Too pricey for me, but WOW! How lovely!! Cheryl, you are familiar with this artist in the horse world, right?? I think you have mentioned Heather Tarr before.
Awwww… I want it… 😥
Im not too fond of airbrush but this one looks nice!January 2, 2007 at 11:32 am #522355That looks pretty killer. Excellent theme. It’s mostly done in airbrush, you can tell. I am looking into getting an airbrush of my own to get that smooth. But what makes me the most thrilled about this auction is that a professional horse painter has gotten ahold of a Windstone and now the ball has gotten rolling along that end of the artistic spectrum…so Windstones are getting out there more!
January 2, 2007 at 11:42 am #522356I am really glad this has made a step into the model horse world! Folks who buy her horses are sure to want her Ki rin!
I really think I like the hand painted stuff better. I have seen both, and while some effects are totally better done by air brush, to me it looks more cloudy, thin, and its hard to stay in the lines…I cannot see model horses being done by hand, though. For that, I would def say airbrush would be the way to go. And I do love the looks on this Kirin. Maybe I just need to see it in person!January 2, 2007 at 12:16 pm #522357The thing about airbrush is that it can be faster…at least to apply a smooth base. But yes, it’s much thinner and in order to work with small, tight areas you almost have to mask out what you don’t want getting certain paint colors on…which is a big hastle and the main reason I haven’t invested yet in an airbrush. But, when both airbrush and hand detailing are applie you can get killer results. I’d have liked to have seen more hand-work on the Ki-Rin, especially seeing as how the tail scales are cool colors but the rest of the scales are just white. If the belly was the same as the tail scales I think it would look 10 times more awesome, but I understand the zebra thing and wanting to keep it white.
January 2, 2007 at 1:18 pm #522358Yeah… Too bland for me. I don’t think it was very smart of the sellers to start it off so high. Do you think it’ll sell?

I think so. She is famous in the model horse world. I know Cheryl has mentioned her before. I even thought about getting it, but $200 is too costly for me right now and im not a huge fan of airbrushing.
January 2, 2007 at 1:32 pm #522360I think it will sell, hands down. I don’t think price is an worry for professional model horse painters, especially since this is this artists’ first foray into Windstone, so it’s all-new subject matter…a far better sculpture in quality than say, Breyer Horse toys, and it’s got scales and a golden horn. For most people, the ki-rin is a whole new animal they have never seen before and is unique.
January 2, 2007 at 1:35 pm #522361Bummer! The artist airbrushed over the little snaggle teeth and didn’t mask them off while painting. I rather like that little addition to the sculpt.

Me, too! I have not managed to leave them white, yet, but I love it when you guys do!
January 2, 2007 at 1:49 pm #522363See, it’s little things like that that make it difficult to airbrush..gotta catch every little thing or you just wipe it out. Oh well, maybe the artist didn’t like the teeth and wanted to hide them.
January 2, 2007 at 2:47 pm #522364I don’t really like this one at all. The brown eyes don’t go very well with the color scheme and the scales are too white. Price is def too high.
January 2, 2007 at 4:09 pm #522365I’ve got to go with starbreeze. I much prefer frozen’s and drag0n’s work. “Professional” is arbitrary.
January 2, 2007 at 4:10 pm #522366I like the one that Drag0n did better. The pinkish one with stripes on the butt, but I like this one, too.
January 2, 2007 at 4:16 pm #522367You’re right. I think the piece was for dark_zorse. It was much more eye-catching than that E-Bay one, and much more worth $200, in my opinion. 🙂
