I guess I think too much like my father. Always the business-minded one. I’ve been burned enough times now to not start a commission without a non-refundable 50% deposit (which I usually don’t take until I’m ready to put pencil to paper, but I digress).
I remember quite clearly him pointing a finger at my nose after some people we raced minisprints with backing out on a commission without telling me first. Good thing I called them before I started painting!
So, yes, lesson learned, and my businessman father would give me a lecture for allowing something like this. 😉
January 16, 2007 at 5:03 pm #528472It’s not the best situation. I’ll see what I can do…I just hate situations like this…don’t want anybody’s feelings hurt.
January 16, 2007 at 5:06 pm #528473If you want a mean PR rep, I can get crabby. 😉
I wish you the best of luck, though, but in my humble opinion, asking her to take them down completely, since she’s apparently unable to make it clear that they are your PYOs and that you are not affiliated with her in any way, shape or form, is the best option for you especially.
Sometimes I do wonder if I’m just too mean for my own good sometimes, but especially if you’re running a business of your own, you do need to protect yourself.
Good luck!
January 16, 2007 at 5:17 pm #528474No, you’re absolutely right about this, and I admit I’m not happy about this, but I am a bit more…I don’t know…I always do try to support other artists when I can and this was all a big misunderstanding since the photo I told her she could use was the PYO lineup photo of unpainted sculptures and she could see samples of my paint jobs on DA, and she just thought I meant all of my colored ones she could use I guess. I have written her mails to that end so we’ll see what happens when she gets to them. I think she’s good intentioned and really only wants to have a reason to paint her Windstone PYOs but just wants to do it under commission first. I think in the end she’ll do the right thing. I’d hate to have people think less of her for this. It’s all just a mistake.
January 16, 2007 at 5:24 pm #528475Eh, I don’t really think any less of her, to be honest, I just feel that if you’re doing her a favor, she should at least give credit properly, and if she can’t do that, she needs to find her own photos.
Not to mention that it *is* misleading, however unintentional it is, to have finished paintjobs posted that are not her own. it’s not something I would ever dream of doing, because, as a general rule, the human population is incapable of reading comprehension, and they need to be babysat. They might bid, thinking they’re after an paint job just like your style, and get something completely different. She could end up with some major negative feedback for that.
So, in a way, by using the right images (the unpainted ones) she’ll be protecting herself too.
January 16, 2007 at 5:51 pm #528476As the owner of one of those commissioned wolves, I felt that I had to contact her via eBay. I wasn’t nasty, but I made it clear that I didn’t think what she was doing was fair to Water. She should take down the pictures or put it in bold, right up front, that the PYOs are Watergazerwolf’s. If it hurts her auction, too bad. All sellers get a free relist if their item doesn’t sell the first time around.
January 16, 2007 at 5:55 pm #528477Im glad you did, because I have been holding back. I feel its absolutely none of my buisness, but I really wanted to say something. DDVM is bidding… does she know the deal?
January 16, 2007 at 6:13 pm #528478Truthfully, I am very non confrontational, but some things get me riled up enough to say something. 😯
January 16, 2007 at 6:26 pm #528479Okay, I just popped on the forum to tell Water about this myself. I see everyone is on top of it =) That’s very nice of you two to let her use your photos. I guess it’s flattering, but hopefully she delivers what she promises. I would hate to see someone connect your work with something bad that could come of this. She could have asked permission first at the very least. Especially after saying how much she doesn’t care about the price they go for, she just wants paint samples. I was thinking of bidding on one, just to see how they come out.
Hmmmm…secretly though, I was somewhat wondering if she used one of mine for something. I guess she doesn’t like them =P

Did you also give her permission to post your pics on her website???
http://www.thecopperdragon.com/thedragonhatchery.htm
She gives you credit – sort of, but it never says that those paint jobs are not hers. Why not just link to the Windstone site (using a link – no copyright permission needed for that!) for pics of the unpainted PYOs?!
I don’t think this is very good. It’s just not professional. Sorry, but I have to agree with the other members, that this looks mis-leading.
January 16, 2007 at 7:16 pm #528481I just think that it’s not quite right to be selling something when you’ve never made one before! We all know that painting Windstones isn’t quite like painting anything else. Why can’t she at least paint one first?
January 16, 2007 at 7:16 pm #528482Plus the fact that on her website, it looks like she is offering to duplicate your paint schemes. And no mention of your name, just your initials. Her outfit is fast losing credibility in my eyes….
January 16, 2007 at 7:20 pm #528483Another thing to consider – if a person wanted to find out who WGW was, they would have a hard time. You can Google Watergazerwolf and it comes right up.
January 16, 2007 at 7:29 pm #528484I wasn’t aware of that Nessie…I will look into that. I haven’t heard back yet but email stuff can be really slow. May not know anything until tonight.
January 16, 2007 at 8:01 pm #528485Ski told me about this because i came across her auction and saw the pics and I knew I recognized them. I had to go back to the listing 3 times before I saw the astrix with “Please note: I’ve listed a link to the PYO gallery only to inspire some ideas for those who may be interested. All photos on the link are copyrighted to their owners. Blue Dragon photo copyright to WGW, used with permission. I WILL NOT COPY ANOTHER PERSON’S PAINTING, so please don’t ask. If you need any ideas, please feel free to ask, we have plenty! We’d also love to be given free rein to surprise you with a unique piece!”
But this is the griffin auction no the dragon auctions, and I had no clue who WGW was and I know you, I find the whole thing very missleading.
