We tried a new type of fish called Escolar. It was absolutely delicious! Like the best fish I have ever tasted, rich and buttery , with no hint of fishiness ( I am not a huge fan of cooked fish, raw is fine though)

So I decided to find out what species it was and where it came from…

      this, from Wikipedia:
The escolar, Lepidocybium flavobrunneum, a species of fish in the family Gempylidae, is found in deep (200-885 m) tropical and temperate waters around the world. It is also known as snake mackerel, and sometimes is marketed as “butterfish” or “white tuna”, a controversial practice due to potential health problems related with consumption of the fish

      Health problems!
It can make you sick! It is banned in Japan becaue of this, but reading further it says it is not banned in the US because the side effects from eating it aren’t lethal. Excellent.I have Stomach cramps this morning, and I won’t go into further details.

I’ve never heard of this fish… I’m sorry you got sick from it. It’s so unfair when food that tastes so good can do such nasty things to your insides, blech.

Oooh, no, I just read a very informative (maybe too informative) article about escolar. The possible side effects are absolutely extremely unpleasant. Hang in there Melody!

That’s crazy! I just read more about the Escolar and I can’t imagine why the US would sell it knowing the health risks involved. –Out of curiosity, where did you get the fish from? A market or at a restaurant?

John purchased it from Market of choice. They DID tell him not to eat more than three ounces of it at once, but they didn’t say why.

Fish can sometimse be banned (especially in Japan) because of cooking methods over there. Just saying… If you like fish without fishy taste…try some Grilled Thresher Shark with Sweet Thai Chili Sauce….best fish I have ever had and I learned how to make it. It’s a captive bred fish/shark (I don’t eat unusual things found in the wild cause I believe thats where they belong and not in my tummy)….just in case the ‘shark’ thing made you wonder….
