Hi Melody,
Hope youre having a nice weekend.. Busy, busy, Im sure! If not, good on ya!Ive tried to do a search for this, but more often than not, it brings up user nyms (my own included!), rather than the subject matter for which Im searching.
Has anyone ever asked you, or have you ever considered creating a Phoenix as a Windstone piece? Im just envisioning some really cool (or hot as the case would be) oranges, reds and yellows that could be burned in there for the plumage. Expression in the eyes could go either way- if it’s sitting with wings just barely spread (or held in), I can see a gentle face, but if in full flight or a dive but still with full wing span, I can see more intense (though not mean- I dont see them as wicked birds; strong, protective and will fight to the death if need be but not agro for no reason) emotion coming from the eyes. Then some great talons in different positons (feet) and even perched on large partial high branches maybe- I dont know.
Just spitballing. Ever thought of anything like that? If others have already come to you with this request or idea here, sorry for the redundancy. I was unable to recover it with the search function. Have a nice day and rest of the weekend!

June 16, 2007 at 6:20 pm #589762She mentioned that feathers are a pain in the bum! 😆 You can use the search option and search for Phoenix in the Ask Melody thread and you will find some discussion on it from the past. 🙂
June 17, 2007 at 5:12 am #589763I’ll have to look for that too. A Windstone phoenix . . . that could be spectacular. And it could be tremendous fun as a PYO: I can think of some color schemes I’d love to try. But either way, what a great idea! 😀
June 17, 2007 at 5:45 am #589764Last I heard, there was a Phoenix PYO in the works.

Have a nice day and rest of the weekend!I am fooling around with a phoenix pyo design, (which means I have several going at once.. this is what I do when I am undecided about the design) The latest one is sitting on a rock, with the wings partially spread. The tail still bugs me though, I just don’t like the long floppy feathers in the tail..Do phoenixes always have to have tails like that? I was might give this one a tail like an archyopterix. What do you think, is the long ribbon-like tail very important to the “phoenix” image?
June 19, 2007 at 10:22 pm #589767I did a quick Google image search and you see all sorts of tails; the long trailing one, an almost peacock-looking one, and even short and falcon-like.
Personally, I don’t mind either way.
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

http://www.sarahjestin.com/feedbacklists.htmJune 19, 2007 at 11:15 pm #589768Yes, I think a archyopterix tail or long bird of prey tail would be good. I always think of the phoenix as a swan-like or peacock type of bird. But knowning how you need to sculpt due to the properties of the gypsum, I would think the stiffer, but flowing tail design would be fine.
June 19, 2007 at 11:32 pm #589769I need a pic of the dino tail….I can’t remember the tail specifically. I think the tail would work short or long if it fit with the overall piece. Is the face more of a broad or narrow bird face? Ok, I’m visual and just dying for pics… 😀
June 20, 2007 at 1:10 am #589770Every phoenix I’ve seen always have the be long tail feathers. I think they look good with them personally. Don’t know if I could see one without them.
June 20, 2007 at 3:10 am #589771I’ll be honest. I don’t care WHAT sort of tail you give it. The phoenix is the patron creature of my studio.
To say I’d have one. Or several. Or a whole flock. Would be underestimating…

As far as i know it depends on the type pheonix that you are trying to portray: only the one in the oriental version of the phoenix is the tail important. They are the ones with the long feathers.
Every other country has had different descriptions ranging from a Stork to a giant eagle.
I’d like to think that the phoenix is one of those fun creatures left up to the artist as far as design, since there is no one clear image of what it “looks” like.
I do know that as far as the oriental, the long tail feathers are shown to elegently curl and wave.
(I think an all knew tail design would be much more amazing since every one and there mother has a phoenix with the “long” tail feathers.)June 20, 2007 at 5:42 am #589773purplecat wrote:I need a pic of the dino tail….I can’t remember the tail specifically. kinda a cross between a griffin-like face and a peacock’s. Medium width. Eagle-like eyes, long neck. I am making this bird up as I go.
