So I am thinking up a few color schemes for PYOs I’d like to paint in the future, and one of them is a moonstone-themed dragon. My question, I guess, is this: would it be frowned upon if I drilled out a few of the small, pebbly scales and replaced them with inlaid tiny round and oval-shaped moonstone cabochons.
Is it heresy? Will the mob come for me? It wouldn’t be compromising the integrity of the sculpture as a whole, and ideally wouldn’t be super noticeable on the finished product. I just thought it would be a unique way to add a little extra oomph, but I know there are certain things Windstone doesn’t like done to their sculptures and I want to be mindful of them.
June 26, 2013 at 3:00 pm #899030Never!! 😀 Kidding.I personally would love to see a new twist on the dragons.Your Muse moves you in that direction? Then by all means,go with it!Your dragons are just that, yours.Post some pics when you can. 🙂

June 26, 2013 at 3:17 pm #899032Kirin would drill holes to insert wings on some of the PYO kirins and unicorns; you’re decorating, not modifying the statue.
I think you’re safe from the mob 🙂
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

It doesn’t sound to me like this should be a problem, but I’m always fuzzy on modification stuffs.
June 26, 2013 at 4:38 pm #899036I modified a PYO wolf to look like the wolf from Okami. I added little whispy things to the shoulders. Also, I know a few other forum members have drilled out the foreheads on th ebaby foo dogs and replaced the emblem with a crystal and it didn’t seem too taboo or anything.

I think it is adding to the sculpt your own touch and not taking away or altering the fact that it is a Windstone Sculpture. Just my thoughts.
June 26, 2013 at 5:58 pm #899040Thanks for the info, everyone! I have yet to order my dragon yet (debating on a good eye color) but I’m eyeballing moonstone cab lots on ebay. I’m excited about this girl already.
Do any of you guys ever use pictures of blank PYOs to block out coloring ideas?

People add things like fairy wings to pieces, such as the kirins, and haven’t gotten attacked, so it will probably be safe to set stones into them.
I’ve done that.
I was actually going to recommend that people carve open the inner part of the curls on the Foo-dogs so jewels fit in them better. I should of sculpted the pyos with more places to set jewels in the first place.
We would strongly discourage taking a pyo and say, sculpting a different head onto it, but I don’t see how adding more jewels would be a problem!June 26, 2013 at 7:36 pm #899042..drilled out a few of the small, pebbly scales and replaced them with inlaid tiny round and oval-shaped moonstone cabochons..
Just wanted to say, this sounds like a great idea! Please, will you post pics of your piece when it is finished? I LOVE moonstones (especially rainbow moonstones!) and I’d love to see how this looks 🙂

Please visit My Webpage to see my art and PYO's that I've done in the past!June 26, 2013 at 9:06 pm #899048Thank you, Melody! Sweet! This is gonna be a shiny dragon. Think I’ll name her Princess Sparklebutt. And no, I wouldn’t dream of sculpting a different head or anything like that. They already have such cute little faces; who would want to change that?
Hannah, I will absolutely post pictures of it when I’m done! Process pics, too, probably. You will be sick of me by the time I’m done. Right now I’m stalking ebay for some moonstone cabs. I’ve found a glorious one that is a clear, full rainbow, but 6x5mm is kind of big for a scale, I think, and I dunno what would be a good size for a forehead gem. Probably smaller than that. Maybe I could have her hold it somehow.
The other ones I’m looking at are all smaller, ranging from 2.5-4mm in round and oval shapes.
The smaller ones come in lots. Depending on how many I get, I might even have enough to make more than one dragon.
June 27, 2013 at 8:59 am #899086As it happens, Keeper dragons actually have a hole in their claws so they can hold onto a trinket of some sort, so all you’d have to do is provide a setting for that lovely gem and she could watch over it for you 😉
June 27, 2013 at 10:34 am #899087Sounds like a cool idea! I still have yet to paint my pyo dragons and unicorns I bought a little while ago but I am thinking it might be good to print or draw a picture of the piece on a blank paper and then try different colours on paper to what what colour schemes would look best.
Looking for rainbow or pink & teal grab bags!
June 27, 2013 at 2:58 pm #899091Amy Jane, that looks great! I just wish there were a way for her to hold a cabochon or a sphere, but finding a nice moonstone pendant won’t be hard. I like the gold on her claws, too. What kind of paint is that?
Kim, you’re lucky you got some unicorns. I’m so late to the game, I wish I’d gotten a few before they went out of stock. :[ But yeah, definitely planning in advance. I’ve been writing out my ideas so far, but haven’t started mocking up anything yet.
June 27, 2013 at 6:01 pm #899101I can’t wait to see what you come up with Lady Sif, those moonstones are very pretty!
