If only basing it on how much dragon action you get to see I give a thumbs up to Dragon Wars. I’m sure I should give Reign of Fire another chance but after such a promising movie poster and then the first shot of the dragon I was like ALRIGHT it’s dragon(s) destroying London time baby!! Then like, them *writing* about what happened instead of showing any CGI and then skipping to people I felt so ripped off I was really too pissed to give the rest of the movie a chance. The short dragon scenes they DID have were awesome, but I still felt that they didn’t make up for the lack of an earlier destruction scene.
And yes, while I fully agree that Dragon Wars plays out like an episode of Power Rangers (my husband said the same thing! XD) It does have plenty of dragon mayhem scenes with a variety of dragon types.
You got the:
Evil wurm (most often seen)
Western Dragons (vs helicopters <3)
Good wurm
Celestial dragon (worth the wait)Then two dinosaur types, a big lumbering one with rocket launchers <3 (did anyone else love Dino-riders as a kid??) and a raptor type with rider.
But yes, unless you want to submit yourself to a b-movie I suggest you rent it and just fast foward to the awesome parts XD
I’m guess I’m just odd that I prefer a “bad” movie with dragons to a “good” one with less dragon scenes. But when something’s advertised as a dragon movie, honestly the only thing I care about are the dragons. The rest is just filler, lol. My husband said he would have walked out had I not been with him, but I was as happy as a silly little clam the whole movie XD
September 24, 2007 at 2:12 pm #619492Oh my word. Dino-riders. Lord it’s been forever and a day since I’ve seen that!
September 24, 2007 at 7:38 pm #619493I loved dinosaurs as a little kid (I was a total tomboy, yes). And what could possibly be cooler than dinosaurs?
Dinosaurs with FRICKIN LASER BEAMS ATTACHED TO THEIR HEADS! <3
September 24, 2007 at 8:19 pm #619494π I like dinosaurs too. I just hate it when people don’t know the difference when they’re making a movie.

Oh, they didn’t try to pass those off as dragons. The dinosaurs were part of the wurm’s army.
September 24, 2007 at 11:42 pm #619496DINO RIDERS. I still have some old vhs of that!
September 25, 2007 at 4:36 am #619497Those puny little things fighting with helicopters hardly qualify as dragons. I think dragons need to have dignity…those dinosaurs didn’t do it for me… π
September 25, 2007 at 4:41 am #619498Kinda funna how that 200 feet long snake thing was sneaking around everywhere without anyone seeing it for the longest time… π
September 25, 2007 at 5:00 am #619499It’s not a movie, however, if you’re into Dragon action there is a PS3 (yeah, sorry, I know) game that is called “Lair“. My good friend was on the production team and I got a copy asap. It’s wicked awesome and you get to “be” the dragon. The bluetooth wireless capabilities in the controller allow you to wing the dragon around. Pretty awesome. It was probably the CGI basis of the Dragon Wars movie because I notice a lot of similar moves and one dragon types looks the same.

September 25, 2007 at 3:04 pm #619500I was really stoked about Lair, but then heard that it was a disappointment when it came out. What do you think of it? I can’t get it for a long time- not until PS3s get old enough that they get inexpensive to buy.
I’ll stick with playing Horizons for now if I want to be a dragon! π

My art: featherdust.comSeptember 25, 2007 at 10:28 pm #619501Ick. Not to go against Safyre… but I’d say don’t waste your money on the game Lair. I’d pay $15 dollars for it at most. So here’s my experience with this game. It’s not meant to offend or anything, I’m just being true to how I felt.
I am NOT the gamer who gets angry or wants to throw the controller. I’ve never been that gamer. I am a very patient gamer, and I LOVE games. But this game… that’s ALL I wanted to do while playing it! I’ve never had a game that pissed me off so badly! I just wanted to chuck the controller and have it break along with the TV. While playing I would get a killer headache, not just due to the problems of the game itself, but also due to the “grab and jerk” thing they make you do all the time.
My friend Jon was watched me play the whole game and after I beat it, all he said was “…wow. I would get three missions into and say ‘screw it’ and never touch it again. This is terrible.”The controls with the dragon NEVER work how you want them to. You tell the dragon to dash forward and what does he do? He does a 180. Try to do a 180 and you’ll find yourself turning in every direction, running into a mountain and after countless times of thrusting the controller “up” to do the 180, you’ll just end up dashing forward.
I also didn’t like how you controlled the dragon on the ground via the joystick but in the air you used the tilt sensors. I’d go and take off from the ground and try and fly with the joystick and end up just rotating the camera. Many agree they should have let you change the controls if you wanted to move while flying with the joystick.
The dragon would also, at random and mostly important times, just do whatever the hell he wanted. He’d fly in a circle or keep flying forward no matter what you told him to do. On the ground he’d go stomping off in the opposite direction I’d tell him or if I was just standing around he’d lurch forward without command.I also hated the cut scenes. You’ll be doing something UBER important -over here- but then a cut scene will come in. After watching it, you’ll be MAGICALLY transported over the where you were in the cut scene. WHY. No! Then you’d have to fly all the way back to wherever you were before to finish what you doing in the first place.
The game was also terrible in that it didn’t tell you ANYTHING. It told you nothing on what to do. It would sometimes tell you that you should go do -this- but then you’ll end up failing the mission if you do what it tells you to do. “Hey, go destroy these ships! Oh, you failed doing what we told you to do? OH J/K LOL! You actually have to go protect these people over here, not destroy the ships we told you to!”
In fact, in one mission it tells you to keep the enemy army at bay, destroy all ships bombing you, kill the war beasts, give air support and kill the human-mounted rhinos. It tells you THIS is what you have to do to complete the level. NO. ALL you have to do is protect the people that are just standing around. THAT’S IT. Not destroy the ships or kill the war beasts or anything like that. Just land your dragon and breathe some fire or eat someone every now-and-then.
The game didn’t say anything to you like “hey, come save this manta or you’ll fail!” no, it just let you think you’re doing what you need to be doing and then the failed screen comes up. Even after failing, it wouldn’t tell you want you needed to be doing. It would just tell you what you already knew.Don’t waste your money. The game is only a 6 hour game (or at least that’s how long it took me to beat it) and you know… I heard that the own developers of the game say the controls of the game are bad. It’s worth a rental… or in my case, a free rental. It IS fairly fun when you’re just doing nothing. Just pick a level and just fly around and not do anything special. Then it’s fun… but only for 5 minutes.
And we all wanted so badly for it to be a good game X( I really really did! I was so excited… Most ratings for the game were 4/10 or 5/10. Slashdot said “1/5 – This game is unfinished/unplayable. It is not worth the trouble of purchasing, or renting.”
I am waiting for a wonderful dragon game. Lair looked so good but failed… So far, only Drag-on Dragoon [1/2] are good dragon games… but even then, it’s not dragon-centered and you can’t land the dragon and it’s more of a on-foot game (in both games, you’re a guy with a sword/axe/hammer trying to stop a war).
Wow long post.
EDIT. Lol I got the game for… $15! XD I didn’t pay any more for it. Since my hollywood video is going out of biz, I bought some extremely discounted dvds (old skool Transformers!) and PS3/Wii games. I got Lair for under $15. Lulz. Brand new… I know I, and Ameer were the only ones to actually rent and play the thing. I won’t be playing it for a long while though, if at all. Not worth it. But a brand new PS3 game for $15? That was worth it even if the game itself wasn’t lol. Yay for employee discounts and first pickings.

If you are into MMOs, try Horizons. You are the dragon and it’s great fun. π

You are too cute. π

Personally, I am biased because I have a friend who put many years, countless hours and his own self into it. Playing the game was very interesting, though the plot itself was kinda.. eh. I think they should’ve kept with the original plan of dragons going after goats and humans like natural beasts, as opposed to being controlled by stupid hu-mans. I enjoyed the graphics and the idea. It kept my husband hooked until he beat it, so it must’ve been alright.

Trust me when I say this was the first thing I noticed and the first reason I gave it up. It was virtually impossible for me-someone who never plays with the controller anyhow, to get anywhere or accomplish anything. However, they did come up with an update for the bluetooth that made it a much smoother command. So that will definitely help… Well, on second thought, maybe it’s just the fact that they were dragons… and dragon’s wouldn’t listen to some jerk hitting them with a club anyhow. π

Yeah, I saw that on your LJ. I commented about how I didn’t want to pay $5 away from WoW (the reason I don’t play WoW. $15 a month is terrible). I also didn’t like how you HAD to enter your credit card information just to get a sample account. If it’s a “free trial” account it should be… i’unno… free? I was really interested in it too. I wanted to see how you could customize the dragon and everything. It really looks fun… just not the price for a college kid with soon-to-be single job that pays less than $7 an hour π

No problem! I totally understand. They don’t take your credit card info anymore- it’s all paypal run. I figure that the $10/month is really no more than I’d pay to see a movie each month. That’s what… 2 hours of entertainment? With this at least I can play whenever I want and it helps me relax in the evening when I have time to play. π I understand though, I used to survive and support someone else on my own making $6/hr.
