In Switzerland, you have to pay for stickers that go on your trash bags – the bigger the bag, the more stickers it needs before it’s picked up. That was introduced about 10 years ago, and since then, the trash produced has dropped. I think it’s a great system.

When they get stuck in traffic, too, they turn off the cars on the highway and get out and visit with eachother.
That would probably be much healthier than sitting in your car getting frustrated & mad! I mean, why do some people honk when you’re stuck in traffic?Americans are soooo wasteful, it’s true. I’m horrified at the amount of water we waste (and I live in a desert where people have sprinklers on during the day so their grass stays green) and what we don’t recycle. We save up stuff for months before we take it in to be recycled, and I’m glad we have a trash service now, ’cause the trip to the dump was always a drag, and it cost money. Which means a lot of people go out to the forest or mesa and just dump their trash, which sucks. Often they will have prescription bottles and mail in there with their name and address (duh!), but the laws are so flimsy here that it often doesn’t even make a difference unless someone saw them dumping.
I read once that one European country (more than one?) actually charges people for the amount of trash they throw away, and that they actually recycle like 90% of what we would be throwing away. Anyone know what country and what the actual numbers are?As for eating healthier, I never paid too much attention until I was pregnant with my first child, and then I was really good for awhile, and now I think we’re eating healthier than many, but not like we were. One thing that I found though, if you’re willing to make your own breads & rolls: King Arthur white whole wheat flour, which is a lighter flavored whole wheat. I even use it in pancakes, tortillas, and some cookies. (There are some things that really just need to be unhealthy, like eclairs, cause wheat flour makes ’em suck.) It seems small, but the amount of bread we consume in our house makes it worthwhile.
I agree that it would be much healthier for you if you get out the car and talk to each other then getting mad and honking your horn.August 3, 2007 at 9:46 pm #604697Greater Basilisk wrote:In Switzerland, you have to pay for stickers that go on your trash bags – the bigger the bag, the more stickers it needs before it’s picked up. I assume there is less trash produced because more is recycled??? 😕

The area I lived with my parents (in the northeast US) was like this too. The more trash you put out, the more it costs you. This is on top of the normal trash pick up fees. I know, because I was always sent to the store as a child to buy a “trash sticker” every week or so. 😉

Partly, though I think the Swiss have always been good at recycling. It’s just that people will think twice about throwing something away if it hits where it hurts most – the wallet. Our family of seven gets by on one 35L trash bag a week. Now how’s that for conservation?
August 6, 2007 at 5:10 pm #604700That is awesome! In Vienna, we went to Zoom (A childrens museum) and went to an interactive area that told all about energy and recycling. The kids got to separate trash and everything. They had a great time… I was quite bored. 😆

Now that is a interesting idea. Having fun while sorting trash. 😆

August 7, 2007 at 7:52 am #604705It was nothing I didnt already know, though one thing was put in perspective. They had a little grocery store and you could pick out 8 things to “buy.” When you checked out, it rang up how many kilometers that particular food had to travel to get to you. It was pretty cool. Kiwi was the furthest away. I had never really thought about it before.
August 7, 2007 at 3:40 pm #604706That’s a good thing to keep in mind. 😉
Back to the original subject – How am I? Exhausted. I had to leave Wolfen’s this morning around 0400, so she and I just stayed up the night and talked and watched movies. I so didn’t want to leave Texas, but there was no getting around it. Now I’m with family in Colorado, getting ready to head to a county fair, and it’s not even 1000. Most likely I’ll sleep in the car. I barely dozed on the plane. 😕
August 7, 2007 at 5:00 pm #604707😆 Poor GB being run ragged! I hope you enjoy the day regardless. I am very glad you had a nice time with Wolfen 😀
August 7, 2007 at 5:48 pm #604708So it sounds like you didn’t get to stay longer with Wolfen then?
August 8, 2007 at 3:42 pm #604709I did! I extended my stay in Texas by two weeks. And I’m awfully glad I did. I would have missed so much if I hadn’t. But I’m still wishing I’d known what was waiting for me in Texas before I booked all my flights. I’d have skipped Colorado and chopped a week or more off Michigan and spent the time in Texas if I’d known.
