Ok, so I have been working very diligently today on a PYO Pheonix. I was experimenting kind of. He was done very carefully, fully-hand detailed in archival calligraphy ink with minor detail in gold acylic, which turned out absolutely beautiful!
And then I pulled out my acrylic varnish, to clear coat it, forgeting that the ink was water based, so the pigment was only stained to the surface. I discoverd that my brush on varnish pulls the pigment out of the stone, majorly paling/bleaching it.. So I am assuming i have to use some type of spray on, and am requesting to know what brands seem to work well as well as glassy vs. matte etc. Thanks!
The best comparision i have would be Catcher, the keeper dragon done with India ink. thats similar to the full color ink i used.

With their finishes if it doesn’t say satin, matte, etc it’s gloss finish. It should work but just in case you might want to test a small patch on the back side. I don’t know what it will do as I’ve always used acrylics and haven’t even heard of anything that bleeds on windstones. Most stuff if it’s not acrylic it soaks into the stone staining it. Hope this helps.
March 24, 2013 at 3:55 am #895081I believe KaytanaPhoenix made Catcher (if I’m not mistaken). You could ask her.
March 24, 2013 at 4:50 am #895083Yup it was Kaytana who did catcher. I use Krylon Acrylic Crystal clear. I get it in matte, satin and gloss and dependent on what I want it to look like in the end tells me what I am going to use for a finish. I use rustoleum acrylic for my primer base color if I want a solid starting base on a piece.

The india ink I used is waterproof, not sure if that made a difference? I only had one place that it tried to pull the india ink off the sculpt, ‘n that’s because I had to paint a lil thicker to get the color on the dragon cause the gypsum wasn’t absorbing it (I’ve had this same issue of clearcoat lifting paint before with acrylic when the clearcoat got tacky before I could smooth it out, it kind of gets sticky and then lifts the paint right up). The way I worked around that was to just make sure that I ran the brush over the spot only once or twice per layer, ‘n applied several coats, after the first layer of clearcoat I didn’t have any issue with it… It’s probably overall better to use a spray on clearcoat, but I had iffy luck last time I tried a spray on, I don’t know why, but the brand I had wouldn’t dry completely… (It was Krylons artist grade stuff, archival, greenish colored cans.. it’s the only Krylon I’ve known of an issue with, but 3 cans of it in different finishes didn’t work, so I recommend staying away from that)
