Just a commission I finished up with tonight…the golden eagle/african lion combo.

January 16, 2007 at 6:32 am #528515I bought a cheapie airbrush before the car accident and plan to learn how to use it on a non-Windstone, then try doing bases on these PYOs before detailing and see how that works…but I do enjoy painting by hand because it does give you a lot of control…but if you can’t keep all of your paint wet you run into problems blending, so the airbrush idea might not work out. I was too chicken to try it on this PYO, being a commission.
January 16, 2007 at 6:37 am #528516I keep watching what people say about airbrushes, but I’m with you – you don’t have half the control as painting with a hand-held brush. Besides, I think that if you can see some brush strokes up close it adds a lot of character to the piece and tells that somebody actually sat and hand-painted it. Airbrush is smooth and pretty but it doesn’t have unique little quirks to it like a brush.
January 16, 2007 at 6:49 am #528517True, you almost can’t avoid brushstokes in hand-done work. Sometimes that’s good, and othertime annoying, lol. But I’ll give both a try. At any rate I can use the airbrush for my car painting, which is the true reason for my geting the airbrush really.
BTW, I wanted to mention that these photos show the griffin a little purpleish but I think it’s too redundant for me to keep saying my camera sucks and can’t capture the reality of what my paint jobs look like. I really need to invest in a high quality camera, it’s just that I have bigger bills to pay.

January 16, 2007 at 9:49 am #528519This is BEAUTIFUL, Water!! I wanted to do this color combo, too…I don’t think mine will turn out near as good! The matt finish looks really nice on this guy, too…
I think I’m wish Ski – this is my favorite griffin you’ve done so far!"He that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom."

January 16, 2007 at 5:19 pm #528521Really, your favorite? I guess it’s true then that simple is sometimes better. This is probably the only griffin I was able to spend less than 20 hours on! And that’s really because the color scheme was just more simple and less demanding. I’d love to see you do one like this Arlla. It’s really kinda a stereotypical look for a griffin besides the bald eagle version so no worries on taking anyones design idea.
