Please help out animals in need. This is absolutely free. All you have to do is go to the link:
The sponsors on the site pay for all the food and care. I hate to think of animals that are neglected or starved. And there is some wonderful stuff in the stores…not to mention cheap flat rate shipping.
And while you’re there, please check out the other tabs at the top. The breast cancer free mammograms link is really important too. Actually, I think they’re all important. And only takes a minute of your time.
Thanks
September 19, 2007 at 5:22 am #618286That’s a neat idea. 😀
September 19, 2007 at 6:19 am #618287Thanks, I’ve been looking at all the stuff for sale. Needless to say, looks like I’ll be doing most of my Christmas shopping there… 🙂
September 19, 2007 at 6:19 am #618288I click on all of those sites every day! I came across it with the literacy one. That’s one of those things that just gets to me (kids & the crappy literacy rate in this country… I blame both the parents and the school systems… GRR).
September 19, 2007 at 10:12 am #618289Seeing as I was reading before I went to school, I blame parents more than the schools. But, I also would blame the education system.
September 19, 2007 at 2:23 pm #618290Oh neat! 😀

I do agree parents need to take the first step and get kids into reading earlier, as mine did. I only wish my hubby’s parents would’ve. He doesn’t read more than a magazine (& an occasional “muscle” book, which is basically just a longer magazine).
But I think the school systems are primarily at fault for the lack of requirements. Kids keep progressing in school whether they can read at an acceptable level or not. What ever happened to the fundamental 3 R’s? Many people Read like English isn’t their 1st language, their wRiting is atrocious (grammar, sentence structure, and penmanship… and not just online, where I often don’t bother to make it right either), and aRithmetic is a joke. I know too many high school graduates that can’t do simple math (+/- even) without a calculator. (it wasn’t even a requirement to take it all 4 years at my HS, which, to me, is unforgivable)Sorry to get off the “pet lover” dealie, though it’s related since the Literacy Site’s connected to it.:)
September 19, 2007 at 6:34 pm #618292I go to those links too! 2 secs to click and be done, daily. Even if it involved more, for a worthy cause I do anything. Good thread JAS!
September 19, 2007 at 7:24 pm #618293I have clicked on the animal and breast cancer, etc websites every day for years.
A lot of the problems with the public school system in Florida was caused by the former governer. The FCAT test is so screwed up that that is all the teachers prepare the kids for today. Unless the kids can pass this one set of tests they can’t graduate no matter how well they have done on everything thru out their school years. But it is beginning to look like the current governor is going to try to fix some of that. Florida also has a problem with english not even being learned as a second language by a great many of the students.
September 19, 2007 at 7:37 pm #618294I have clicked on the site twice now, and it won’t load 🙁 I’ll keep trying though.
School problems extend far beyond Florida. Just recently we had a commissioner force a school to let a kid, who had completely failed, graduate. The parents had gotten calls throughout the year telling them their son was failing, and then at the end of the year the mom bullies the system (outside the system, actually) to get her kid through with a totally undeserved degree. There is pressure at the university to pass students so that the school has a higher graduation rate. (If you’ve got a failing student you’ve got to have good documentation, or the school will support the student.) A friend was bullied into passing a graduating college senior who had failed his final paper and the student’s comment about his paper was, “I’m going to teach biology. I’ll never have to write a paper again, so it doesn’t matter.” 😯 😡
And don’t get me started on “No Child Left Behind” 👿September 19, 2007 at 9:17 pm #618295I have actually clicked on those sites a couple of times. I always seem to loose them after a while tho.
September 20, 2007 at 7:05 pm #618296That’s what bookmarks are for. I’d never be able to find anything without my bookmarks. I am so utterly forgetful most of the time.
