This year I planted a small ornamental tree named”Fringe” and 2 Blueberry bushes.
Has anyone else planted a tree or something green? It is a warm Spring day here and perfect for planting new life. 🙂

Every act matters. No matter how small💞

Cute name Bodine! And the blueberry bushes will be so nice!!!
Unfortunately the ground stays frozen well into April here, so my planting will have to wait. I’m going to live vicariously through you though, sounds wonderful! 😀

Good for you! Fringe trees are very nice. 🙂

I had not realized that Arbor Day is different dates in different states. However, it makes sense that you are planting early in the South. Arbor Day here (Maryland) is in April.

Right now we’re in faux spring. It isn’t really spring it just seems like it. Next week it could be -20C. Last week we had 2 days with wind chill of -30C to -45C. Just before and just after the temperature was hovering around the freezing mark. Usually we don’t plant till May even if there’s no snow on the ground cause we have a tendency to get random snowfalls and roller coaster weather dipping below freezing till about mid May. Our average seasons are as follows: 6 months winter(mid Oct – mid Apr), 2 months spring(mid Apr – mid Jun), 2 months Summer(mid Jun – mid Aug), and 2 months fall (mid Aug – mid Oct). Welcome to Edmonton, Alberta!

I hear ya! I am only a few hours from you in Peace River and we get a fairly short but stunningly beautiful spring/summer. I couldn’t plant anything till almost June last summer so I am hoping we actually get an early spring this year. Judging by the 2 1/2 feet of snow on the ground it is not gonna happen though! I will keep my fingers crossed and spend my time trying to figure out how to use the Miracle Grow…..I TOTALLY burnt my morning glories to death last year :jawdrop: Apparently my green thumb only extends so far

I feel for you guys. How in the world do y’all keep them alive? My plants are a hobby with good results because of the long growing season. It takes a lot of time to grow things. How do you do it?I can’t seem to raise them indoors down here.Outside I can grow a twig but inside they start struggling and I have to set them out, bring them in,set them out.Our Winters are like y’all’s Spring/Summer.It comes and goes so fast you hardly have time to notice.I am NOT complaining, all the cold would probably make my wither up and freeze but I would love to give it a shot and get the opportunity to experience a true white Christmas at least once in my life

You just have to get plants suitable for a 3-4 month growing season and can handle the occasional chilly day. Many of our flowers and other plants that need a little longer growing season are bought from green houses so they are mature for mid summer. Since we have to start over each spring(except perennials that come back on their own) plants tend not reach some of the sprawling sizes that they can in the lands of eternal Spring/Summer.

Waiting for Arbor Day with you, Etruscan! I rent and haven’t broached to my landlord whether he’ll let me plant in the ground (yet!), but for now I have a bunch of plants bundled in pots outside that I’m hoping have weathered the winter.

A habit I’ve never been able to break is picking up seeds when I travel. I’ll eat a weird fruit or see an unusual tree, and a seed becomes a perfect souvenier! I’ve been lucky to sprout many of those seeds, and they turn into great living reminders of the memories of the trip. When my guy and I are able to settle into a home and call it quits to renting, I’ll have a small forest ready to come out of their pots and literally put roots down 🙂

Forever seeking: Blackwatch the raffle Old Warrior, Jennifer Miller's pieces, and GB Baby unis!

I’m pretty forgetful, so plants don’t last long with me 🙁 I’m always envious of other people’s beautiful indoor flowers and ferns and all.

I have a couple of plants from other places by taking a small cutting. The seeds are an excellent idea.

I will send some bulbs to you if you want some, lmk. They grow fast and if they don’t freeze, they will come back and with babies. You can grow them indoors/patio type with a lot of sunlight in a big pot.I have some pink Lilly if you want a few.
My new plants have taken their transplant well and I notice a couple of tiny new leaves waking up.

You are so kind! I already have quite a few iris, I’ve never enjoyed lily very much. I don’t have any sort of indoor patio or anything like that.. I don’t even have a porch, sadly!

Is it sad that I never understood what Arbor Day was before this thread?! I’m hoping to plant some stargazers and maybe some nice day lilies this spring, the lilies I had all sort of died while I was away at university. (Noes! D:) We have some pretty white ones so I want some nice deep red ones to contrast – Canadian Flag flower patch haha. (lol not, I just like red.) My parents grow trees for reforestation projects for a living, so I have the tree thing covered. 😀 I’m also intending to plant a few English Daisies because I planted one last summer and it needs some friends. (My mom thinks my flower planting obsession is insane but I can’t resist it – I have some black pansies that I adore that are the pride of my collection.) I might also have to replace a rose, the one we tried to transplant from my grandparents’ house in Alberta may have died. (Probably didn’t like the trip. 🙁 )

Check out my finished artwork at http://falcolf.deviantart.com/ and my sketch/studio blog at http://rosannapbrost.tumblr.com/

                          Excellent!
