They all look great so far, including the one sent to me. I received a wonderful black griffin with wing nicely blended from purple to red to orange-yellow on the wings. This is my first griffin and now I want more. π I am not sure who painted this as it is signed with the person’s name, not the forum nick. Thank you, I love him! π
Unfortunately my web host is having issues with the server I am on, so I can’t post pics yet. I will definitely put them up as soon as I can.
That was me. π³ Sorry I forgot to sign him with my forum name. I’ll see if I can pull a picture off my camera to post.November 17, 2008 at 1:51 am #7396332Huberts wrote:They’re all wonderful, but I’m kinda partial to the blue and silver. π
You’re so sweet! π

Actually it can make it a lot harder on a painter not to have anything to go off of at all.
really β that’s when i do my best but then that’s why i never got more into art,i was never any good at doing something i was told to do,and i was lucky my older sister taught me so much that my teacher’s would have me do the basics for the grades, then just let me do whatever i wanted the rest of the time,my high school art teacher always called me her free spirit artist π

For this swap I was given no preferences other than “no unicorn please.” No prefered colors, themes, et cetera. Since Zym doesn’t post very much I didn’t have a good feel for what he might like. Which meant I had to look for inspiration in other places, and my well of inspiration has been very dry lately. I finally came up with one idea that I thought would be perfect only to have it dashed because there were no more PYO dragons. That was a huge let down as it was some thing that would not translate onto any of the other sculpts. So “back to the drawing board” I went. After several more days I finally was struck with the idea for the griffin I did and I was able to finish him in a few days time. If I had some small bit of “guidence” in the beginning it would have made things much easier.
Other than 6 weeks of art in junior high school I never took art classes as I had no aptitude for it. What little art I do is mostly sewing related.I’ve made a few costumes and done numerous counted cross-stitch patterns. Things where I have a pattern to follow, but I can change how it looks by varing the materials/colors used.

Thanks! I loved doing the blending on the side feathers…the back of the feathers didn’t blend quite as well though.

But if I tell you what I want, then it won’t be a surprise… and I like surprises. π The blending on the back feathers is just fine. You did a wonderful job!
November 17, 2008 at 5:56 am #739639Edit: Just realized this post seems a bit redundant. So pardon the rambling, guys.
Yep. Figuring out a good request seems difficult.
On one hand, something super specific could be tricky for the artist if it doesn’t play to their strengths. For example, I could paint decent hawk markings, but couldn’t pull off a graceful, consistent blending of colors to save my life. Another painter might have the exact opposite problem.
On the other hand, absolute free rein lets the artist play to their technical strengths, but adds the ‘Eeek! What would they like?’ angle for painters. Even if the requester simply and sincerely just wants a PYO that the artist had free rein with.
Something kind of between the two is probably a good way to go.
Edit: And this concludes my rambling.
November 17, 2008 at 6:18 am #739640Lovely griffin, Pegasi! It’s so neat to see what everyone’s gotten so far. The PYOs are just pouring in!
November 17, 2008 at 9:51 am #739641So many PYOs! Congrats, everyone π I need to peruse this thread later but they are looking great!
