The more I read of this, the more it saddens me. I really think her family would want at least the special pieces (the ones that are marked with sentiments), so they could keep a bit of her spirit with them. This last bit, the one with the quilt, has me typing through tears..
I’m so sorry the shopkeeper was rude to you, Aetharia. You’ve got a good heart, not everyone does. 🙁

I turned it over and sure enough, there was a small message stitched into the bottom corner. Usually a quilt maker will sign their work somehow, either by stitching it or even hiding it in the fabric in some special way.
The message was done in black embroidery thread, and it reads.
“For Tristan”
“From Grandma Maggie”
“2007”Does anyone know a woman named Maggie on the forums??
This is getting fishier by the second. First the shopkeeper that dosn’t want to say anything, and now more personal momentos? This is starting to paint a rather bad picture. It’s starting to smack of more than someone simply passing away. The hurried nature of the whole deal has me thinking coverup.
Whatever you do… proceed with extreme caution now. This is setting off my cop instincts.
February 12, 2008 at 8:51 pm #664039usually stuff that was a gift goes back to the relative…. 😕
February 12, 2008 at 8:53 pm #664040That’s so sad. My bf and I have several quilts that his grandmother has made for us and I would be terribly upset if we lost them.
It is possible that the owner of the store thought that you might want to contact the family to see if they had more dragons…thereby, cutting her out of the deal.
But you’ve done all you can so far, try and take some comfort in that.
February 12, 2008 at 8:55 pm #664041this is getting sadder and sadder by the second. Grandma maggie…I’ll do some searching of my own.
My most wanted list: Peacock kitty wizard, carnelian mouse wizard, copper patina frog wizard, autumn leaf poads, pumpkin spice kitties
February 12, 2008 at 8:59 pm #664042I really don’t know. At this point I’m going to stay out of it and not try to speak with her again.
I also think that I probably will be keeping all of these dragons, until I figure out what to do. If anything, I would rather give them back to Windstone, or give them all to one person. I don’t think I could seperate any of the pieces from each other. Not after all this mess.
My fiance is suggesting more cabinets and shelves. I’ll have to talk to him about it, since our brood would almost triple should we decide to keep all of these windstones. But, he’s as upset as I am, and he may even go and talk with the shopkeeper himself.

I wonder if the name Maggie might help Melody figure out who this person was….since now we have an idea of the loction and the forst name ❓
It is kinda strange about the store keeper but she may not know anything if someone from the family just sold her all of the boxes….I mean she might not have even known them at all and becasue of the type of store it is…..she probably didn`t ask them for any contact info, she probably just paid them for the boxes and that was it.
It is very sad tho that whoever the family memeber was they didn`t keep any of the personal item.I know that a while back I had an oppertunity to help a friend whos dad owns a storage unit….I helped him clean it out and there was ton`s of personal stuff in there as well adn the person who owned the contents in the unit dissapeared….I handed over the personal paperwork and photos to the police but the rest we donated to a shelter because we had no idea what to do with all the stuff.
So I guess what i am trying to say is that a kind of understand what it feels like and I know that it was hard on me personally. So I`m sure it is not easy for you at all.

February 12, 2008 at 9:02 pm #664044OK first of all I have to say I DOUBT they are stolen. If some one did not know the value especially for e-bay they would not just DUMP them off. When you steel it’s usually becasue you need the money.
Second of all you have to remember there is a confidentiality matter that we are dealing with here. If the lady has been asked not to say anything at the families wishes she CAN’T tell anyone anything. If she did break this she will be in BIG legal traouble.
I know how some here might take this but it seems that we may NEVER be able to find the official owner of these pieces. I HATE to bring up the “Secret” again but the univers brings you what you need when you need it. Maybe this woman was the guardian angle you never knew you had?? Aetharia I KNOW how badly you want to find out who this was and since are are a family here we all feel this loss but it seems like she was making sure you found her collection for a reason maybe she quided you to the store that day to to be the new guardian of her treasures.
I KNOW this may sound harsh but having just gone thru the loss of my mom in April some times things are better left unknown.
Some families are very private and do not want private things out there. The most important thing is her treasurers are now in good hands instead of being broken to bits.
They belong to you now and you and ONLY you can decide what to do with the pieces you have found.
As they say you can’t take your material posessions with you. If her family did not want them then shouldn’t we rejoyce that someone here that really wanted them found them??Even if you do finally find out who she was how will that help anything?
February 12, 2008 at 9:04 pm #664045I can’t help wondering if she hasn’t been stuffed in a nursing home somewhere and the family doesn’t want to think about it…I’m probably too paranoid. 🙄
But that quilt is marked 2007–so recent!

If you decide to keep all of the dragon that to me sounds like a good idea…at least they will all stay together.. 🙂 but if you decide to sell all of them or some of them….I also think that it would be really nice to keep them together even if they are in two seperate groups.
Please let me know if there is anything I can do or help with.

February 12, 2008 at 9:09 pm #664047DM has a point. I think this was the universe’s way of looking out for you and whomever you decide to share your treasure with.
But if you want to look for more clues, be sure to look at the names Marge and Margaret. Maggie is short for both of those names.Looking for Blue Fawn Baby Kirin
Sanguine Oriental Test Paints, kinglet
Sun Dragon Koi #3February 12, 2008 at 9:11 pm #664048That Quilt has got me wondering. I have a blanket that my grandmother made for me and a little doll quilt that she helped me make and both are treasured possessions. I also know that 95% of the people that I know would NEVER let something like that out of their hands.
Though I wonder, if the quilt is so recent, maybe it was never given to the intended person? A family in grieving may not have looked for the senitment stiched into the quilt.
February 12, 2008 at 9:11 pm #664049Dragonmaster asked:
“Even if you do finally find out who she was how will that help anything?”
It’s not really what it would help… it would just be knowing who she is. I didn’t know any of my grandparents, and this woman seems like someone who cared for her grandchildren very much. She would have been someone I would have -wanted- to know. Judging by the little keepsakes I’ve found, she had to have been a very sweet lady.
And to even mention that she might have just been placed in a nursing home really sickens me. It just makes me want to know even more who she is and what happened to her, because I’d definitely be getting in touch with her and offering to bring her back all her dragons to decorate her room.

I think you should keep them all for the time being. You don’t necessarily need to display them, but just keep them. Once we’ve either figured out who this woman was – or not, because we may not – then you can decide if you want to still keep them, sell them, or give them away.
If you decide to sell, don’t feel guilty. This is the reason why you bought them in the first place; to resell, no? As long as you sell to someone you know will love them as much as this woman did, that’s the important part.

They could have been stolen off the back of a moving truck, for all we know. Obviously, neither the person dropping them off nor the shop keeper had an idea of what some of the dragons are worth to collectors. A quick buck is better than nothing.
Take a look at any major city’s news reports. People are robbed for nothing more than a hit of crack. People are murdered for loose change, jackets, sneakers, etc.
I’m not saying they are stolen…but it’s as probable as anything else at this point.
