It’s awful that your acocunt was hacked, Rusti. I’m glad it didn’t hurt you financially, though.
Kujacker, I like your idea of constantly removing and re-adding the credit card. That’s good security.

I am sorry to hear about that it’s scary. I am sure you have already done this but as a reminder you should notify all three credit bureaus and ask for a Fraud Alert to be placed on your record. /FYI/ Equifax is 866-640-2273, Trans Union is 800-680-7289 and Experian 888-397-3472. But they all have websites where you can notify them.

I’d imagine that’s probably something anyone would want on their report anyway, just as a safety measure.

I’m headed down to the police station tomorrow, since Mr. Pleaseman said I ought to go down and report it, and to bring my paperwork with me.

      Life gets interesting, don’t it?

I’ve considered creating a second checking account and only keeping minimal funds in it; using it for Paypal and other similar websites that store bank account info. Transfering money into it only when I need to make online payments. That way, if I am hacked and they got a hold of my second bank account info, the impact of a wipe would be minimal. But I haven’t decided yet if that is what I should do.

That’s exactly what I’ve done, mainly so that I can easily transfer money from Paypal to my regular bank account if needed, since I almost always pay via credit card. The bank account that’s linked to Paypal always has just $1 in it.

I’ll probably open a second checking account then. Seems like a good idea; I’ve just been hesitant because I dislike having to many things open in my name.

…and all my info was changed so I no longer received credit card statements, phone calls, or emails. That’s a whole other mess because they obtained my social security number and I might have to start the Identity Theft process 🙁

I’m really sorry to hear that. That’s a big hassle and I hope you’re able to get the situation resolved successfully. Do you have any idea how they managed to get your information in the first place?

No, I’m not really sure. That was my semi-“emergency” credit card so I hadn’t made a purchase with it at a physical store location in years. However, I had used it a few times with my new Paypal account to make a few Windstone purchases (just to give the card activity) and used it once or twice at an online website (but never stored the number on any websites except for once or twice on Paypal when I accidentally forgot to delete it after making a purchase). But, as far as I know, my new Paypal account is secure, so I don’t know if that forgetfulness contributed to the credit card being compromised. 😕 Hmm… I think I might also had it linked to my Ebay account for a period of time. Ebay has never alerted me to any possible breach to my account but maybe I should consider that possibility as well.

Because I usually didn’t carry a balance on the card, I knew I didn’t have a payment due and didn’t even realize right away that I stopped receiving credit card statements or that unauthorized purchases were made 😳 I won’t make that mistake again and now check weekly to make sure there are no unauthorized charges on my other cards.

I wonder if it’s going around, then. I found the ebay account used to purchase all that World of Warcraft stuff (the butthead leaves bad feedback for everyone), I have an IP address now too, and a telephone number.

I’m calling the state police here shortly.

My mom got her eBay account hijacked this weekend. They changed her password, changed her location to somewhere in Great Britain, and started a bunch of scam auctions before eBay caught it. Seems to be something going around. 👿

Yeah, make sure you log in to ebay.com (not through the email) and check your ‘my ebay’ where it usually gives you your messages. There should be a message there about your ebay password if there is actually a problem. If not, you probably got a scam email of someone trying to get your password. Don’t fall for it! 🙂

I get those sort of emails all the time. I know they are fake because the address they send them to does no business/shopping on ebay or anywhere else. I just send them to spoof at ebay/paypal dot com.

Not exactly what happened to you, but similar.

My boyfriend got pulled into a phishing e-mail scam with PayPal and he unknowingly gave them all his log-in info. (It said PayPal was going to disable his account.) I only wish he had asked me before he did it. Oh well. He had to file a police report, etc.

On a separate occasion I unknowingly downloaded a trojan virus that rerouted my Explorer browser to fishing sites. The tech guy who helped clear it off said that is was set up to reroute to the phishing sites when you wanted to go to any financial site (i.e. PayPal, Banks, Credit Unions, etc.) My broswer’s URL screen showed the correct site (so I didn’t immediately know I was on a phisher site). I called up PayPal and they said that most scammers will change your e-mail and password so you never get an e-mail. After entering my password and e-mail several times and then finally getting routed to what knew to be a phisher page for Paypal (they wanted even my PIN numbers) I immediately called Paypal to lock-down the account.

I was curious, how did you find out that some hacked your account if they already changed everything?

They didn’t change my passwords or anything, they just toggled the filters in my email address so I didn’t receive emails from ebay or paypal.

They slipped up when they went to a site called ‘gold4power.com’ and that site sent me an email confirming an order.

I got really suspicious and checked my credit card online first, saw a balance well over my limit and a bunch of paypal charges I hadn’t made, so I went to Paypal and all the activity was staring me in the face.

Needless to say, I slammed the door pretty quickly then.

I was spooked and upset at first, but now I’m just really pissed.

All the info I have on this is now with the State Police.

Whew, I am sorry it has happened to you. I wouldn’t want to go thru that.
