trying to research my heritage and confirm my cherokee ancestry….but having a miserable time. I could really use some help. I’m looking up my mother’s side of the family, but since they’ve disowned me I dont have the convenience of asking a relative for more info. Here’s the info I have…
me.
Patricia lee riddle (my mother)
Colene riddle (my grandmother)
Mervin riddle (grandfather)I know colene and mervin lived in albany, ky (clinton county) for most of their lives. They had five children…including my mother…My grandfather always said he was half cherokee, his mother was full, but I dont know her name. any help would be awesome…I’ve been searching over and over and never finding anything…any tips?

January 21, 2008 at 9:07 pm #658307This is a great site to start from:
http://genealogy.about.com/library/onestop/bl_beginner.htm
Things work slightly different in Canada so I’m not sure how to go about it in the US. You might want to try the census bureau in the state they lived in.
Hope this helps.
January 21, 2008 at 9:08 pm #658308If I am not mistaken, cherokee come from Tenn. That might help Alittle but I am not sure. My grandfather was half cherokee and his mother full, and they came from Tenn…. ?
ancestry.com was a good site… 9 years ago, it seems too complicated now… π No one should have to pay to find out where they came from, I think that is wrong… but that is just me.
Do searches on Sir names… your grandfathers last name (if you have it)… sometimes that helps…
There was one site that gave me a family tree and I cannot remember what site that was or if it even exsitis any more.
I hope that you find a way!!!

The folks who do all that research gotta make a living, too π It costs alot of money and time to research geneology.
Good luck and I hope the websites help. No chance you can get your parents help? Time heals all wounds.
January 21, 2008 at 9:25 pm #658310Sometimes doing a google search on the names will turn a genealogy site created by someone already doing research on that name. I need to resurrect some research on my mother’s line for my nephew. I’ll have more information on sites to check out when I get home.
January 21, 2008 at 9:30 pm #658311http://www.familysearch.org/ may also turn up something useful, they have a HUGE database of names and information.

Last time I saw my mother she dislocated my jaw. I was told at the age of 9 that I was the biggest mistake she ever made…..doubt time has healed that. π
January 21, 2008 at 9:36 pm #658313I did however find out that my grandmother never married my grandfather….she was born with the last name riddle… π found that on ancestry.com

January 21, 2008 at 9:45 pm #658316hmmmm….found birthday, death date….cant find my grandmother’s parents or any birth cerfificate info…sigh..
January 21, 2008 at 11:32 pm #658317If you know when and approx. where your g’mother died you might be able to find an obituary for her in the local (area she lived in) newspaper. Most papers have on line archives and include obits. Obituaries usually provide a wealth of information, including who preceeded the person in death and who the survivors are. It should also have the name of the funeral home that handled the arrangements and since you are a relative, you will have access to those records. Do you have names of your g’ma’s parents or siblings? If you have a nearby Mormon Church, check with them to see where the nearest Family History Center is. Take the info you have to them and they will help you find the records you need. The only fees you may have through the Family History Center is for copying documents and the nice thing is you’ll have free access to Ancestry.com. I’ve found that the volunteers that work there are always very helpful and friendly and can suggest other sources to look in when I’ve exhausted all my clues. Good Luck! Please let us know how your hunt goes and feel free to PM me. I have some experience in family history hunting π

Just confirming that Cherokee were mainly in Tennessee. My grandpa is from Tennessee and he’s primarily Cherokee. Maybe we’re related! π
