I was talking with a friend yesterday about the ponies and he mentioned the totally nice horse trailer I must have because I have show horses.
I told him, no, the trailer was the cheapest thing I’ve bought for the ponies. It was only $500.
He was like “OH, ONLY $500” like it was a ton of money.
I started thinking about it and was looking at how I spent money.
I think $500 for a horse trailer isn’t that much. But I think $500 for a dragon statue is a lot.So is it a strange way of thinking to base what a lot of money is on what you spend it on?
This same friend jokes about the $ Mike makes daily. But we have so many bills that I’m sure someone who makes 1/4 of what Mike makes nets more. So we are not “well off” in my eyes.
Is this strange?
Just thought it would be an interesting discussion.July 25, 2008 at 5:08 pm #496277July 25, 2008 at 5:14 pm #725069I’ve noticed the same thing. $250 for a plane ticket out to Sacramento is a deal, but I wouldn’t consider it ‘cheap’ in almost any other context…well, unless I was computer shopping!

But yeah, since my laptop is on the fritz (meaning the power cord is missing, and they don’t make the cord for that model anymore), if I found a laptop (a good one mind you) for $500 I would be so happy. As it is, I’m saving up for a Mac. God knows I hate Vista. 8)
July 25, 2008 at 5:39 pm #725072$500 is alot on anything really….but for bigger, more necessary things…the expenditure can actually leave you feeling good, because you know it coulda cost so much more. π
July 25, 2008 at 6:05 pm #725073Money is very subjective.
Me and my family has never had much extra. Subjectively to me, everyone here that has ever bought a Windstone either has more money than I do* (or, they don’t mind the credit card debt ), because I have never been able to afford to buy myself such a thing. So subjectively- is $500 a lot? Short answer, for me, is yes. Even for things I need… such as paying rent or doing a repair on a car… $500 is a big number.
*- Obviously this is no way to really look at this, but it is the way we will end up looking at it anyhow.
But as mentioned earlier, it is also subjective. Even though $500 is a lot of money to me no matter how it is spent, I can recognize that $500 for a horse trailer is a good deal, and I appreciate that.
If any of that makes sense. π

Ditto that!
July 25, 2008 at 6:36 pm #725076Here’s a story I have about $500.
My friend Joan and I both won scholarships when we were in college. Joan said, “It’s only $500,” and shrugged, like it’s nothing. I said to her, “Hold out your hand.” She did. I pretended to put money in her hand, and said, “Someone walks up to you and says, ‘Here’s $500 to go to school.'” Her eyes get big and she says, “OH! $500!” I think her perspective changed. π

My daughter could use that right nowJuly 25, 2008 at 7:35 pm #725078I used to think it was a lot of money, but now it will only pay a couple bills…. not even my car or house payment. I could blow $500 at the mall in one afternoon. I could sure use $500 right now though. π
July 25, 2008 at 7:38 pm #725079July 25, 2008 at 8:15 pm #725080I think everyone summed it up nicely…it depends what I’m spending the $500 on. π
July 25, 2008 at 8:29 pm #725081for a horse trailer $500 is pretty good.. I had a friend here whose dad went out and bought a horse for that much and then a trailer for the horse for $1000..
his family didn’t have the money for it at all but his dad was determined they would raise horses and race them and make money…
yet they didn’t have a decent working bathroom… and everything in the house was halfway put together or falling apart.. and they didn’t always have enough money for anything else…
to me that whole things was a lot of money to be throwing away.. not to mention having to feed the horse too..
but if you have everything that you need and you spend that much money it’s not as big a deal as it is if you’re struggling to pay bills or eat or anything like that…
I don’t have a job right now either… so $500 is a lot to me… but still fortunately I’ve been able to keep the bills paid… but having a job and being able to pay stuff without stress would be nice… but there’s a lot of us that feel that way right now…
