I just lost my childhood dog today. She was a salt and pepper miniature schnauzer named Sugar. She was 13 and she had cancer. I know it was great that she lived such a long life and I am very grateful but it doesn’t seem to dull the pain.

We got Sugar when I was 10. We went on many adventures. I remember crawling on my hands and knees through the underbush in the woods following her. We both got spayed by a skunk! There was another time where she went riding with me on my pony and I would pretend she was a pokemon and my pony was Rapidash. We had many advnetures on my parents farm. She loved me so much that she chewed up my favorite stuff animal while I was in the shower beacuse she was jealous 😆
She was my protector from the scary monsters in my room and would protect me while I slept. She growled at the boyfriends I would bring home and would let me know which ones she liked by licking their hand. When I went to college I had to leave her at my parents but she was always waiting at the door to welcome me back home. Today I have lost my best friend but she will always be remembered by all the good times.

I would like to hear others stories of their childhood animals. Its always nice to remember.

Losing a childhood pet is never easy. 😥 When I was young we had a Keeshond named Spike. He was larger than the AKC standard, but I don’t think he was a mixed breed. We had him from 1981/2 until 1993/4. He was the friendliest sould you’d ever meet. He would grin at visitors to our yard. Only thing is if you didn’t know he was a friendly dog you’d think he was snarling when he was showing his teeth. My parents actually had to read on of their own meters because the meter man was scared of him. 😀

My husband’s family used to have a brindled Boxer named Sam. He was another teddy bear of a dog. He and my husband were best friends. Sam never forgot him whenever he had to leave for basic training, AIT, being stationed in Germany for 2 years, being deplyed to Iraq. You could mention my husband’s name and Sam would start quivering in excitement. And don’t get me started on Sam and squirrels! Sam had to be put to sleep near the beginning of my husband’s second deployment.

I’m so sorry for everyone’s loss. Pets are part of the family and when they go, they take a piece of your heart with them. I didn’t have any childhood pets because we lived in places that didn’t allow pets and my dad was allergic to anything with fur. We had parakeets, but I never bonded with any of them except for the last one we called ‘Bluey’. I was the one who cleaned his cage and when he died it just broke my heart.

When I became married, we had two small dogs, a Shih Tzu and a toy poodle. The Shih Tzu developed an auto immune diease and we had to put her to sleep when she was only 9–just broke my husband’s heart. The poodle became diabetic and I was giving him shots 2 times every day. That lasted for another 3 years and at age 12-1/2, we finally had to put him down as well. Neither one was easy and their memories live forever with me.

I have 2 small dogs now–one is 13-1/2 a Pom mix and the other is 3-1/2 an Italian Grehound. The Pom, Percy pulled me through my husband’s passing in 2000–don’t know if I would even be here if it weren’t for him. He’s in good health and I feel he’ll be around a few years more but I know that day will come.

Pets add so much to our lives and it’s hard when they are no longer there, but they forever live in our hearts.

Losing furbabies is one of the hardest things in life, maybe a little more so than others because their time with us is so relatively short. Sending out the biggest fuzzy hugs in the world to Griffin and Peg!!!! We love you guys dearly and are here for you if you ever need to talk or just “get it out”. You are among friends who love you and will stick by you!

                MUCH LOVE AND WARM FUZZIES!!!!

Aww, Griffin-Sugar sounds like she really was the perfect friend. That’s so cute that she would ride on your pony with you ^_^ I never had a “friend” dog as a kid-but Ive got one now. She’s a 50lb Husky, so I can’t exactly carry her around in a purse like I’d like to (you know…to keep her with me all the time…..haha) but I do try to take her with me when Im going to run short errands like the post office, or picking up food, running to the store for 1 or 2 quick things. She hops up in the back of my car and settles down happily, stopping at red lights to stick her nose out the window 🙂 When she hears me pull up in the driveway, she’s whining and scratching at the door while I fumble with the keys-and when that door opens…man, you’d think she’s jet propelled, the way she runs back and forth with excitement 🙂

My deepest sympathy goes out to you I know how it feels to lose your best friend. As you probably know (everybody here does they have all heard me crying) that I lost my furbaby , Tristen, April 1st and I still cry at least once a day. When I was growing up my mother wouldn’t let us have pets but a cousin snuck a couple in and they were cats, Buster and Nosy, but as an adult I have had 5 one cat, Panther, and 4 (all chows) dogs, Kwan, Starfire, Hope and Tristen and I cried everytime I lost one of them.

Hugs to you! Losing a beloved childhood pet is never easy! 😥

I lost my childhood dog, Pixie, last June 25, and I still miss her and love her terribly. She was the only dog I’ve ever had, and I will remember her with the fondness that she deserves. She was truly my best friend as well.
