Okay, here is another little pet peeve of mine.

The “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything” rule shouldn’t apply to art critique! If you’ve drawn or painted or otherwise created something and it’s hideous, people should TELL you. If everyone just goes “Oh, it’s lovely” you’re going to someday embarrass yourself hugely, because you think your work is wonderful, when it’s NOT. Trying to be nice to somebody when they’ve painted a monstrosity is not doing them any favors.

That thing is ugly. It has a few redeeming features, and if I was giving the artist a critique, I would make a point of pointing out the good stuff, because it is nice to do so. But somebody needs to mention the bad stuff to, so you can LEARN how to improve! If nobody tells you what you’re doing wrong, how are you going to fix it?

I took an art course once, and I had a teacher that actually TOLD us what we were doing wrong, and I can tell you even though all my classmates HATED him, that was the best course I’ve ever taken, I learned more than I ever had from all the courses where the teacher tried to be nice to us.

(So you guys know – if I say I love your work, that means I really do love it! I don’t believe in sugar coating my opinions at all.)

And if you’re so very tender hearted that you can’t bear to hear about the faults in your work, then maybe you should just keep your work to yourself, and not show it in public. And certainly not sell it!

I admit I was going to bid to repaint but I think the paint is on way too thick to make it worthwhile for me. This piece wouldn’t have looked half bad if they stuck with one spot style option and went with it rather than dividing it up into three separate sections of using 3 colors in different spotty ways. That’s like indecision. It makes for a gloppy looking piece and it’s sad because it did take the painter time to do all that work in the first place and the colors do work well together, just not in this fashion. I bet if they redid it and stuck with one style, it would be a decent sculpture.

I see what you mean, though…I appriciate good feedback and I would def not make a good art teacher!

I don’t know if I can say cheap paint because I use both the cheap and the good stuff, it’s just the painter’s way of using it. There also looks to be golden interferance on it in that one close-up of the head…so the painter knows something about that and perhaps does come on the forums to know about what we like to see. But another thing, it looks stark because there’s no attempt to blend solid colors. If there was some blending it would look smoother and more realistic.

Perhaps this was painted with quickness in mind to sell, or maybe it’s painted by a youth who’s trying it for the first time and doesn’t have prior paint know-how, you know? I know a few parents have contacted me over EBay about getting sculptures and what brands of paint to use for their kids to paint and sell. This could just be something like that.

In any case, it’s someone’s try, and while it’s not the most wonderful looking style, it can be improved on and I hope they do read the forums. Even my own first few pieces weren’t the greatest looking things.

I cant see a kid having all that feedback on Ebay… I can see maybe a parent selling for their kid, but if that were the case, I think it would have sold to the first time. The whole thing seems fishy. Oh well… it probably wont go any higher the second time around.

I guess then, next time one of my design instructors simply says: That’s hideous, redo it! I should whine about him not saying anything nice/giving me something constructive to go on?

It’s happened to me, but I’m smart, I figured it out, and I got an A. Most of the time it was pretty darn obvious to me what was wrong, I was just too lazy to fix it/thought it would do until my teacher ripped it off the wall and threw it in the floor to move on to the next one.

The art world outside of the ‘net (and design, especially!!) ain’t sugarcoated. I don’t ask for candy coating, and I don’t give it in return. A lot of pieces I was so proud of, I walked away from for a few days, came back to look and them and thought “well hell…that’s ugly!”

Any good artist needs to be able to get enough distance from their work to make that kind of observation, especially if they’re going to publicly display/sell. Otherwise, people are going to tell them whether they like it or not.

If the person was on the forum, im sure they would get constructive critisism, but since they are not a member, anything we say will just be talking about them. Its hard to give consctructive critisism when they are not here.

I don’t really see anybody talking about *them* specifically, just that the paint job…needs work. Some more direct than others. And no comments yet bashing their artistic skills as a whole.

If they lurk, they’re getting their feedback, directly or indirectly.

star asked me about that thing….and I appropriately found the little barfing smiley….

I wouldn’t even pay the $35 that the sculpt went for…

at first I did feel pity for this little kirin- and wondered what the heck he/she was doing listing it– BUT who am I to judge others artwork?
My husband though it looked possesed- but that is the style some people like– it is not something you usually see on a windstone thats all– sorta goth or something.
Maybe the artist is just starting out– or maybe they just messed up and figured someone might like it- so why not sell it on eBay. It does kinda seem like shill bidding a bit but the deal MAY have fallen through– who knows!

I for one don’t like the additude- well I am just being honest so who cares if I hurt your feelings– I think it is easy to be that way on an online forum where you don’t have to look the hurt person in the eye. JMO I guess it would be different if the person who created this kirin had asked our opinion- but they didn’t- plus just because some might think it is hidieous doesn’t make it so– I am sure there are artist who make a lot of money painting stuff we would think is crap.. that is the wonderful part about art!

That being said– I could help but laugh at a couple of comments in this thread– so I am just as guilty as anyone!

                        #542010

I think this is a case of “it must look better in person”. I do wish they would have taken better close up shots. It really doesn;t look like there was any attempt at blending, and in some areas it looks like they just plopped down a spot of paint the shape of the brush. I wonder if they used a flat house paint, it looks so matte in places.

It seems to me like the painter must have seen other PYOs on ebay and wanted to try it. However, the paint job just doesn’t appear to be the quality that most on ebay are, and the Ki Rin in my opinion doesn’t seem to be “collectible quality”.

There is a large and visable difference between the work we see forum members doing and this Ki Rin. I think it would take a blind person not to see that. Maybe this was the best the person could do, and if thats the case, great, I’m glad they tried something new. It certainly is OOAK!!
