Hey everyone-
There is a difference between offering critique/CC and just being ugly about something.
I’m not going to tell anyone they can’t have an opinion here or mod anyone’s post, but folks, let’s keep it a little less volatile. You ARE most assuredly allowed to say if you don’t like something. You ARE allowed to say why.
There is a big difference between saying “That is ugly/hideous/crappy/sucks”, and saying “I really don’t like that piece.”
There is a difference between saying “That is a crappy paint job” and “They could have used better blending.” They are both essentially the same opinion and both valid, but one is unnecessarily insulting, while the other is much more low-key and possibly even helpful.
Remember the spirit of these PYOs is to have fun, and I’m not trying to impose a magical fantasy happyland on anyone, nor am I handing out rose colored glasses. There’s just no need to be nasty or insulting about it though.
Also remember that many PYO painters are new to painting and are just having fun. I know that only a handful of people here are artists looking to further a career and dedicate yourselves to making better artwork- many are hobbyists just looking to paint something enjoyable. Not everyone needs or wants critique. If your grandmother started painting ceramics for just for fun, would you launch into a harsh critique of her work, or would you ask her if she wanted tips first?
Just food for thought guys. Let’s play nice. π
February 20, 2007 at 7:19 pm #542012I just saw this back on ebay too and was wondering if you guys were chatting about it. I guess I missed alot. I agree, the paint job is not exactly professional looking by any means (sugarcoating, I apologize), but some people have a knack for painting while others don’t. It’s too bad that this seller will probably suffer because I really don’t think someone is going to pay 40 dollars for that paint job. Not to say it’s terrible in the eyes of the seller, they may have worked very hard and think that their effort is worth the money. With all of us, more skilled painters, with out PYOs on ebay I’m sure we are taking the attention away from it and ours do look nicer in comparison. They may just be unexperienced and not understand why we get such better prices for our work. You’d be surprised how many people overlook the fine deatils like that. A picture is worth a thousand words though. I’m wondering if the seller may try to contact Water, or someone who sells alot of PYOs and ask for advice?
The shipping is definately overbearing though. I think that they may be tring to recoupe/ or just make some money by doing that. I mean, I went to the post office today to ship out 6 boxes. While I was there a woman was in the line across from me trying to send a box to Belgium. She was saying she thought it should cost 12 dollars and not 27 like the postal worker was quoteing her, but after a few minutes of bickering about the price she just shrugged and said it didn’t really matter because she charged them 35 dollars for shipping anyway and laughed about how the money would NEVER come out of her pocket. So really, if she was expecting it to cost 12 dollars she was going to intentionally overcharge 23 dollars. Almost double!
I agree with SPark alot though. I just don’t want to start critiquing someone elses work without them knowing it.

I could have been much more constructive about what I said, and I didn’t, possibly because I didn’t stop to think about the real person on the otherside before I posted. Thank you to those who have helped me learn something and I hope to better myself with this insight.
Still love the rest of you! =P
February 20, 2007 at 7:37 pm #542014Not that I like the paint job, but Im more questioning the integrity of the seller. It relisted so fast! That, with all the negative feedback for excessive shipping (that is given AFTER the auction ends and is NOT actuall shipping costs) leads me to believe they are not a nice person. Add that to the paint job and it just gives us alot to talk about. Sorry if I offended, but I dont like folks who are underhanded with their auctions…. We ALL have dealt with them and complained about them on this very forum.

hey- maybe I want a magical fantasy happyland!
Sounds kinda nice to me! lol
Can the windstone dragons be alive there too?
hmmmm- now everyone is either going to laugh or think I’m an idiot π― *sigh* oh well
πFebruary 20, 2007 at 7:42 pm #542016Everyone is allowed thier opinion, good, bad, blurted out or carefully written. At the risk of standing infront of a firing squad, I for one am starting to feel like there is a “big brother” standing over my shoulder whenever ever I post something. Yes, I really think that particular ebay item looks like something my dog left outside after getting into the trash…but I saw admin was on and knew people were gonna get a hand slapping. π
But hey, thats solely MY opinion. I agree with Ski, this seems like an underhanded seller, not someone who is truely interested in doing a professional, quality job…
February 20, 2007 at 7:58 pm #542017ummm well I didn’t think I was THAT harsh, but I did go back and clarify what was bad about it. This is not happy rainbow land. We are people…I get enough political polite stuff at work. I also believe that a good crit is helpful. I post my work on DA and all I get allll day is. Nice, cute, pretty, wow. Over and over. Sometimes a good. Dude that leg is way to long, would do me good.
oh well.
Anyway if that person who made the Kirin comes here, we will be sure to point out ways to improve in a nicer manner I am sure.February 20, 2007 at 7:59 pm #542018You know, SPark had a very good point… if you are selling your artwork, you are opening yourself up to critique from consumers (us) weather you like it or not.
Dang it… is it Weather or not? Wether or not?? I tried to google it… *Grumbles off to go get an education*…
February 20, 2007 at 8:24 pm #542019The word your looking for is whether, Ski…lol
edited for spelling… sheesh…
February 20, 2007 at 8:24 pm #542020Whether, Ski. π On this subject I tend to agree with SPark.
February 20, 2007 at 8:28 pm #542021BAH! Thanks guys… I had a brain fart. I knew it wasn’t right but could not remember for the life of me what WAS right! π
