😯 😯 Not a cat owner myself (I’ve always been partial to dogs), but thanks for the info! It’s so scary what is allowed to ship because so many agencies have become lax over the years. I hope your cat is okay, drag0n. I hate to see four-legged loved ones suffer.

I don’t know if this is direct cause-effect or not, but we used Hartz shampoo on my previous dog, and she had seizures her entire life…

I hope that shampoo didn’t cause her to have seizures. She didn’t seem to mind them and had a great, long life, but if that choice of shampoo led to all the vet visits and medication bills…. 👿

But, it could have just as easily been weak genetics I suppose, since she was a golden retriever bought at a pet store.

Still. Thank you for the information!

Thank you everyone. I just am so furious with myself for not knowing all these horror stories about Hartz beforehand of else I NEVER would have used their product! I usually always use Frontline, but in a pinch I had run out and used the Hartz on her and also my dog which I have been keeping a good watch on, but he seems to be doing just fine right now. It’s possible that being he’s a dog he is stronger to the effects, but I still just shake my head in disgust and shame with myself for using the product and also with the fact that horrible corperation hasn’t been blasted with more nagative media coverage on their dangerous products! How their products are even on the shelves astound me!

As far as a kitty update she seems to be doing better, but is still acting a little like she’s drunk… he shaking has almost stopped completely and she’s been sleeping for the most part. She did manage to come and visit me in my bed int he middle of the night for a few minutes and purred in my ear so I think it was he was of telling me shes forgiven me. I pet her for a few minutes and she scurried back to her hiding place after about 10 minutes of attention… 😥 It was so sweet it made me cry.

OMG! Good to know! We don’t use any flea control on our dogs (it’s just never been a problem). I know there are some ‘herbal’ remedies on the market that, while they may work, are extremely toxic to cats. I also have a friend who thought he was being good by putting a flea collar on his kitten that he had bought at Walmart, advertised for kittens – the kitten had to be put to sleep. The chemicals were too harsh.

Hopefully your little one gets back to normal soon!

EDIT: So, we need to wash the dogs this weekend and I just found out my mom bought a bottle of Hartz Groomers Best 3 in 1 Conditioning Shampoo? Any idea if this would be ok, since it isn’t flea oriented, will that be ok or is something better recommended? We normally get them groomed and not wash them ourselves, but this is a needed exception. Ideas ❓

I’ve used Hartz shampoos before without any trouble, but I stay away from any flea control that isn’t sold at a Vet’s office, for that very reason. The type of shampoo I would recommend is an oatmeal shampoo preferably a biodegradable one. The oatmeal shampoos tend be the easiest ones for their coats.

I’m sorry your kitty is having such a hard time of it Drag0n. I hope she gets better soon.

we have to use oatmeal or aloe shampoo on our dog… she’s allergic to a lot of stuff and had dry skin…

course the water here is horrible.. so the kind of soap you use doesn’t matter much..

*goes off to check whether the shampoo for her cat is Hartz or not*

It is, should I buy a different one, I mean, it’s not the flea stuff or anything, she gets Frontline from the vet? *thinks she will anyway, just in case*

I usually wash her to cool her down a bit in the summer, since we can’t afford air conditioning (we have 2-3 fans running 24/7 though). She seems to like sitting near the fan when her fur is just slightly damp (we do towel her off WELL). But we don’t do it really often.

Well, since my mom just got the bottle of it and has used it before (dog we owned years ago… non-flea control of course – I don’t think we ever have used flea stuff on any of our pets since I was knee high and before), I think she’ll probably insist on using that if it isn’t going to cause a problem. Soot is almost recovered from surgery (toe amputation), but really needs a bath at this point. Lucky will have to be bathed by us from now on I think. He seizured the last time at the groomers. He gets freaked out by the blow dryer sound and we think he just got scared enough to freak himself out to the point of seizure. I know I did that once with my first IV needle ever years ago! I hate needles 👿

Just wanted to check before they get dunked this weekend. Thanks setsuna and frozen! I’ll definitely look into the oatmeal shampoo stuff though 🙂

I have a cat who had seizures when she got stressed out. It’s called stress induced epilepsy. As long as you don’t stress the dog out you should be fine. But I would agree about no more trips to the groomers. Be careful if you have a recovering surgery animal. You should wait at least 10 days after surgery. If there are still stitches don’t bathe them.

Nope, Lucky will go to the groomers for clipping, but not for the washing part. He’s fine with the groomer clipping, just not her blow dryer.

Soot had his surgery over a month ago… he just kept popping stitches, then popped them with nothing to stitch back (we’ve used a post-operative collagen on the open area… he was getting granulation as well). He went to the vet for a check on Monday and he’ll be taking the stitches out early next week. The vet said as long as we wrap his foot, he’ll be ok to clean him up, just so it doesn’t get soaked. At least he is free of the donut around his neck (looked like an inflatable floaty).

I’ve used Hartz shampoo lots of times in the past and never had a problem. Only for dogs though. I NEVER WILL AGAIN just because, but I think you’ll be safe siberkh.

                      I also posted a story on http://www.HartzVictims.org

In the past, the majority of problems with Hartz seems to be amongst animals with less mass. Smaller animals such as cats, small toy dogs, birds, etc. The less body there is, the stronger a chemical will effect said body. Nearly all the problems I’ve seen have risen from their cat specific flea control.

It’s obviously best not to use chemical flea controls at all, but that is often totally unrealisitc for many owners- so if you do use one, always try and get the vet-recommended brands (Advantage, Frontline, Advantix, etc) and triple check that you have the proper one for the actual weight of your pet, and the proper species. Most of the time people that encounter problems are not following the directions. >_>

Okay, now I have a new problem! My cat went into seizures this morning. Thinking it was after effects of the Terminex poison I checked all the other animals and they seemed fine. I brought her the the vet and I actually don’t think it was the Terminex, but the Hartz flea control stuff I used on her while we were out of the house. I made an emergency vet appointment, but I had to wait 3 hours. The product is similar to Frontline… THEN after I tried contacting the number on the box, in the meantime, called HartzMountain it was CLOSED even though it was over an hour into their regular business hours…frustrated I tried to call the ASPCA poison control center and they wouldn’t even talk to me unless I gave them a credit card number over the phone because there was a $60 dollar consultation fee to “open a case”! WTH! It seriously said “If you have an animal POISON EMERGENCY press 1” *press 1 BEEP!* “Please have your credit card ready for there is a $60 service charge for each consultation, please be aware, additional charges may apply” WHAT?!? A Poison control emergency and it was the ASPCA! Are you kidding me!?!

Thank God I think she’s going to be okay. After I took her to the emergency vet they gave her muscle relaxers to stop her tremors, but I started reading up on Hartz flea control and found SO MANY internet HORROR stories that they kill more pets the pests! NEVER EVER BUY HARTZ!!! I couldn’t believe how awful the people there were! I FINALLY got a hold of someone to tear them up about their product and they tried to SELL ME MORE STUFF and didn’t even care my cat almost DIED from their product! The person said to consider myself lucky because some animals have their livers liquefied by the active ingredient and need to be put to sleep. This is supposed to make me want to buy their product?! He was asking me if she had bleeding of the eyes because it was a common reaction!!! BLEEDING OF THE EYES! A common reaction!?! What the hell is wrong with thee people!?! ..and he asked it just as if he was casually asking about the weather!

Sorry to go off on a tanget, but what the hell!? I don’t even care about my tighty whities! I feel so awful I even applied this crap on my animal in the first place and put her through this… I’m just so furious with myself I didn’t research it better…and just upset and worried. Anyway…..

I’m sorry. Just I wanted to take this opportunity to PLEASE never use Hartz, or at least look it up on the net and see EXACTLY what it is that is in the chemicals you put on your pet. There is a WEBSITE I even found called…

                          http://www.hartzvictims.org/

With 1,724 victims stories, (SOON TO BE 1,725!) many similar reaction stories to the flea medicine I used, but with much worse outcomes, AND 38 active lawsuits!

Only use Frontline or Advantage on your pets! Everything else is poisonous…especially the over the counter “like Frontline” crap.

Watch out for wormers too, there is only one you can get at a pet store that is safe and is the same as what you get from the vet. I’ll get the name for you later.
