Ok so my boyfriend bought me the cutest little teddy bear hampster for my birthday. He then had this brilliant thought; where do hampsters come from? 😯 I don’t know, I mean I’ve never heard of them running wild anywhere. So does anyone happen to know where they originated?

Hamster species originate in central Europe all the way through the Asian continent to China and down to India. Some range in specific areas (e.g. Russian Dwarf Hamsters or Siberian Hamsters).

Most of the bigger fluffy hamsters originate in Syria. This includes any of the ‘bear’ hamsters you see (teddy bear, panda bear, black bear, etc… whatever silly name the pet store gives them) which are named after their particular color mutation, which are bred out by humans.
