I got a little ice cream maker for my birthday and so far I’ve made carrot-peach frozen yogurt and 2 batches of vanilla ice cream with it. I love this thing! Nothing beats homemade ice cream :yum:
I was curious as to how it compares to purchasing pre-made ice cream at the store so I calculated how much it costs to make a quart of ice cream with this ice cream maker, versus purchasing a pint of gourmet ice cream like Haagen-Dazs or Ben and Jerry’s.
1 egg: .20
1 c half-and-half: .62
1 c whole milk: .12
1/3 c sugar: .09
TOTAL: $1.01 per quart (vanilla extract was free–I made it myself with vanilla beans and brandy a while back)Compare that at $7.98 a quart of gourmet ice cream–Haagen-Dazs and Ben & Jerry’s are always about $3.99 a pint here. Sometimes you can get two for $5. Which means this little ice cream maker pays for itself in the savings after just 5-8 uses. I compared my ice cream to the premium brands because the same good whole ingredients go in with no gelatin fillers and artificial flavoring. But if you compare it to the regular ice cream, usually about $3.50 for a half gallon, you still save $.65 per quart–and get a superior product.
….and Wal-Mart says THEIR ice cream is cheap!
September 10, 2009 at 7:01 pm #782992I might have to check this out. I have an ice cream maker somewhere in my garage but you have to have the ice and rock salt. Sounded like a big hassel so I’ve never used it. But this one looks like you don’t need all that–of course I can polish off a quart in no time flat! Just give me a few minutes and a spoon! :spank: XD
September 10, 2009 at 7:08 pm #782993There’s a chain in the Midwest called Sheridan’s. Their specialty is frozen custard, with the most exquisitely delicious mixins evaaar! It’s totally addicting. I usually get the chocolate concrete, with hot fudge, marshmallow cream and crushed graham cracker. It’s probably a good thing I don’t have a frozen custard maker. Mmmmmmm NOM NOM NOM! 😛
September 10, 2009 at 8:35 pm #782994MMMM! I don’t believe I’ve ever had frozen custard. I think the closest thing to Sheridan’s out here is Cold Stone Creamery. I think they’re national though… There are a few places that specialize in gelato near me… now that is a very tasty ice cream. Recommendo.
They say that laws and sausages are things that civilians would prefer not to see made. I think I need to add ice cream to the list. Now that I’ve assembled the product myself, I believe that stupid label when it says “170 calories in a 1/2 cup”!!! Didn’t stop me from using the rest of the base I’d made to prepare another batch of ice cream. Organic strawberry!
😆 I got way too carried away with making several batches of the base to try making different flavors (lavender-ginger infused vanilla ftw), and totally forgot my sister and I are leaving for San Francisco tonight. Now our mission, should we choose to accept it (we will), is to eat 2 quarts of ice cream before we leave…homemade ice cream doesn’t keep quite the same in the freezer. Oops.
September 10, 2009 at 8:48 pm #782995Coldstone is another one of my weaknesses, definitely! I hate when I get on those kicks where I have to have one several times a week for an undisclosed amount of time! 😀
Mmmm, these flavors you have made sound amazing! Lavender-ginger infused vanilla sounds magical. Must try! Good luck with your ice cream eating mission. Try to resist eating yummies with it such as angel food cake or hot fudge or something evil like that. Speaking of which, I’m sitting here snacking on the one thing I shouldn’t have in front of me right now LOL Chocolate peanut butter covered pretzels from World Market! Ahhh 😀

I did that with Twix bars about a month ago–I had to have one or two EVERY DAY. Now when I look at a Twix in the checkout aisle I’m almost grossed out…I guess my body’s caramel and cookie deficiency has been taken care of O_o
September 10, 2009 at 9:38 pm #782997LOL!! I do that with blueberry bagels. I’d eat them every morning for several weeks, then at some point (don’t really know when cuz it just kinda happens), I’ll look at one and feel nausiated. 😀

September 28, 2009 at 4:25 am #782998That sounds delicious! It has been many years since I have had home-made icecream!! After reading the reviews, I wanted to ask you: do all ice cream makers create a more liquid form, but then you place it in the freezer for an ice cream consistency, or is it just this one?
September 29, 2009 at 1:52 am #782999Hmm… I’ll have to get my recipe out for ice cream. Doesn’t take an egg, but I substitute in Mimic Cream for the milk/cream ingredients (since I can’t have either). Mimic Cream is made from nuts (almonds in particular), so as long as you don’t have a nut allergy… I can’t just go to the store a block away and buy ice cream 😥 (Stewart’s… their milk is rated the best in NYS for the last few years and doesn’t have hormones in it either – w00t w00t 8) … and their headquarters is 25ish minutes from my house).
