But I’d love to see a hippocampus too. I think it would look awesome if it was rearing up like the Ki-Rin, except bent farther back with a wilder mane, and the tail curled around as support like shown in Melody’s drawings…maybe with an open mouth.the sounds like it would look like it’s in pain…..LOL
but I get you

Ditto….
airbrushing is great and all but this one looks a bit dull to me….
and what about detail in the scales….
I normally like things that are airbrushed because of the softness and blending that can be achieved, but I have to agree, this one is not a favorite. I don’t know this artist, but from all I see posted she is apparently very good.
Is it just me, but from the photos it kinda looks unfinished? I guess I’m comparing it to what forum members have done, and especially with the belly and the scales, so much more could have been colored, accented, etc. I got the impression that the artist lost interest half-way through the project and decided to stop. I think its great some members really like it, and besides, art is so subjective, I don’t always like what is popular. I hope it sells well because it will help when forum members post their PYOs, but for this piece, I would want more for $200.
January 4, 2007 at 11:51 pm #522400Heather is good but she’s not one of the best.
January 5, 2007 at 12:30 am #522401🙁 I hope she doesn’t read this! Not a great ego boost to a proffessional artist when other PYOs are going for much more than $200…
I agree with most of the comments though. In my opinion, she definitely should have done SOMETHING with the scales. Even if it was just to antique them. The zebra idea is pretty neat though!
I for one don’t know how much a kirin is going to appeal to a lot of model horse collectors…same family of animal, maybe, but pretty darn alien compared to a horse!"He that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom."
-J R R TolkienJanuary 5, 2007 at 2:11 am #522402I think the thing that’s bugging me about this is that zebras have very crisp, sharp-edged stripes, and so to me the soft, air-brushed look just isn’t right.
I mean… it’s very pretty, but it doesn’t really look much like a zebra to me.
January 5, 2007 at 5:01 am #522403Three days left to go and still no bid on it. I doubt there’ll be a fight for it.
January 5, 2007 at 5:23 am #522404Probably not too much. Her previous pink young dragon auction had two bidders…one bid a few hours before the end and the winner sniped…

Hehe, what bugs you about the piece is the part I like best!
I like that the artist airbrushed the stripes because sharp-edged stripes on this Kirin would probably remind me of the detailing on a motorcycle. Also, I interpret the pattern as being inpired by a Zebra, not that the artist was literally trying to copy one so the soft edges are acceptable to me. Plus, the softened Zebra stripes makes the paint job feel more surreal and magical to me.
However, I agree with some of the forum members that it looks unfinished. That’s driving me a bit nuts. Still, overall, I think it is rather nice looking. Like I wish for everyone’s PYOs, I hope it does well on Ebay.
January 5, 2007 at 5:33 am #522406The soft black stripes are the prettiest part of the kirin. But the unfinished middle section makes me think she did the horsey part and didn’t have a clue what to do with the fish, so she just left it.

That’s what I thought too…
January 5, 2007 at 3:28 pm #522408It is pretty but I don’t like that she painted the horn myself.
While hiding somewhere in my head I'm on the lookout for white oriental dragons! Please let me know if you know of any available. Thank you!
January 5, 2007 at 3:35 pm #522409Good eyes, Keppy. I didn’t even notice that. I like the horn’s color scheme, though. I think it matches. But, because she painted it, the gold hooves don’t match anything anymore.
January 5, 2007 at 3:36 pm #522410I liked the painted horn, myself. I thought it blended really well, and she did leave some gold.
January 5, 2007 at 3:38 pm #522411Not enough to tie in with the hooves. And the blue “magickal” scales on the tail don’t match anything either unless some blue interference isn’t showing up on the pics.
January 5, 2007 at 5:25 pm #522412Hmm…I didn’t even notice that or that the horn had been painted. I just noticed that she did paint the hooves though, so it kind of ties in with the horn.
