    Hi everyone,
Please forgive me if I have placed this in the wrong section. I could not find info on this particular piece under the information provided with the FAQ.

Basically, I have a bad habit of exploring thiftstores and coming home with things that are ‘junk’ to normal people but ‘delightful’ to me.
As the title says, I found a Windstone Flap Cat which I dubbed with the name “Huey” at an Arc thriftstore just on the outskirts of Denver about a year ago. I’m a stereo typical fat girl and just LOVE all things involving cats, and this was just about the coolest thing I have seen in a thriftstore. I had no problem laying down the whopping 3$ to buy it.

Today I was searching my room for things I could pawn on eBay to help me cover my tuition for this semester. Huey again caught my eye and after a quick search on the information on his bum, I was lead here. I probably will not be selling him now after reading about a striking similarities between Miss Pena and I. I realize this was probably not specifically her work though, but I would still like to learn a little more about him. Here’s a picture, sorry for the low phone quality. Also a picture of his bum, reading “Flap Cats Windstone Editions N Hollywood, CA”.

Anything you experienced collectors may know about this particular cat would be appeciated, thank you.

I do not recall the name Huey, but flap cats are a Windstone item and there are all types, big and small, and all colors. So could you post a photo or give a detailed description of size, what he looks like(bat wings or bird wings? Long hair, or short hair? and what colors he is? That will help us a lot for giving you the extra info about him. 🙂

Oh wow! photos before I posted my question! He is definately the smaller flapper, called the bat wing flap cat…and I think that color is discontinued. I know others on here can give more info on that.

But the fact that he has a name written on there is really interesting! I can’t see to well on the photo, but does it look like there is a signature on the felt pad too?

I updated with links to the pictures I have of him. Huey is just what I nicknamed it, it’s nothing to do with the Flap Cat itself. As for size, I don’t have a ruler on hand but it looks to be 2.5 inches from wing to chest and about 3 inches from bum to head.

I’d say this is the right section for it. This is the small bat winged flap cat in black, it was retired in 2001 (see Astral Castle link).

Despite being retired, it doesn’t usually fetch very high prices on resale (although there have been surprises) probably because it was available for such a long time and isn’t really hard to find. However at $3.00 it was an amazing deal! Congratulations.

If you look under Shop in the Windstone Store, Flap Cats section, you’ll see some of its more recent siblings: http://windstoneeditions.com/catalog/flap-cats

          Thanks for the info!
No, it doesn’t look like there’s a signature. The writing on the pad is all pretty intact besides “CATS” which is faded a little.

Edit: That is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks so much littleironhorse. I had trouble navigating though that database webpage because I can be quite the blithering idiot. If he does not fetch much, it’s a good excuse for me to hang onto him. Perhaps he will be among the few posessions I bring if I achieve my dream of studying art in Japan. His issue year is also my birth year ^^ Strange to think he could be my age!

Welcome! What you have there is a Bat Winged Flap Cat (Black). It is indeed Melody’s work. It was a production piece that could have been painted by anyone who did painting at the factory, but the sculpt is indeed one of hers. The castles were produced and sold through Windstone Editions, but are the work of Gary Kinsella and the Forms of the Feminine Spirit are Maya Hill’s work. Actual Windstone’s are all Melody though. 🙂

Taken from Astral Castle’s Windstone Encyclopedia (http://www.astralcastle.com/windstone/wsframe.htm)
            No.: 702-K
            Issue Price: $20.00
            Issue Year: 1989
            Retired: November 2001

The photos aren’t the clearest, so I can’t see if there are chips or anything, but if not, Huey looks to be in pretty good shape. They do show up fairly often on Ebay, but they’re still nice. You definitely got a great deal at $3, and he has a new home. Congrats!

EDIT: Guess others beat me to posting! *lol*

Unfortunately he had five very small chips on him when I purchased him. I don’t mind more excuses to keep him. I can see myself easily becoming a Windstone collector someday when I have the spare $.

Even with the little chips he could fetch around $35 bucks easy I bet.

Yeah little Flap cats are more expensive now . So even chipped he’s a deal . There are people who will repair him for you . And check out Flea Market here . You never know what you might find .

Bat Winged cats are called Bad Cats by Melody . The Bird Winged are Good Cats .

Here are some prices that your flap cat has gone for, on eBay, in years past. Notice that Windstones, like all collectibles, can go through ‘trends’ and the market really varies, so this is not a hard fast set list for value… it’s only there to help you get an idea of what they have sold for in the past!

                    http://ravnheart.com/windstone/index.php?act=details&id=265

Note: That list is for NON mint black bat-winged flap cats only. Since ‘non mint’ can mean anything from a few tiny chips all the way to ears/wings being broken off, you have to account for a lot of variation in the condition of the piece, hence different values. 🙂

                    Good luck!

The extra marking on the bottom says “Flap Cat™”
Such a deal! You need to keep him. I said so.

Very well, very well. He has a permanant home.
I only wonder who saw fit to chuck him into a thrift store. I guess only Huey knows.
I am curious to how he ended up in Colorado in the first place. Did Windstone supply any tourist stores in Colorado in the duration which this piece was produced? Specifically this sort of sculpture reminds me of ones I have seen in a little fantasy shop named “The Crystal Wizard” located at the base of Pikes Peak in the tourist town of Manitou Springs, though not quite the same detail and style of painting. Is it possible to know such information?
I guess it’s quite possible that someone purchased this from elsewhere and moved here.

Anyways, thanks to everyone for the information they have given me. If the summer job I have lined up does not fall through, I will likely be purchasing more.
Look for stuff to pawn to get money for art school, but find a new love and a new way to spend more money instead ._. Story of my life!
