at animals, just because they happen to be there and think it is fun. I don’t even have much words for this because emotionaly it troubles me so deeply.
When I got here, they said they keep all thier cats inside, but Cosmo tries to escape a lot. I really understand the importance of this, and now that i know, it is hard for me to grasp.
I do not know if I will sleep much tonight. This has bothered me very greatly. Cosmo is a wonderful cat, we had a wonderful day of hiking and a good time watching a movie….just to have it end with finding a pet cat had come with in 2 inches of dieing, and all because some one in this neighborhood intended to kill it.
I just can not grasp this.

While I don’t appreciate the loose cats around my area killing off all the birds, I can’t fathom ever harming one. Around my area, apparantly some kids like to capture cats and behead them. This I really can’t understand. What’s worse is that when we found a chopped off cat’s head, the humane society around here could have cared less. They came around three days later, picked up the head, and did nothing. My family has always kept our cats indoors for this reason. (That and around our area, there are also plenty of wild animals that will make a meal out of a house cat.) We’re always very watchful to make sure that they don’t escape.

I understand it, but it is hard to swallow. Even in alaska we let our cats go outside and play and the worst that happend was another cat from up the street bit one of our cats.
Cosmo has gotten out a few times because I am not used to it, so i am pretty horrified over this.
October 1, 2008 at 5:49 am #734670Believe me, I don’t understand it either. I was horrified when we found the cat’s head. I don’t understand how people could do such a thing. Some people have no regard for life, and that fact is scary and upsetting.
Don’t blame yourself. I don’t think that there was anything you could have done. Some cats will do almost anything to get outside. Some cats can be a little too clever for their own good. Let’s just pray that Cosmo get through this experience okay.
October 1, 2008 at 6:48 am #734671I hope Cosmo will be ok. Poor kitty.
Yeah, stuff like that happens all over. I don’t see it much around here (or hear about it anyways), but I’ve heard of worse things (I won’t say what here). It never ceases to amaze me what people will do for ‘fun’. It does make one think, if they are willing to do that to a cat, what else are they willing to do? I don’t like to dwell too much on that thought.
A year or two before I went to college, my campus (it’s on a hill, surrounded by LOTS of woods, and, while the location is technically a city, it is pretty spread out, so it doesn’t feel anything like one… more small town… in the Catskills), a hunter was walking on campus with his new rifle, to head up to shoot some deer when hunting season started. Needless to say, Security escorted him of campus and his gone ended up in the garbage can (someone I knew had workstudy in the security office and saw the head of Security bring it in, and dump it in the trash can, after unloading it). The hunter didn’t even see anything wrong with what he was doing! Conveniently, he walked right in front of the main buildings where Security was located too! We used to find tree stands (for people hunting deer) on campus property when my friends and I would go hiking (we’d regularly demolish them). A friend was almost hit with a crossbow (not legal in NY) by someone hunting on campus property as well (nearly hit her in the head). I also had a neighbor’s grandson (no longer in the area, thank goodness!) who almost hit me with a ‘practice arrow’. I was riding my bike, wearing my bike helmet, and there was no metal tip, but it was pointed enough that if it had hit me on an unprotected part of my head (or worse, in the neck), it wouldn’t have been pleasant. He thought it was a joke. I, on the other hand, was not laughing. Missed me by about 6 inches (passed in front of me). He used to play with pellet guns as well (he shot at me once when I was riding by (most definitely residential) and I know he like practicing on the local wildlife (wild or stray).
The stupidity of some people with guns or projectiles is astounding.
October 1, 2008 at 9:35 am #734672I grew up near a dry riverbed. We used to go out there and wander around with our friends and climb the cliff there. More than once we were shot at by idiots out there, thankfully we were never hit, but idiots with guns tend to shoot at anything that moves without checking to see what it is way too much.
We’d yell and they’d recoil and quit. But it was a near thing more than once.

October 1, 2008 at 3:59 pm #734673yes, i’ve been shot at in south caralina while on my grandpas property by thier neighbors. idiots with guns. my sister and i were just kids.
October 1, 2008 at 4:04 pm #734674I can never understand this predilection to hurt other living beings, whether physically or mentally. It’s a power thing, and I just don’t have it.

http://www.sarahjestin.com/feedbacklists.htmOctober 1, 2008 at 4:16 pm #734675I think the saddest part is that humans feel a much higher range of emotions than do most other mammals and yet we have so many who want to do nothing more than hurt fellow human beings. 😥 Whether by hurting them personally or by hurting their pets. Where did those people’s compassion go? 😡
Yeah, my dad owns alot of guns, but he would be mortified if he EVER accidentally shot or shot at another human being, or their beloved pets. 😕 (And, if he was vindictive like that, I would turn him in myself. 👿 )October 1, 2008 at 5:30 pm #734676WindstoneCollector wrote:I think the saddest part is that humans feel a much higher range of emotions than do most other mammals and yet we have so many who want to do nothing more than hurt fellow human beings. 😥 Whether by hurting them personally or by hurting their pets. Why are people so cruel? The go out to intentionally hurt other animals and people just for the fun of it. It’s sickening. 🙁
October 1, 2008 at 5:31 pm #734677its simply horrifying how people can handle animals. I always say: as the animals so the humans. People doing this belong locked up.
I’m glad that around here this is forbidden and also controlled by law. We had cases of cat poisonings ten years ago in our town, the vet gave a call to the police and the literarley turned every brick in the region the cat was found. This and the fact that it was murmured over tea-tables and hence everyone eyeing and controlling one anothers actions has resulted that it never happened again.
I’d recommend that if the “law” does not play along well enough the best is to get the people into moving and being aware. If enough people pay attention to it “cat shooter” will no longer be taken with a shrug but with a glare of all surrounding neighbors. At least this is what worked here, people will think twice of their actions if neighbors talk bad about them. I dont know, it could be worth a tryOctober 1, 2008 at 7:17 pm #734678Like I said on PC’s thread, some people are just sick. 😡
My dad is a serious gun owner too, but he has never hunted with them. Only ever uses them at the target range. He is a huge animal lover and taught me and my brother to respect life, big and small. I guess that’s all we can pass on to our kids. Respect for life.

Really? Here in Edmonton, two people start torturing cats, and it makes the Edmonton Journal front page? This seems like a total flip of attitude to me.
Well the people here were doing more then just beheading though, unfortunately. Way more.
October 1, 2008 at 7:31 pm #734680The last time I caught someone bragging about hurting someone’s pet, they went to the hospital with a broken nose a few cracked ribs and a swollen groin….This was back in elementry school and the guy never told who assulted him….I told him that if he snitched I’d do worse and he was going to hell for what he said he did (firecracker in a cat’s rear).
I HATE people who are so cruel to animals, it pisses me off and saddens me SO much!!!
I think different states have different laws about harming properly identifiable pet animals (i.e. pets that have collars and tags) and legal action can be taken if you can prove who did it. Not really sure about all that, but worth looking into!
I’m sorry about Cosmo and I hope that he is ok! Sending big hugs for a speedy recovery!
