Oh and Halloween/All Hallows eve is supposed to be “All Saints Night” And most of the dates we now celebrate Christian Holidays on were because the church couldn’t actually eliminate the old Pagan traditions so they just subverted them by saying “Oh you must be celebrating this holiday instead”. The phrase “I reject your reality and insert my own” comes to mind. 😀
So basically, we changed the dates to try and convince pagans to convert? I guess they did that with Christmas and Easter, why not that one too. Or they made up one to make it look like it was a Christian holiday anyway.
Now I’m really confused. *goes and hides in box*
And Snap, my roommate isn’t here. I think he’s scared of me. 😈
August 2, 2008 at 7:46 pm #726265AnonymousOh, and just to stir the water on the whole ‘left out’ issue? It happens. It does build character. The sooner a child learns to stand on their own two feet, the sooner they get off mom’s milk and make a go of it. If my kid was allergic to something, he’ll have to deal with it just like I am. Depriving his classmates of a treat or some fun activity is BS in my opinion.

Heck, up here if you have a problem with a kid, the punishment is to throw them out in the snow for a while to think about it.
Wait, what, me speak my mind? Never!

August 2, 2008 at 7:49 pm #726266A combination of that and the converts were still celebrating the old holidays so they had to trick them into “Giving them up” and celebrating only Christian holidays. Even St. Paddy’s and April Fools, though they technically had way too much trouble with April Fools and that one’s conversion essentially failed, but they succeed enough that it ended up seriously toned down, like man was that one wild!!! YAY for inane trivia you learn in University during Theology, Psychology, Philosophy, English and Comparative Lit classes. 😯
August 2, 2008 at 7:50 pm #726267If anyone cares to read more on the subject click here. If you click on most of the festival names, it gives you some info regarding how the festival relates to the Christian calender. I’m sure there are more thorough sites out there, this is just one of the ones I came across.

Yep. It was actually St. Patrick’s idea. The Pagans were the “snakes” he supposedly drove out of Ireland. Well, he didn’t drive them out. He converted them to Christianity.

Now to add a bit more confusion to the mix; 😈 the carvings in the cathedrals were often of a pagan nature, like the Green Men, the Pentagram, which is an expression the crucifix, showing 5 points. This form turns up in nature as the bottom of sand dollar sea shells and if you cut an apple in half crossways–the seeds and the husk that holds them form a 5 pointed star. The Christians incorporated the carvings into their churches for a couple of reasons. For one, they often built their churches on the sites of old Pagan celebration sites, and for another, they thought having familiar things would keep the pagans coming to the church, and that they would eventually convert. It worked to a point, but overall the majority of the Pagans and Druids went underground.

Yes, in person. Love it.
August 3, 2008 at 5:00 pm #726274Life does suck when you grow up. Especially when checks bounce and you are wondering why the bank let you withdraw money that you didn’t even have in the first place. It let me withdraw some of that bounced check before it bounced. WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
August 4, 2008 at 1:09 am #726275AnonymousWell.. the bank doesn’t know it bounced until it sent it for clearing.. so why wouldn’t they let you withdrawal your own money?
Unless you have a hold on deposits, then it’s usually fair game.
