February 26, 2007 at 8:37 pm #542062I know I’m late reading this thread since I’ve been away but I have my own two cents about art criticism and the comments I’ve read in this thread. I’m in agreement with Admin that there is a difference between saying “I don’t like that piece”/”The blending needs work” and “that’s so hideous, they should be ashamed” sorts of comments.
Yes, it’s true that when you decide to post something in a public sphere like Ebay, you are inviting any sort of comments and feedback. But very few people are actually ASKING for harsh, cruel feedback that has no constructive purpose – who would actively want such a thing? Being truthful is one thing but it costs nothing to spend a few minutes to think about how you are writing before you press that Submit button and doing so isn’t sugarcoating, it’s being considerate of the person on the other end of the screen who you know next to nothing about but they are still a human being with feelings. If someone said these sorts of comments to you but then excused themself with “I’m just being honest” or “That’s what you get on the Internet”, would that make you feel better? Should we sit back and accept that since there are a lot of jerks on the Internet, it’s okay for us to occasionally sink to their level and make petty comments?
After spending four years in an art program and countless hours having to put up with boorish remarks about myself and my art under the safety blanket of “art criticism”, I fully don’t buy the concept that truthful and honest art criticism can only be delivered in a blunt or brutal fashion. It is very much possible to express your feelings about an artwork and be polite about it, and the only thing stopping most people is they can’t be bothered to rephrase their intial gut response of “I hate it!!”
It’s not about the Admin policing us or “watching over our shoulder”, the core message was that we should be policing ourselves, that we should show some restraint and consideration and take that five extra seconds to weigh the pros and cons of indulging in an activity like the backbiting here and really ask ourselves whether it’s okay to insult someone because we don’t think they are here to see it?
And if you subscribe to the concept of “Anything said on the Internet is fair game to say anything about” then the same thing is true of your own comments and you should consider whether you are truly comfortable having people use your policy to measure your own comments by the same brutal/blunt standards. I wouldn’t feel comfortable setting myself up for that sort of no-holds-barred verbal sparring but your milage may vary. I do know that more than one user on this board has been upset by having their words dissected and then misunderstood so I would suggest you use discretion before offering yourself up for that.
March 1, 2007 at 1:25 pm #542063Critisism is our own worst enemy. But, I see where everyone is coming from. 😳
March 1, 2007 at 1:25 pm #542064LOL, WSC.
March 1, 2007 at 1:27 pm #542065I had to change that, i didn’t read the whole thread, so I thought I should be politically correct GB! But thank God someoen saw it first! 😆 😆
March 1, 2007 at 1:30 pm #542066You’re safe now, but I still think the first version was funny. 😛
