I’m so sorry that the outcome wasn’t better 😥 but great that you found such a sympathetic vet. Hopefully Nibs’ tumor won’t come back quickly and he has a lot more time with you! Give him a kiss from me and warm hugs for you. Hang in there; we’re here for you.

Yeah the vet was awesome- hes owned several rats himself, but said he had to take a break from owning them since they dont live very long and its too much heartache. He could’ve charged us a ton of money, but he only charged for the time and materials, even though it turned out to be much more difficult than he had thought it would be. We probably would’ve had to put Nibs down if it wasnt for that vet.

And he seems to be doing pretty good this morning- he was so swollen last night, he looked all fat/puffed up, but he came out of his igloo for a few seconds th is morning to grab a treat and he looks a lot better- still very drowsy though from the sedative they gave him.

And even though the outcome is not what we were hoping for, I’m still glad that hes alive and that the tumor is gone for now- heres some pictures of what it looked like before his surgery (the tumor got even larger than this though- these were just the last pictures I took of it).

And thank you all so much for your kind words and twin, I’ll give Nibs a kiss for you as soon as hes well enough to be held! 🙂

That sounds like an awesome vet. Sorry the news wasn’t better. **Hugs for you and pats and treats for Nibs. And something for Soc, too so he won’t feel neglected.**

I’m sorry about the bad news. I send my best wishes to you and Nibs and I hope that the tumor stays away for a long time.

Wow, not sure how I missed all this, but I am very glad all went well, even if not perfect and that he’s still with you.

            *hugs*

I think that is a great outcome and the price was certainly right! Even if it does come back, it should take a while, right? I say congrats! Glad he came thru it ok. 😀

poor nibs. It must have been uncomfortable for him to walk with that thing. I’m glad he made it through surgery ok. give them both kisses for me cuz they are very cute!!!

AWW! the exact same thing happened to my Timothy! He looked almost exactly like your Nibs, except his hood was a little darker! He even got the tumor in the same place…how odd. I must have missed this thread, but I’m glad it could be removed. My Tim had surgery too, but they couldn’t get alot of tumor out, it was in his intestines and stuff. Then he managed to pull his stitches out with his teeth, little imp, even with a collar! The best I could do for him was to snuggle him, I had him almost 4 years, he was my baby! He like puffed rice, do your boys like that? he also would steal the curtains by pulling them into his cage and making a nest out of them! I used to be a manager at PetsMart, and Tim often came to work with me, he was leash trained, I’d tie the end of the leash to my belt and he’d sit on my shoulder, or in my really long hair, he liked to “groom” me by pulling my hair through his teeth. I miss Tim, give snuzzes to your boys for me!

Its strange that this thread got bumped today, I was thinking of doing an update- I couldnt sleep last night thinking about my Nibs.
He was doing great for a while, running around perfectly normally, even better and faster than the vet expected him to. He didnt bother his stitches, they were taken out without any problems and he was back to his old self.
But yesterday when I took him out of his cage to clean it, I noticed that like the vet had said would eventually happen, his lump is coming back. Its small right now, but if it grows as fast as it did last time it wont be long before its back to its old size and giving him more problems.

So theres really not anything I can do for him at this point. Eventually it’ll get so big that he wont be able to use the bathroom and that will cause all sorts of pain/damage, and if I have it removed again, it will just come back. So I’ll leave him alone for now, he really dosnt seem to notice it. But I dont think hes got a whole lot of time left before we’re going to have to take him to the vet and have him put down. Its so sad, but at least we bought him a little more time with the surgery. It didnt seem like a lot to me, but with their already small lifespans, it was about a few years comparatively.

And as sad as I am for Nibs, I am more worried about his brother Socrates. They have never, ever been separated. Even when Nibs had his surgery, the vet let Socrates stay with him overnight even though Socrates didnt need anything done. I’m just scared about how he is going to handle being alone, and I dont want to try and get another rat to keep him company because I’m afraid he would just fight with it. Hes never been with any other rat and has a very assertive personality.

Aww Tim sounds so sweet- thats so cool you got to bring him to work. I was never able to harness/leash train my babies, they just chew on it and if they get too nervous they poop, so that would’ve been a bit of a problem out in the world haha.
And I’ve never given my rats puffed rice before, but I’ll have to try that.
