I bought a young uni a couple months back off of Ebay. Much to my dismay, when he arrived, I noticed that his horn is bent quite obviously. It didn’t show in the angle of the pictures and the seller didn’t find it necessary to inform me either 🙄
Is there anyway to fix the horn? Is it solid metal? Can it be heated up and bent maybe 1/4″ in the opposite direction? He’s such a beautiful piece but the horn takes a lot away from him.
Any help would be appreciated!
December 18, 2006 at 5:15 pm #517680The horns are made of gold-plated pewter, so yes, it is solid metal. I’m not sure of the best method of working pewter; it’s not something I’ve done before. You might want to ask Melody or someone else at the Factory that has some experience. Or perhaps someone here has worked with pewter before and can offer better advice! 🙂
Pewter is fairly soft… If it were mine, I’d heavily pad a pair of pliers with some soft cloth (fleece, a car-shammy, or something gentle and not abrasive) and gently work it back to where it needs to be- I’d be sure to grip and steady it -above- the base of the horn though with another pair of padded pliers- last thing you’d want is to break it off of the unicorn’s head! They are only glued in, with a peg of the metal extending down into the head. If you put too much stress on the base it could crack right out of the gypsum and leave you heartbroken over your poor unicorn’s broken head! D:

My art: featherdust.comDecember 18, 2006 at 6:09 pm #517681I had a friend that got one like that….and I fixed it for here…bending it back was easy….but the gold flaked off of course….
so matching the gold was hard….3 diff types of gold leaf later….it looked quite good again…
December 18, 2006 at 7:27 pm #517682Good luck for sure when it comes to bending the horn back. When I got my black uni male in the mail his horn was bent funny. It wasn’t the horn that got bent but the peg that sticks into the head.
I pulled it out, cleaned all the glue off, used pliers to bend it back into place (praying I didn’t break it off the entire time) and then put it back in the hole. Great thing is the peg and the hole are shaped a certain way and the horn only goes in one way.
I haven’t glued it back into place though because I wasn’t sure what to use, but fortunately it sits very nicely and when I pack him up when we move years from now I can take his horn off and put it in the box he was shipped to me (not an original) with him.
March 31, 2016 at 11:05 pm #943749I’m resurrecting this thread to see if anyone else has dealt with this since and had good results. I have a grand with a bent horn who will be on his way to me soon. I’m likely to try Jennifer’s method here, but I thought I’d see if anyone else had any input before I did! Thanks.
