After 6 days, the power came back on. The next morning, we left for Ottawa to pick up our holidays plans – things just go delayed π
Here are pics around the house, in the field next door and the street. We lost branches and tree tops; lots of cleaning to be done, but it’ll probably wait until spring. No damage to the roof or the cars. Only a few branches fell on the driveway, and we cut those off. The back yard is a branchy mess, though, the dogs have the negotiate around them at night, so that’ll be the priority.

Male Hearth....one dayπ€Dream on.January 2, 2014 at 6:00 pm #907226These storms really are double-edged. On one hand they leave (parts) of the landscape shimmering like diamonds. On the other, the weight of the ice brings donw branches and leaves a trail of devasation, power outages, etc.
We were very lucky – no trees down and no power lost – just a pretty scene in the backyard.
Toronto has never (since they started recording such things) had an ice storm like this.
It’s a good thing that the power is back on, because today is brittle cold.
We might be going up to -15C, with a wind chill that makes it feel like -27C. Temperatures will likely drop to -21C overnight.
Eeek!
I’d love to pack up and head south about now. However, since many trees depend on a good freeze, this year will certainly give them that.Life is beautiful.
January 2, 2014 at 6:50 pm #907230We’re having quite the snowstorm here today. We’re suppose to get a foot and half by the end of today followed by more snow over the weekend. My puppy might get lost in the drifts, she is not real keen on snow or rain. The huskies think this is GREAT! …..they don’t have to drive in it lol. Hope everyone stays safe in this.

Ha! Maybe you could hitch them up, huh?
My brother-in-law had a husky, and took him jogging – that dog just LOVED running, even with his deformed hips. The colder the weather, the more he liked to run, too π

Love the rocket-powered Junco in this photo!!
We are getting snow here, too. About a foot… which isn’t very much for us here in lake-effect country, but the overnight wind chills are supposed to be around -30Β°F… that’s pretty brisk.

Here he is:
With a friend (a goldfinch, I think):
And other visitors! Chickadee and red-breasted nuthatcher.
We also get another type of nuthatcher, a bigger one, but I haven’t had the chance to photograph them. Cardinals and blue jays, too.
At -20 C, these little guys are so fluffed up against the cold, they’re almost double their size right now π

http://www.sarahjestin.com/feedbacklists.htmJanuary 3, 2014 at 5:10 am #907274White-Breasted Nuthatches are the larger cousin to the one in your photo (Red-Breasted). We get all of them plus some! They are a delight. The chickadees will feed out of our hands if we are patient. I’m not so patient when it’s negative 30F out though!!
I think your possible goldfinch is a different species of finch, maybe a female house or purple finch. This time of year it can also be a chipping sparrow. Hard to tell from the photo. π

My art: featherdust.comJanuary 3, 2014 at 8:39 am #907284I have always wondered how these birds survive in this cold weather. Do they have shelter in holes in trees or where do they go to get out of the snow and cold? We throw birdseed outside and get a bunch of little birds. We also have crows and magpies and I see blue jays once in a while. We have lots of squirrels and jack rabbits and I even saw a couple skunks crossing the two foot high snow drifts in different yards in the last week.
Looking for rainbow or pink & teal grab bags!
January 3, 2014 at 1:38 pm #907289Ugh, we were told on the news 6 to 8 inches, 8 to 10 inches, then 10 to 12, then 12 to 14…. so yea, I just got to work after shoveling an easy 18 inches to get my truck out. >_< I hate new England SO MUCH… I swear this is my last year in MA if it's the last thing I do.
I just replaced my fuel pump yesterday just in time for the store though so at least my truck is running strong $613 later. It got me to work on time so money well spent I suppose. (too bad it's no fun though) LOL!

We have to shoo away the chickadees when we need to refill the feeders π I like to stand and listen to them flit around. The white-breasted nuthatch makes this squeaky toy noise, it’s awesome.
I tend to mix up the common sparrow with the goldfinches in the winter. Some do keep a bit of yellow, but the females usually have none left on their winter feathers.
We have hawks (we feed everyone here!), blue herons, kingfishers, mallard and wood ducks π Aside from birds, we have the usual rabbits, black squirrels, the smaller red squirrels and a mink – the dang thing was eating all my kois!
I love my new place π

http://www.sarahjestin.com/feedbacklists.htmJanuary 3, 2014 at 5:59 pm #907308It finally happened… My car won’t start. π
I don’t know if I should simply replace the battery or get one of those power pack thingies…
January 3, 2014 at 6:02 pm #907309We got buried in almost 18 inches of snow in the northern suburbs of Chicago. Snow has finally stopped but we will be getting days early next week with HIGH temperatures around -10 degrees F! I really just want to burrow in some blankets and not go outside again till spring.
