In the beginning, I started drilling out the FooPs head scales and setting in crystals…there was some trepidation among some members, but the trend persisted. I personally prefer to make such modifications to make sure my pieces stand out, and are unique. I did contact John and Melody waay back about this, and they were fine with it, so long as you are not changing the foundation of the original design.

    Have at it! ^_^

Yeah, a lot of it is finding a way to make my pieces unique. I was actually considering doing this with all of my dragons. For example, red dragons might have garnet or ruby cabs, orange and yellow ones might have citrine or lemon quartz, and so on.

I was also thinking of casting clear resin horns for an ice-themed dragon. From what I’ve gathered, I still think that would be okay, since it would essentially look the same, but translucent.

Thanks for the info, everyone! I have yet to order my dragon yet (debating on a good eye color) but I’m eyeballing moonstone cab lots on ebay. I’m excited about this girl already.

Do any of you guys ever use pictures of blank PYOs to block out coloring ideas?

I have done this before. Just once, for my first PYO keeper. Now I use that black and white drawing of an emperor from Quest 7 to try and get my ideas down.

          Hey!
I was actually going to do just that! I feel it helps, and was going to photograph my blank PYO Dragon and Foo Dog when they come in, and print out the photos on paper (probably several sheets for mistakes or future designs).

Then I’ll use colored pencils to work out design schemes and colors. When I do loom beading work, mapping out a design and colors in a way I want to use them really does help put together the design (and count how beads are placed on the rows – essential in loom beading).

          Good Luck! 🙂

I joked about sanding all the sculpted hair off the pyo unicorn and replacing it with real hair… I think that crosses the line of “altering”. I think adding jewels and stuff is fairly common but it’s kind of interesting to see more “custom” pyo’s. 🙂
