We could always do a poll…have one person who isn’t participating post all the pictures without names attached and then everyone votes for thier favorite? Or their top three in order (first gets 3 points, second gets 2 points and third gets 1) winner is picture with most points.

That sounds like a pretty good idea, good one Pegasi!

We do something similar in the livejournal “The Last Unicorn” icon contest community that I help run.

Actually what I had in mind was a photo cotest , using any grade of photographic equipment, with “wildlife” as the subject. For the purpose of this contest, I would define “Wildlife”; as any species not usually cosidered to be a domesticated
animal, such as house pets or farm animals or enburdened working animals. But on the otherhand if you keep normally wild species around your place or have a friend that does, then that would count as wildlife. ( do I hear a stampede of rubber soled feet moving in the direction of Melody’s yard?)
Birds, shore birds, fish, racoons in the trash, one of our wildlife artists began his work using photos taken at various zoos. Zoo animals count, almost everybody that doesn’t have wildlife habatat available, should be able to get to a zoo.
Actually this whole thing started with that very thought. The song, “At the zoo”, by Simon & Garfunckle was actually the trigger for this whole idea. It’s your contest you all can figure it out.
Though I wouldn’t mind if we took that root, if everybody can do a zoo trip easily.
        Oh , I almost forgot;…..motivation.

Where do we post the photos? In this thread? Another thread?

Art Slinger I realize you were talking about running a wildlife photo contest. I wasn’t trying to change what the contest was at all.

People were just asking how the winning image was going to be picked and I gave an example of how we pick the winning icons each week in an icon contest community I help run as a possible option.

I can see that I’m not as sure of how to go ,as I originally thought,so I can use some insight.
I chkd the site page you linked up above and I see a contest going on. I was under the impression that we had such capabilities here on this site, but i’ve not really chkd that out. If we can post a long string of shots,# them without names, as was just recently suggested. Then couldn’t we log in to the poll and vote a number? I realize that there are quite a few members of this site, so that in it’s self makes things more ponderous than I’m used to.
How about we Poll to see what people want to photo.
Maybe , “The best of Anything”, should be the theme, but having such a wide field of subject matter will probably dilute and further confuse the judgements.——-We’ll get it together.
Can you start a poll to see who’s feeling which way about it? I don’t even know how. It would be a huge help, since you have a handle on those things.

I’m not really sure how to post a poll in this forum. I’ve never done it before but I seem to remember that if you want to do a poll you have to start a new topic…you can’t add a poll to an exsisting topic.

As for the community I linked to we have weekly icon contests. Livejournal gives you an option to screen comments (so they are private or only available to the one who posted the comment and the community moderator) so when icons are submitted no one sees them until the poll and when the poll goes up no one is influenced by anyone else’s vote. . I think the closest thing on this forum would be the PM – private message.

First I suggest that we pick a mediator, someone that will collect all the photos by a certain date and time (say a week to get your pictures into this person). Then the photos will be posted with numbers and a poll that would include all the numbers. People would then have a certain amount of time (say 5 days) to vote. The number with the most votes is the winner and would then have his or her name disclosed and claim the prize. Did I miss anything?

If we really go through with this, I offer to be the mediator, unless someone else wants to. My photography isn’t worth beans. 🙂

Who’s supposed to offer up the prizes?

I beleive it was Art Slinger, but don’t quote me on that.

Art Slinger suggested a retired Windstone but did not get a confirmation on that. I woudl say that Chessie or Vantid that would collect the picture all turned in by a specific date. they then post them in a topic and we would PM the votes to them and give a dead line. Once the dead line is up that is the winner. I like the 1-3 point idea

Well then, you have my vote, but your photography can’t be that bad;..even if it is, you can improve.
But yes I’m reasonably sure you would do a good job as mediator, Thanks.

I can photograph inanimate objects, but wildlife isn’t so great. I’ll practice though, for the next round! 😀
