This is a bit older so some of you may have already seen it, but I found it again the other day and it’s still crazy interesting.

Maybe this is a clue as to why we all seem to have such differing tastes on color schemes we love! In addition to our instinctive human responses to colors, and individual emotional responses, our language and vocabulary seems to come into play as well.

This is an extreme example, but it shows how differently we can perceive color depending on the environment in which we are raised.

      How language affects color perception

That is really interesting! No wonder why my hubby only sees white, red, blue, green, grey and brown – he grew up in farm territory and had parents that only used those terms, while I, on the other hand, know what cyan, magenta, chartruese, etc. are – dad designed lighting and sets for stage and my mum was a home ec. major and in interior design and decorating. She and my auntie had a children’s clothing business as well and we kids were always in the cutting room, etc. That’s a great article!

          Interesting….
Though I grew up with parents who use basic colour terms (red, blue, green etc) but I use a whole other slew of color terms. All of us kids (4 of us) use other color terms, but I by far have the widest variety. I can provoke quite the reaction when I correct my mum who thinks all blues are either light, regular or dark, when I call something ‘blue’ Midnight, teal, cyan, cerulean, etc 😀

Roddy has trouble in discerning different shades of white – I can bring scads of paint chips home, all white by title and he’ll say there’s not a white one in the bunch *silly engineer way of thinking…* poor Roddy *sigh*
