Sorry, I disagree with that. Imagine if you are a 7 or 8 year old kid with food allergies and EVERY time someone in your class has a birthday you have to sit and watch everyone else chowing down on cake or cupcakes and you can’t eat any of it. How fun is that for that child? And although I agree the children need to know about their condition to make a 7 year old responsible for a potentially FATAL condition could well end in tragedy. Sure, the teacher could help but a lot of schools are over crowded and trying to keep an eye on 16 7 year olds every second is impossible. It’s much safer just to ban the food. Besides, if I was a teacher I wouldn’t want to deal with sugared up kids anyway! 😉

ive been in that boat many times through out my school career not being able to perticipate in certain partys or events in school because of health reasons , but it would be selfish of me to turn it into a problem and have the other kids lose out on thier fun. I dont feel its fair for every one to miss out because of one person or a small minority , to this day i still am unable to attend certain events that i would love to because of the environment or eat and drink different things but i cant imagine trying to accomidate myself at the cost of others enjoyment.

Halloween is actually a Christian holiday. Originally called All Hallows Eve. I forget what it’s for but my church celebrated it on occasion.

sorry dude its not Christian it Pagan . November 1st is all saints day or All-hallows

    History Channel
By the 800s, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands. In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 All Saints’ Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. It is widely believed today that the pope was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, but church-sanctioned holiday. The celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints’ Day) and the night before it, the night of Samhain, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween. Even later, in A.D. 1000, the church would make November 2 All Souls’ Day, a day to honor the dead. It was celebrated similarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades, and dressing up in costumes as saints, angels, and devils. Together, the three celebrations, the eve of All Saints’, All Saints’, and All Souls’, were called Hallowmas.

I’m with Necron on this one. It’s incredibly selfish and poor sportmanship, so to speak, to say “I can’t have it, so nobody else can either!”

It’s not difficult to make a special treat to send with your child if there’s going to be a party where they can’t eat cupcakes or the other treats that get offered.

Life, as someone’s signature on this board says, has a 100% mortality rate. We need to enjoy it instead of acting like jumpy little prey animals and banning everything instead of working out a much more desirable solution.

I’m afraid I gotta agree too. Due to health reasons, I too was unable to do many of the things my peers did. But, my ONLY fond memories of school were those special things we’d get to do (even if I didn’t get to have a cupcake like everyone else, I still had fun!). The Christmas, Easter, Halloween… etc, all those events and parties and fun stuff we did in school as kids- I didn’t think “Oh. Well this is religious, and I don’t agree with X_religion”. No, it was just time for FUN! THOSE are my fond memories… untainted fun. Even without childhood friends I still had a blast running about in costume or helping to decorate the tree at school.

Maybe I’m just an old fogey (at the age of 26) but it seems a lot less fun these days. I go in to help mom at the elementary school she works at these days sometimes (pretty much have to pass an FBI check just to get a visitor’s pass..!!) and it is a lot different than when I went..

Thank you. I’ve heard it way too many times in a derogatory manner (omg I spelled that right the first time!) so now it just annoys me (one of my many pet peeves). So thanks for the apology. All is forgiven. I figured I’d let you know it bothered me.

WOW well my son just finished grade 3 and they have christmas parties, easter celebrations, halloween parties, birthday parties, hell they have a party for everything, and I am glad. I think that if your child can not handle watching the others eat cupcakes keep them home, if they can, then there is lots more fun than the food. I do have to send peanut free treats, and I can deal with it, even though there is not one child with a peanut allergy in his school, but they get to have parties.

After reading all the allergies you guys have I feel pretty lucky since none of my family are allergic to anything, except certain laundry soaps, and one dog who is allergic to corn, although finding corn free food and be a PITA.

It’s not. That’s why we got with the school and teachers to be given advance notice of any food events so we could send our own cupcakes, cookies, pizza, or whatever. It didn’t always work out (sometimes the teacher would forget to tell us), and on those occasions our kids just learned what it’s like to be an outsider. This, as Calvin’s dad would say, “builds character”. So it’s all good.

But for the most part everything went OK. And when the birthday was for Miri or Ted we’d send them to school with enough allergen free cupcakes for everyone in the class (with the ingredients listed, entertainingly, on the box). This gave the other kids a chance to join in and realise that our kids were not total aliens. And it gave our kids the opportunity to be the centre of attention for a moment. Ted professed to not care, but Miri loved that part.

Miri is the one who, as a result of her food allergies, plans on opening her own restaurant that caters to people with allergies. Right now she is a Hibachi Chef at a Japanese restaurant, trying to earn enough money to put herself through college.

So having allergies can define your life, but it usually doesn’t have to be negatively.

I’m dreading not being able to send Khym to school with a PBJ, I mean what the *BEEP* else am I supposed to send my kid to school with for lunch? A Ham sandwich? That’s not a proper kids lunch sandwich, and they can go bad too quickly? Some times I think it’s a way for processed food makers/sellers to actually force us into buying their over priced “nutritional” (I believe falsely labeled) crap. But I do know some of those people who are seriously allergic, like a friend in High school who almost died because of her allergy to Peas(green) they knew it but she was originally allergic to ingestion, but then found out the hard way it turned into a “Steam”/air reaction. Also we found out that Green Noodles are made with Peas. Her poor father almost killed her for with that one. He thought they just used normal food colouring, not peas, but after she started having a reaction he read the ingredient list. 😯 😯 There’s one to be able to hold over your dad for the rest of his life!! The only time he never read a label…

Oh and I’m stupidly allergic to perfume, but you know what I only request that people not drown in it, or spray it inside confined spaces like buses and staff rooms with no ventilation or inside an internet cafe when there’s a door 6 feet away from you!!! 👿 👿 👿 Yes it’s nice when they realize they smell, and try to remedy such, but inside is not a good idea. I really really hate Pneumonia.

Oh and Halloween/All Hallows eve is supposed to be “All Saints Night” And most of the dates we now celebrate Christian Holidays on were because the church couldn’t actually eliminate the old Pagan traditions so they just subverted them by saying “Oh you must be celebrating this holiday instead”. The phrase “I reject your reality and insert my own” comes to mind. 😀
