You didn’t take the Beastie, did you?
Btw, welcome back GB. I missed you! 😀
Aw, thanks. And yes, I did take the Beastie, for all 4000 km of the trip. It had as much fun as I did, especially since it survived the trip without vibrating loose any screws or levers… 😆
I’m glad Beastie behaved and didn’t leave a trail of parts behind him!! 😆

The churches there – or anywhere in Europe for that matter – are mind-blowingly beautiful, but if you overdose on the gold, marble and masterful painting it all blurs after a while. One or two every few months is the proper dosage for me. (Or once a week to the same one, but we don’t have an actual church building, so that doesn’t work.)

Exactly….it was gold, marble and masterful painting overload! I prefered the outdoor sculpts and fountains much more…Trevi Fountain, The Four Fountains, St. Mark’s Square, etc.
May 20, 2009 at 1:24 am #763692Interesting how churches are always a place to visit on trips. When we went to New York City, we visited the old churches. When we went to St. Augstine, we visited the old churches. Same thing in New Orleans, etc. It’s not the only thing we saw, but they’re always on the list. I wonder if it’s because people put more effort into preserving them?
May 20, 2009 at 5:26 am #763693Partially that, and partially because in a Christian-based culture, the best of everything – effort, material, skill – was put into the church. There are no buildings with an opulence matching a church’s. Even palaces have a different, less overwhelming sort of gradiosity, because they were lived in.
May 21, 2009 at 1:02 am #763694Sadly, the modern churches here, in Florida, are lacking in character. They look like boxes, with no windows on the outside and movie theaters on the inside. I understand the reasoning behind the design, because of hurricanes, but give me stain glass windows and steepled roofs any 🙁 day.
May 22, 2009 at 5:09 am #763695Tell me about it. Zürich’s churches are rather sad affairs too, ever since Zwingli condemned all images and icons. The stonework of the buildings is great, but inside you’ve nothing left but the carved pews and some plasterwork.
And don’t get me started on the modern churches that get built, with all the emphasis on the particular taste of some post-modernist architect with no eye for beauty.May 23, 2009 at 8:38 pm #763696….so, back to the original question, I guess we always visit old churches when we go on trips, because the new ones are so ugly and boring. 😆

I suppose that is true. I love the architecture in some of the old buildings. They have a gorgeous church in Venice… and all over Germany, come to think of it.
May 29, 2009 at 6:01 pm #763698I’m in love with the cathedrals in England; ‘specially St. Paul’s and Westminster. There’s one in Windsor that is stunning but can’t recall the name at the mo… Notre Dame in Paris is a must see but for eye candy you should see the Lady Chapel at St. Chapelle (sp?) in Paris. The glass is in all shades of blue and green and purple, the ceiling is gilded stars over midnight blue… Stunning!

November 8, 2009 at 9:31 pm #763699If I could go anywhere in the world I think it would be to buy a nice RV and travel to every state in the good old USA including Alaska. I have been to Alaska once but it was a long time ago. I just think I would like to see everything I could in the country in which I live.

My parents are actually doing this! They sold their home, bought a RV, and have been visiting every state as they can. During 2010 they hope to see Washington, Oregon, and other states in that area.
I envy them!
