Do you buy them that way, or are you all master paint mixers? I’m using mostly Golden and having a hard time getting just the right colors. Ofcourse, my Michaels has about 15 colors of the fluid acrylics. They have alot more of the Liquitex paints, but I really like the Goldens….
February 10, 2007 at 1:49 pm #537769Most I buy just like that, some I mix. I use the FolkArt and they have a really wide range of colors. If when I start I don’t have the right shade, then I mix.
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

http://www.sarahjestin.com/feedbacklists.htmFebruary 10, 2007 at 2:03 pm #537770I do about half and half- some I mix myself and some I use outright– a tip is to pick two main colors and then use those colors to mix your other hughes– mix in other colors til you find one you like– since one of the colors was the base they *should* compliment eachother.

ps wait til the craft store is having a sale on paint– and everytime you go in check for clearance stuff– I just bought a bunch of metalic for like $.50 a bottle on clearance.February 10, 2007 at 5:23 pm #537771I mix all of my paints. My art teacher drilled that into my head back in school. She said my color palette was an extension of myself and my style, and never to use paint straight out of a tube. I dunno if she’s right or not, but the practice stuck!

My art: featherdust.comFebruary 10, 2007 at 9:04 pm #537772Mostly I use Mom’s “old” acrylics. Most of them I mix to get a wider variety of colors without having to buy new tubes of paint.
February 10, 2007 at 10:51 pm #537773I use Golden, Liquitex, Folk Art, and Delta Cermacoat for the most part. I also use Appel Barrel when I can’t find certain colors but the Appel Barrel takes a lot of layers to lay down and never looks quite as solid as the others.
I admit I rarely mix paints, especially with Goldens since I don’t want to waste that expensive paint and when I mix, I always mix way more than I need…better to have it left over than have to mix again and be sorry for it later.
I’m more of a buy-the color tube, type person.
February 10, 2007 at 10:55 pm #537774I tried golden….but Michael’s paints are all old and most of them just peeled right off…so I’ve gone back to Duncan…acrylics, mostly gotten from ceramic stores…
and then some of the craft acrylics from Hobby Lobby…but most of the stuff I paint with are Duncan…and then Golden interference
February 10, 2007 at 11:08 pm #537775I’ve never run into this “old paint” syndrome most of you speak of. I have bought most of my paints, save for the Golden brand, at Hobby Lobby or Michaels. The Goldens I bought from Dick Blick. Although whenever I buy a paint I really eyeball it to make sure there’s no color separation or crakiness in the paint. Really good shakes have cleared up any problem’s I’ve run into. Maybe my stores stock better?
February 11, 2007 at 2:02 am #537776Well, that just confirms for me I need to find somewhere that carries more Golden colors. I was looking today at Michaels in the craft paint section and alot of them were seperating and old looking. Not so with the Goldens they do carry, must be quick turn over.
*sigh* Guess it’s time to send hubby on another wild goose chase in Boston for me! 😆
February 11, 2007 at 2:13 am #537777I really don’t like buying paint from Micheals. I always find that they don’t have much selection. Strange for a store that size. And the people that work there seem to be quite cranky.
I brought my PYO with me the last time I was there and the cashier had a little temper tantrum over it. She thought I was stealing one of theirs. A mostly painted dragon stollen? Whatever. Maybe she was just having a bad day or something. She just had a little tiff with me a guess. I only had $25 on me and I had to buy some brushes and some other things. So I wanted a total before she rang in the one brush. She gave me such a hard time. From now on I will go to art schools. There is one in Guelph, I love it. The paints are excellent. Always a huge selection, and the best customer service around. Only thing is it costs so much to get there.
February 11, 2007 at 4:34 am #537778I love to mix. I don’t always mix, but I like the way they come out once in a while and try to make a larger batch in the same tone, or close to it. But my art teacher also taught the magic of mixing. He was ok with the out of the tube paint, but if you mixed he would up the grade a whole letter, so mix I did, and still do. Just happened my first PYO was black and white, my second mostly black, but the next one will be more fun I promise!! 😆
February 12, 2007 at 11:00 am #537779I dont mix, but thats only because paint comes in so many colors that I can pretty much always find one I want. If I mix, there is always the worry that I cant match it later, if I need to touch it up, or something.
February 12, 2007 at 2:27 pm #537780I mostly mix my colors but I like using some out of the bottle as well- and I use metallic pearl to metallicize matte paint. I use folk art and golden but can’t blend worth a d**n.
February 12, 2007 at 5:02 pm #537781Folk art does have some very pretty colors. Especialy the metallics. I still don’t have any interference paints though. 😕
