The good side of this? You might be the last straw that HR needs to get rid of this guy. If he’s making others cry as well as making sexist comments, then they should be firing him. You have the personality to follow this through, which unfortunately, in a lot of cases like these, a lot of people don’t and managers like him continue to harass employees. So you hang in there, ok?

January 22, 2010 at 2:16 pm #802967Drag0n, I agree with Tas… Document everything!! There are laws in place to prevent workplace harassment. The sexist comment alone would be enough to get him fired in my organization. If there’s ONE good thing about the company I work for, it’s they don’t tolerate things like this (basically, because the company could get sued…LOL). These aren’t random company policies, this is the law we are talking about.

January 22, 2010 at 3:03 pm #802968Eep! GB said it right when she said “Out of the frying pan into the fire”. I also agree with documenting everything that he says to you. I would say have a mini-tape recorder handy, but I don’t know what the laws on that are in your state.

I’m not tolerating this kind of treatment, I’m one of the best people they have in that place and they know it! I have to speak with someone at noon so I’m trying to take notes so I don’t forget anything to say.

Check the laws in your state before you do. At best you could probably put a tape recorder out on the desk where he can see it, but he might behave differently if you did.
I agree that you need to document everything, ask the other girl he tore into to document as well, and your witness in the office when he started screaming at you. This is inappropriate behavior for anyone, let alone a manager, and a comment like ‘I shouldn’t have asked a woman to do it” can constitute sexual harassment.
I hope HR takes you seriously in your meeting.
January 22, 2010 at 4:09 pm #802971Yea, I don’t think I can tape record anyone, but the notebook is a really good idea. He’s been in trouble a lot lately and I think that’s what he is so on edge. Last week we had a patron collapse in the store and stop breathing a few times. POLICY is to call a manager and they THEY are supposed to decide what to do in emergencies like that. Well, this guy was the manager on and one of my coworkers was the one who was with the gentlemen when he collapsed in the aisle. He paged for a manager like 4 or 5 times and never got an answer so a manager on lunch and heard the pages finally responded and asked what the problem was, but at that point our Service Desk already called an ambulance. Well, when this @sshole manager finally got around to the scene like 10 minutes or so later he tried to write up my coworker for directing to tell the Service Desk to call an ambulance. He said it’s not his call to make an he needs manager approval and he should have waited. NOW we were going to have to pay a $1200 ambulance bill instead of the customer.
He later held a meeting with all the people involved and said if that ever happens again, no matter what condition the customer is in, you use someones cell phone or ask the customer if he has a cell phone and use that so we don’t have to pay the bill because it comes out of our sales percentage for the day if we have to pay a bill like that. Now we were behind for the week because of my coworker having the Service Desk call from a Home Depot line and because of him we’re going to miss our planned dollars.
I later heard all about this from my coworker and he reported him to out aware line (an anonymous report line) for saying all that because, I’m sorry, if a guy STOPS BREATHING YOU CALL A FU#%ING AMBULANCE no matter who has to foot the bill! What if that was your father or your brother? If a manager doesn’t respond you have to use your best judgment and when a guy stops breathing, my judgment is to call an ambulance!
He’s been now treating my coworker like gold because of the report. If he retaliates to the complaint he WILL LOOSE HIS JOB. The Depot is pretty strict about that. It’s pretty sad those measures will need to be resorted to to out a choke collar on this butt hole!

January 22, 2010 at 8:17 pm #802975He definitely is sexist! I got the feeling that he was saying those things because you are a female, and then when you noted his comments to the Dept. head, then I really knew that he was having a male ego problem.
I agree with what was said about writing everything down including witnesses and the dates/times. I hope HE gets fired! I don’t think I’ve had anyone make me cry at work (well a customer did – but that’s because I WATCHED HIM STEAL SOMETHING and called him out on it…. but that’s a different story).
Definitely document everything, this guy is a sexist and needs to be put in his place, whether by the HR department, you, or the law itself. 👿
I would have probably punched him in the face though….. 😳 *whistles*
And how he handled a guy not breathing, well that was all cow poop. 😡 I’d call an ambulance no matter WHO had to foot the bloody bill.

What’s up with that–that guy could have died because they couldn’t find his sorry arse and someone else had to come–meanwhile, if that guy died then what???!!!
They really need to get rid of this jerk–that’s putting someone’s life in jepordy because of his stupid ego trip! And I thought that I worked with morons!!!! 👿
